Root [CDMA] I'm considering not rooting...

Putty

Android Expert
Hear me out....My batt life so far is very nice. The phone is fast as hell. I am able to remove some Sprint bloat.
I am not seeing why I really need to root except for ti backup, mybackpro, etc. I rooted my 4G for speed, batt and no bloat.
Plus I like the Sense appeal right now. I like everything about the way out the box looks.

I never rooted my 4G, and I don't plan to root my 3D. I suspect I have the ability to do it. But most of the benefits are things that aren't urgent to me, and I have never felt any vital need to do it. I do try to maximize the benefits from my unrooted device. But I choose not to have to worry about things like not having the ability to use 4G or my camera, and I'm willing to give up the undeniable benefits of rooting to free up my time and energy for other purposes.

I respect those who root their phones because they feel the benefits are worth it to them. I'm absolutely NOT anti root.

Android is about freedom to make choices, and each of us should be able to make the choice of whether and when to customize our phone, including rooting. You have no need to apologize or make excuses.

Rooting actually has no effect on 4g or camera. That would be custom roms. Rooting simply gives you superuser permissions and the ability to remove bloat and use rooted apps and a few other small things.

To add custom ROMS and kernels you have to have root, but root isn't for everyone.

My mistake, you are right. I tend to blend the two in my mind, but they are different.

Honestly, I am tried of spiderman 3d and green hornet app booting up and running in the background.

If they are going to share information with 3rd parties as part of the permission, I would like to have the option to permanently disable them. As it currently stands, they will randomly boot up and run in the background. This provides an avenue for hacking and attacks, and also compromise data and privacy.

Until a root is found, us atk to stop the apps from running in the background. You will need to us atk even if you never clicked on the apps or used them in anyway.

I, for one, can not wait for the ability to root. I intend on deleting the bloatware, then backing everything up. After which, I may feel the need to try an overclock to 1.5GHz, just for the hell of it. I will make this phone my own. :D

Yea I'm gonna root but I'm not gonna install a custom rom. Coming from a Hero, if you didn't root & install a rom then the phone was basically unusable but this phone is almost perfect. The most I wanna do is delete some bloat with TB (especially since I paid for it) get back Pic Me, overclock, clean my cache, blah, blah blah

It is true that this phone is fast (it get laggy when you have certain live wallpapers installed, not a lot, but still...), you can remove some pre installed apps, install ROM's etc, etc, but the only reason why I want to root my phone is because I want to be able to tether! Specially now that I got 4G on my phone! :D

I want to remove the rest of the bloat, run ad blocker, tether and be able to customize things like the battery icon and the grid on the desktop... I'll root the first day it's available.

I rooted my 4G but unsure about doing it here. I am considering both options. What other reasons do you all have?
My main reasons to root 3D:

  • WiFi tether - especially for iPad
  • Ad block
  • TI backup
  • Remove all bloatware
My main reasons not to root:

  • Easy tether works fine for laptop
  • Most bloat removable
  • Ease of OTA updates vs, flashing to keep latest updates.
  • I do not custom ROM anyway

Coming from a rooted Evo 4G, here's a list of root abilities I sorely miss (wrapped in code tags to preserve indentions):

Code:
NANDroid backups
ability to backup/restore apps + data
battery life optimization abilities
  -custom kernel
  -setCPU
ability to manage phone wirelessly
-SSH to access terminal command line
    -bash shell + busybox
  -SCP to transfer files
retrieve MSL with ease
remove unused/unwanted system apps
-my bloatware list is still quite long despite 2 sprint apps being removable
wifi tether when in a pinch
hosts file access to block ads
Customizations
  -splash screen
  -boot animation
-ability to try out custom ROMs

Those are pretty my resons as well.

I already have two rooted phones so I can use the wi-fi tether feature whenever I need to, and EasyTether works great on the 3D if I do not have either of those other phones handy.

I enjoy the challenge and control of rooting, flashing, installing custom ROMs, boot animations, themes, etc., but at the same time I am so busy with work and remodeling my house right now that I just don't have the time to devote to it. While I may end up rooting the 3D, I'm not in a particularly big hurry. I do, however, like having the CHOICE to root or not, so hopefully htc will do as promised. I am overall extremely happy with their products (this 3D phone is simply fantastic as was the EVO 4G) and would hate to see them go back on their word.

What I know is I spent way too much time on XDA researching roms and kernels. Flashing rom after rom. I really don't want to have to go through all of that again. The 3D is great out of the box.

Besides all of the apps and perks that come along with root, I rather enjoy a good flashing. It is just something for me to tinker with and see how far I can take it wish I had more time to get more involved with developing sadly I already am working 55-60 hours a week.

So as root becomes available I will be rooting to see what all these Devs can cook up for us on this powerhouse.

New to this stuff... Rooting loses you OTA updating?

Here are 3 reasons for me to root.

Roam control so I can hop on Verizon towers.

Titanium Backup.

Root explorer.

Kind of, you can not take the ota update, but the ota update is always provided for rooted users a few days later. So you will get the update, but not the same day as the non rooted users.

But you wouldn't be able to update through HTC or Sprint correct? You'd have to manually do it in a sense?

Can can get the ota update from htc and or sprint, but it will break root.

Most of the time, it is just a few hours before the rooted rom is released for any ota update, but yes you do have to manually install it from sd card.

im still unsure if im going to root my 3D. Honestly not being able to root is isnt a problem for me i know it will come eventually so still keeping the phone cuz its just plain awesome! but i dont think ill change the rom stick with stock only thing id root for are the extra apps like back up and all and the wifi tether thats really it so still debating if those are good reason to even root it.

Wanted to second and third adblock and TI Backup. Will not get a 3d until root! That said I will prob not run a custom rom, well until:D I get bored with it.

My rooted/CM7 Hero's 3G speeds were way faster than my new 3D, and while I like the interface of the 3D, if a new ROM can fix some of the problems we are having and not introduce a bunch more, then I'll be flashing a new ROM asap.
