Root [CDMA] Help with Bootlooping pls

cchallon

Lurker
I'm sure this has been answered somewhere here before, but im at my wits end scouring the internet looking for an answer on how to fix this so if anyone can be so kind as to tell me how i can fix this, i would be eternally grateful.

Yesterday, i rooted my phone (is/was a GSM evo 3d with ICS).. i went thru the process of getting the s-off (thru recovery?) as well and everything was fine. I downloaded one of the roms from the xda site and once it was loaded, it told me to reboot before use and it obviously started bootlooping.

I did a bit of quick research and i tried partitioning it (which apparently only made it worse as now there is literally nothing left on the phone [or at least there is nothing in the F: folder that used to hold the phones contents]) At first my pc wouldnt recognize it but i managed to flash a kernel (?) and now i can access it from my pc again. I've sinced downloaded another rom.. installed it and the bootlooping hasnt stopped.

I've seen in quite a few places online say that installing 4Ext will solve the problem but the only places with tutorials on how to install them show it being done thru the app store as opposed to the command prompt (which is what i need since its bootlooping)

Anyways... I'm pretty sure that the phone isnt bricked but I have absolutely zero ideas in terms of how to get it back working again... any help is appreciated!

Hello. As the gsm version has many different carriers can you tell me your country and carrier? I think you should run an ruu to get your phone going again. I just need to know which one to link you to. This will fix anything that might be flashed incorrectly.

However it will format your phone and you will have to flash a recovery again and and then try a rom again. I don't have a link to a GSM version of 4ext recovery to flash. I will ask around while you are running the Ruu.

Here you go.
RUU_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_Rogers_WWE_3.28.631.1_Radio_11.77.3504.00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_262715_signed.exe - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com

Download that on your computer and follow the instructions provided in the Ruu. You will have to boot your phone into bootloader (volume down + power) then select fastboot with the volume keys to navigate and power button to select. Then connect to pc when prompted. It takes about 10 minutes then you should be able to boot up into stock ics.

After this we will work on recovery!

Thanks alot. Gonna see if i can find a different mirror. File Factory has the download throttled down to about 20 KB/s.

Lol yeah its a little slow but make sure you get the right one. Most importantly don't run a cdma one!

Here is the 4ext recovery link.
Note you won't use command prompt to flash.

Rename PG86IMG.zip put on sd card not in any folders. Boot into hboot (volume down + power). When it asks to update say yes with volume up. Wait til completely finished and it asks to reboot. Then when phone boots up delete PG86IMG file fromsd card or rename right away!

I found the same file name as yours.. speeds are a bit better, will only take an hour or two.

Thanks for finding me the 4ext link!

Will update when ive got this sorted..

ur a life saver!

No problem! Oh man that's a really slow download :( sorry to hear that.

Even on file factory it only took me about 10 minutes. Let me know if you hit any snags.

Also I've never partitioned my sd card but if you don't have a lot to lose you might want to format it too.... Dunno if it matters or not but since you're starting fresh and all....

So I'm not sure why, but it didnt work...

I followed the steps and at the beginning of updating the phone with the rom, it said that it needed to update from 3.28.631.1 to 3.28.631.1 (i dont know why)

it doesnt give you an option besides cancel or update, so i clicked update.

about 7ish minutes into the update, my phone screen has switched to black with the white "HTC" logo.

and then just after that it says
"ERROR [155]: UNKNOWN ERROR
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again"

It did a little troubleshoot and asked me to take the battery out. I did and it went straight back into bootlooping.

It just ran a second time, with the same results

I dont know why it wouldnt be the right ROM.. Rogers only uses GSM so it wouldnt be a CDMA ROM

Lastly, i tried loading the 4ext file... everything was fine until it said press volume up to reboot. I did that, but when the drive showed back up in my computer, when i clicked on it, it said "please insert disc".

For some reason, since i tried updating with the ruu, the only way i can access the drive is by going thru recovery and hitting "mount sd card" (obvs i cant do that when the phone is rebooting, so im unable to delete/change the zip file.

The phone ended up just sitting on a black screen and not booting back up.

I eventually pressed the power button and it went back into the boot looping, so im not sure if it worked or not.

stressful!

Are you for sure s-off. Go into bootloader and tell me what the first two lines say. The other reason I can think of is if the download got corrupted. Did the place you download it from provide an md5 checksum? (its a long string of numbers and letters)

Yes we are getting ahead flashing the recovery because the Ruu wasn't successful. Do you have an adapter for your sd card? You will have to remove that file from the computer with a card reader because the phone won't boot :/

looks like it was my mistake regariding the s being off...

I had completed all of the steps for it to be off, but the 2nd line says s-on rl, which i'd assume means its still on.

I dont have an adapter for the sd card either. what do i need to remove, the 4ext? I can get at it thru recovery (i think)

edit: nvm, i see what you mean now! lol ;\

If you have the PG86IMG file on your sd card it won't let you boot into recovery. Maybe I misunderstood and thought you put it on there?

Okay the reason it failed most likely is because if you are s-on you have to relock the bootloader before running the Ruu.

Also I'm sorry I was getting some info from another thread mixed up in this one. Did you make a nandroid backup when you rooted? Can you go into recovery and restore your backup assuming you made one?!

so the 4ext installation loaded and im in there now.. still having a problem mounting the sd card... not sure why.

and i dont have a backup unfortunately... the minor tweak i was doing seemed straight forward enough and i didnt figure (stupidly) that it'd do what it did.

to relock the bootloader its just "fastboot oem lock" correct?

Yes I believe that is the command. So get your phone into fastboot via the bootloader and lock your bootloader and try the ruu again!

And you should always have at least one working backup on hand before trying to flash anything! Especially with ics roms bootlooping is happening a lot!

I'll peak in for a little bit longer but I need to get to bed. I have an early morning ahead. Hopefully the ruu will at least get you up and running and we can work on some more tomorrow if you don't already have it all figured out by then. We definitely need to make you a backup after you are up and running.
