Root [CDMA] installing adb drivers

so what exactly is different with s off than s on? why am i only able to roll back with s off and not s on?

S-off means the phones securities are off. You have complete control to do whatever you'd like to do to the device itself.

Son means htcs restrictions are present and will prevent you from doing things to the device that they don't want you to do

Here is a pretty informative article

It explains pretty well without going over your head too much.

I do not know the answer or how to explain why you have to be s-off to downgrade... I think (but not sure just a guess) that its because the phone won't let you flash radios when s-on?

Ics and gb have different baseware. If you take the ota from Sprint or whoever they allow you to update the radios and kernels and all that because it's their update. If you are already ics you need different radios and kernel to run gb. Being s-on won't allow you to write them to your phone. The security prevents it.

Again that is my theory from what I've learned so far. I'm just a noob to rooting myself.

I tried flashing recovery twrp because I'm already familier with it. However I'm getting an error in my cmd that says failed(remote:not allowed) what does this mean?

Did you unlock your bootloader again? You are just supposed to flash it without the computer.... Following the directions I posted for 4EXT but use twrp if you want. I'll get a link for the zip version to flash. 4ext is nice because it's touch screen. You don't have to use the volume and power keys. Also they have an app to go with it.... Twrp also has a touch recovery available now too which I haven't tried as I'm happy with 4EXT.

Here is the twrp recovery

You can't flash the file you used in fastboot unless you unlock your bootloader again. Don't do that!

Download the zip version in the link and use the exact instructions as the 4EXT I posted.

Ok. So I downloaded the twrp file and put it on my SD card. Then I booted to hboot and nothing happened my phone didn't ask for updating or anything. Am I missing something? Also, u said there is an app for twrp now? I didn't see it on the market....

Not an app for twrp. An app for 4EXT. Twrp also has a touch recovery now. That just means booting into your recovery let's you use touch interface instead of hardware buttons. Honestly 4EXT looks amazing too. It's a beautiful recovery.

So nothing happened? Lol you know what? Do you already have twrp recovery? Boot into hboot and choose recovery and see what you have.

So I'm a little confused, u said since I'm s off then I'm not supposed to use my computer to flash the twrp, so how am I supposed to do it? Just put it on the sdcard and hope the hboot will recognize it? Also, can I use any fastboot commands anymore since my bootloader is locked?

You don't need fastboot commands since you are s - off. You flash the recovery by putting a recovery zip file on your sd card. But it has to be named exactly PG86IMG. When you boot into hboot it should find that file and ask if you want to update. Then you tell it yes. Volume up I believe. You don't need the computer or fastboot commands for this since you are s - off.... It should be easier.

Congratulations! Make sure you rename or delete the pg86img file though! But awesome! I'm glad you made it
