Root [CDMA] Help with a boot loop?

dvdmon

Lurker
So, a couple months ago I found some instructions about rooting my HTC Evo 3D (Sprint) and went through the process, then installed a verison of CleanROM ICS - RC2. Everything worked fine except I couldn't get tethering working and I didn't seem to have much in the way of roaming options (I wanted to be able to force roaming if that's even possible).

Anyway, I put off doing anything for a while, then my laptop hardrive died and I lost whatever files I had downloaded for the rooting that was on my PC. So I finally decided to try out this morning redoing it. I went through the newbie guide and found I had already put those files on my phone. I grabbed the ROM that was linked in the post, and through it in my ROMS directory on my phone, then tried flashing to it. Got a boot loop. I then tried 3 or 4 others including a newer version of CleanRom, and then finally the version of CleanROM that I had installed previously. All produce the same thing. I start seeing the boot animation, it freezes, then it reboots. I even tried doing a Nandroid restore of data, system, wifi, and boot after flashing the old CleanROM and still nothing. By the way, before each flash attempt I am doing a complete wipe.

I've seen mention of RUU, and I suppose that might have to be my next step?

But I wanted to at least get someone's opinion on what's going on and also understand a little better (myself) what I'm dealing with. When I boot into the bootloader, I get the following at the top:

*** UNLOCKED ***
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.50.0000
eMMC-boot
Aug 7 2011, 20:21:40

I know that S-OFF is supposed to be better, but that it's either impossible or very difficult to get it onto the Evo 3D after it was updated to a certain firmware.

At this point I'm just needing my phone back. I'll deal with trying to improve it later but I don't even have a phone that people can reach me on, and that is not good! If anyone can provide any help, I'd be grateful! Thanks!

hey dvdmon(any relation to Earlymon ) have you tried flashing a stock ROM or even clearing data/factory reset? those may help
try booting into recovery-if you have that your golden :)
go to wipe data/factory reset
yes
go to advanced/wipe dalvik cache
yes
reboot and see if it fixes if not
download Stock ROM
flash through CWM
install zip from SD/STOCK/YES
hope this helps let me know if it works :)

Thanks, StarScream. Yes, I have recovery, and can go into it from bootloader. I tried wiping all/factory reset, then delvic cache, then restart, same freeze/reboot.

I'm downloading RUU_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2_Radio_1.09.00.0706__NV_NV_SPCS_1.43_release_271101_signed.exe now - figure that's what you mean by stock?

I'm not sure what you mean by flash through cwm - that's clockworkmod? Going to that site I only see a ROM Manager app linked via Google Play, but I assume I need a working Android phone to install that!

Anyway, sorry for the confusion, I'm pretty ignorant about the ins and outs of rooting and flashing. :(

I was able to download another one, which I thought was for the Sprint Evo 3D but after running it, it errored with an unknown error saying it wasn't the correct file. This was the file I tried: RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_1.13.651.7_Radio_0.97.10.0530_NV_NV_SPCS_1.16_release_198109_signed

I'm trying to download the other one but it apparently is going to take another 5 hours :(

Are few questions come to mind. What hboot does your phone have? What recovery are you using? But if your phone has the gingerbread base there can be problems flashing ics roms. Mostly bootlooping. Also if you download 4ext recovery from the play store and flash recovery through the app, 4ext fixes a lot of bootloop issues. Make sure you tell it that you are s-on when it asks.

The reason the ruu failed is because you have to relock your bootloader before running it. I would hold off on the ruu until trying 4ext recovery. That usually helps. The ruu will return you to stock and you will have to re root your phone. Use it as a last resort.

Thanks Brian, I did actually relock my bootloader (it now says *** Relocked *** ) at the top, so that wasn't it. Also, I mentioned in my first post, bootloader says I have 1.5. I did have the TWRP as my recovery but now it doesn't show up as an option in bootloader - is it still there? I suppose I could try issuing a command from my PC to book into it, but am going to try installing the 2.17 RUU which seems maybe to be the one that will have more luck. I was able to find it on a site that I can download much faster - probably will be done in just a few minutes. I'll update once I try this new one.

But I'm also wondering about this 4ext. If I can't get my phone to boot into anything, how would I run an Android app??

Oops I see you are hboot 1.5. This is most likely the problem. I am hboot 1.5 as well but I have to upgrade to the ics base before flashing most ics roms.... I would recommend going s- off though because you can't downgrade back to gb if you are s-on. Also that ruu you tried to run is an older version I think so it likely won't work because you are s- on. I don't think you will need an ruu though unless you want to run the ics one to update your phone to the ics base. Might be a good idea if you want to flash ics roms and also 4ext recovery is recommended.

I would highly recommend gaining s-off via the wire trick though. It is not too difficult and will save you a lot of trouble. Being s-on will make you have to do more work after running ruu's

Sorry forgot you can't boot up. My mistake. Here is a link to 4ext recovery on my drop box for you!

You will have to flash it with fastboot commands like you did twrp.

Ok, that second file did actually get me back to stock (Gingerbread). I am now doing the HTC updated to it's stock ICS 4.0.

Once I'm done with that, I guess I need to research how to re-root and hopefully this time get it to do S-OFF so that I can flash whatever ROMs I want. Once I reroot, would you recommend TWRP, 4EXT, or the recovery within CWM as my recovery app?

My other question is this - I made a backup of system, data, boot, and wimax via TWRP. This was when I was running the ICS CleanROM RC2. Can I restore that while running another ROM? Or is it useless unless it's running that same ROM? If the latter, I'm wondering if I should flash to that CleanROM RC2, restore to get my data back, then use a backup program like titanium backup to back up my apps (which I stupidly did not do earlier), and only then start trying out new ROMs? I guess I'm still unsure as to what I actually have backed up. Do Data/System/Boot/Wimax include all my apps and their settings or no?

You can restore your backup while running any rom. However if you are using a different recovery you won't be able to restore a backup from another recovery. For example if you start using 4ext recovery you won't be able to restore a twrp backup. You'd have to re flash twrp to restore that backup.

I would recommend 4ext recovery because it not only looks awesome, it is probably the best working recovery out there. You won't be disappointed. When you re root just use the recovery image from my last post. Rename it recovery.img and flash just like you did with twrp in the newbie's guide. I also recommend making a backup while you re root. Just follow the newbie's guide again and replace twrp with the one I provided. Also you can use the unlock code you already have if you still have it. So you just need to run the command with the unlock code file again to get unlocked.

Also just so you know for next time. You could have just ran the ics ruu to be stock ics rather than the gb ruu then updating. Could have saved a step there. And you generally don't want to take ota updates. I know it doesn't matter in this case because you are unrooting anyway but just fyi. In the future just flash things to keep root

4ext is the best, especially that you're s-on. With this recovery there is an option called SmartFlash that will allow you to flash ROMs on a phone with S-on. Great feature, but in the end go for s-off.

Yep its an awesome recovery. I used it before I was s-off and still use it because it's so good. I still would recommend s-off if you're going to do a lot to your phone but that's something you can decide when you get to that point. You will need s-off to go backward in software if that's something you ever want to do.

Well, after a lot more work, I finally restored my old data. I was a little surprised that it restored my ROM as well, but ok. Weird thing was that a few things here and there did not get restored, including a few apps, and a few settings, but most were restored fine.

I then found this guide to rooting again, but with S-OFF:

[Guide] Quick And Dirty Evo3D Root & S-OFF (Sprint Only) - xda-developers

After a few hours I finally got the S-OFF working, lol! That wire thing took forever!

That post suggested getting 4EXT Recovery Controller, but of course I can't do that because Google Play decided to stop letting me purchase things, wasn't that nice? Actually my only guess is that my credit card company probably is putting a halt on payments at least to Google play due to all of the $.25 purchases, even though really I haven't made THAT many.

Should I hold off on more until I can confirm that what I have is the latest? Does it really matter? DO you know if the one you put up on your dropbox is the latest?

I don't think the one on my drop box is the most brand new one but the newest one was just a minor bug fix. Basically it's exactly the same. Use the one on my drop box! 4ext is awesome. You won't regret it. And it's 10,000,000,000,000,000 times better than twrp 1.1. Then when play store let's you download again you can get the app and flash the newest recovery release.

But seriously the update didn't change anything. Just a fix for some obscure rare problem that I've never encountered.

Thanks again, Brian. I reflashed to your version and when my Google Play account works again, ugh, I'll download the control app. I'm in the process of installing my first custom ROM (well, other than my initial CleanROM), so we'll see if it works, and how well my Titanium backup worked from yesterday. :) I'm installing SOS M. It's going to be hard not to be tempted to install and try out a new ROM every few days, if this all works pretty smoothly! :) Mainly I'm hoping to get tethering working, but I'm sure there will be a ton of cool other stuff to play with. Just hope it means I'm not so distracted that I spend all my "free" time on this! :)

And you might just end up installing ROMs every few days. I go back and forth, trying out ones that are stable, and ones that are in the early development process. Of all the ROMs, my favorite is MeanROM next to SOS M.

As for tethering, there is a common fix that should get things going for you if you haven't already tried it. Try the following:
1. Open Wifi Tether app
2. Click Menu button on phone
3. Select Settings
4. Select Device-Profile
5. Select Generic ICS [may appear as Generic ICS/GB (wlan0)]
6. Scroll down to LAN section...check boxes for MSS clamping and Routing fix
7. Scroll to the bottom and select Battery Temperature...select corresponding one depending on location (this doesn't affect the tethering, but since you're in here you may as well make sure it's set correctly)

Optional
8. Enable WiFi-Encryption
9. Change Passphrase, if necessary
10. Enable Access Control (might want to do this for security purposes

Lastly, while you're still in the Settings menu, click the Menu icon on the phone and select (Re)-Install binaries/configs

Now, you should be able to go back and start tethering. Just remember, if you're phone is on wifi when you start tethering, it will switch to whatever data connection you're running behind wifi (i.e. 3G, 4G, etc.) Depending on the signal strength of this connection, whatever device you are tethering with will have a decent connection speed. Kind of obvious, but figured I'd put it out there. The great things is it's free!
