OK, so I'm getting ready to take the plunge and root/flash my 3VO. I've been trying to do my research (Thnx Jerofld), and once I think I got it, I read another thread that confuses me (OK, so it it's not hard to do :o, but...) Anyway, the way I've read it, downgrading HBOOT to 1.4 used to be the way to go (I'm 1.5) to get S-OFF, but now there appears to be more than one method to get S-OFF without downgrading HBOOT. I'm also seeing on some threads that having S-ON doesn't necessarily mean there are the limitations there once was...

So, considering my 3VO is no longer under warranty (I got it first day :D), should I downgrade HBOOT to 1.4 to get S-OFF, leave it as HBOOT 1.5, or is S-OFF not that big a deal anymore? Am I reading right that S-OFF is required for ICS ROMs?

I don't have as much time as I'd like to spend on it, but I don't mind doing whatever to get the best results (not worried about OC'ing, just better batt & features, smooth operation and, of course, ICS :D). I just don't want to wind up permanently bricking it and having to go back using my Pre!!!

Thanks to all you folks for helping n00bs like me with rooting...

Actually s-off isn't required for an ics Rom im running 1.5 s-on with mean Rom ics

Cool... I see folks talking about having S-OFF and how much better it is, but with what seems to be more recent developments, it doesn't seem to be as big a deal as once was thought. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the advantages.

That's what I'm thinking today, but once I read something else tomorrow... Hence my confusion. Thanks again, DS95!:)

I'm 1.5 s-on also and I've installed a lot of roms (testing which one I like most) and I've had no problems at all. Sense 4, ics, etc. all works.

I really don't see the big deal of it I believe I once read you can flash without pc if your either s off or on 1.4 but that's where 4ext comes in for 1.5 s on

Roger that, Dragon and Hockey. Seems y'all are quite successful staying S-ON (using 4-EXT) with 1.5. So with that and Jerofld's excellent guide, I don't see any real advantages of going S-OFF right now. Is there any rebuttal??;)... Thx!

I actually didn't have any success rooting with his guide, I had to resort to rooting with a guide from YouTube lol

i am 1.5 with S-on also.. running mean 2.4 rom. i have run some others iwth no problems also.

i used the guide on here.. with no issues.

Jerofld's guide works perfectly, and yes I have tried zr3d and it works. (Be careful, there is 1 for froyo and 1 for ICS, idk which one you want, but I accidentally downloaded the froyo one and had to redo it for the ICS lol)

Downloaded the zr3d gt 4.2 I believe its called will find out in a sec when I flash it which one it is lol though I've heard high praise about it

I say root with HBoot 1.5 S-ON the HTC Dev way and if you have issues with Roms then you could always downgrade later on, the Juniper way is easy. Now once you do root and you are still on HBoot 1.5 S-ON, then I would recommend you use 4EXT Recovery, it will make you life much easier for flashing and it also has Smart Flash for HBoot 1.5 S-ON, make sure you enable it on install.

Take his advice 4ext does make like easier for flashing if your s on that's only way I got up enough courage to start flashing, just flashed the zr3d and in love with it lol
Although I hate its not ics lighting quick and much better compared to mean ics and even seems my data is quicker with it

Perfect! Now I'm not so conf00sed anymore! Thanks y'all! It will probably be next weekend before I can take the time (again, I want to take my time so I don't perma-brick my phone and have to go back to my *gulp* Pre :D)

Yeah like when I was running mean gb and mean ics (latest versions of both) there was always that lag and delay. Also as far as data speeds go, on both roms I was pushing down speeds of like 0.4 mb/s which I was use to as that's how horrible the speeds was since I've been with sprint since I believe march.

On the other hand zr3d gt 4.3 there is no lag what so ever between opening apps switching etc etc so its obviously faster, and another nice part since flashing this Rom my data speeds have increased to an average of 0.9 mb/s with a peak of 1.5 mb/s normally late in the day into early night.

I'm also convinced some how for an odd reason its the Rom that's increased my data speeds as I ran the speedtest.net app on my girl friends evo 4g unrooted and recieved the same horrible results I was once getting on stock Rom and mean roms.

In other words in my opinion, zr3d def blows mean roms out of the water, oh and you've got leedroid tweaks with zr3d which is a nice touch

im gonna go look for some screenies for the rom. i am liking ICS pretty good.. but i have noticed that my data is alot works with Mean. i used to be able to stream music at my desk, now i cant.

I liked ics pretty good but I'm over it now since I never messed with it before lol

Flashed ics version of zr3d tonight its cool but much slower data speeds than on gb zr3d which is a deal breaker for me
