Root [CDMA] Legacy root posts from sticky prior to S-OFF

Ladies and gentlemen: I have a root prompt.

Given that they took the name of an old thread of mine for that forum (obviously a coincidence ;) :)) - there was no way I could resist.

Now to see what other trouble I can cause. :D

Edit 1 - /system is now mounted read-write

Edit 2 - I now have Titanium Backup and Adfree... and I've now lost Titanium Backup and Adfree! :D :D

Edit 3 - Third time's a charm. Have to fre3vo, mount /system rw, then run an su loop until each app sees su for this session. Not for non-devs, so I'm not going to give advice here, sorry - I can't take the responsibility now.

Pics or it didn't happen. ;)

Oh, crap - ShootMe is not ready - it's tearing all pictures. :( Broken in 2.3.3 on Evo 4G, too. OK, just a sec...

Edit 4 - Root access is precarious, but do-able. Pics:

First root! :) ;)

PS - XDA agrees with me - this is for DEVS right now.

[FAQ/Summary] HTC EVO 3D DEV FAQ's, Root Status, etc. [ROOT3D! Updated: 07.02.2011] - xda-developers (broken now)

Looks like they're going to change the link as they go. Ummm. OK.

Here's today's equivalent:

I'm not going to keep updating this post - if that one goes stale, here's the dev forum, follow your nose.

REMEMBER: This is a TEMP ROOT for developers to tinker
Oddly, some people are deciding that this is a good point to learn adb and to try to play dev, because, well, there's a Window's bat file there.

My opinion on this is clear:

-- because it's like playing

If you already DO know what you're doing, really, and what that batch file does EXACTLY (ahead of time, without reading comments) then, yes, you've stopped reading this far and are getting it working already. ;)

and, for all you nervous nellies with absolutely NO patience, remember, you should probably wait a few days AFTER root and S-off is achieved to let the "Early adopters" try it first, and see if they screw up their new phones...

you've got a new toy to play with, now, be an adult, and just wait the few more days until you can SAFELY and confidently root this thing..

See two posts above yours. I can get anything working. The pictures weren't convincing? :D

I've made a backup but haven't attempted a restore - I didn't expect that to work with temp root, honestly, because I backed up system data.

That'll be up to the kernel - remember, they broke that for the stock kernel for the Evo for a while.

Raises an interesting point - how's this kernel? :)

OK - stand by.

Edit -

OK, I got Wireless Tether (free, Market) recognized by root and semi-working (so if you want to call me a liar, I'm square with that). The tether would hold as long as su loop, then need an update, as shown in the pics. I suppose I could finagle that - but I don't see what that would prove.

Correct me if I was wrong, but I think you were asking if Wireless Tether could gain root, access 3G, and serve it to a local laptop. I was able to log on to the tether point, and get through a short transaction before being hoist by my own petard (literally, as wake69 pointed out that agrabren said - this is kinda an explosive charge there :D) and having to re-verify.

Pics don't lie.

wireless-tether-1.jpg choose-net.jpg

Yeah - I'm using a Mac for this, hence the odd window mgr in the 2nd pic if you're not familiar.

PS - Superuser Permissions has gone stable for me - today, I accessed Titanium Backup and Adfree without needing to re-verify anything - previous su rights were recognized and granted.

PPS - Boy howdy! Wireless Tether is one persnickety deal - it mostly (not always) isn't able to able to turn on wifi on phone (even when granted su rights). But sometimes - it does. Now _that_ is interesting...

Good question.

PPPS - Was just fixing broken XDA links in the forum main sticky and saw this:

[WIP][DEV]Hotspot unlock - xda-developers

Nope - hadn't seen that, probably won't care, will just use Wireless Tether when or if I ever really need it. Misunderstood your question. Oh well.

i got temp root to work, but su would not work, keeps saying needs update. also could not get tb to recognize su, any ideas? i followed directions in op

when i take pics with shoot me the pics are all out of whack, are there settings i need to change?

Giving me a complex about not reading my posts here... :p

Answer = double-click ddms in sdk/tools if you've set up everything correctly.

No - but you can do via adb (a bit painful compared to the likes of ShootMe - but quite doable).

I _know_ we have updated instructions for this on our forums - but google is not my friend today.

Meanwhile - see if this helps. If you already have adb, you're mostly there.

Sorry, it is sunday of a 3 day weekend, i am a few deep of my "payment" for installing a flat screen yesterday. i was not paying 100% attention. noted and fixed, but still not gonna take screen shots with adb until my head is um cleared

pics above should suffice until tomorrow :p

Awwww. No more MP3, huh? Pretty much have to agree with you there.

Once I actually get acclimated to rooting and feel comfortable enough, I plan on trimming the bloat as well.

I am not a noob but this process was not easy at first. But I am sure it will get easier

Yeah, it looks like something only those experienced with the various functions should try. Personally, I am waiting for one of two things: a full root by Devs/HTC or my vacation in mid-july.

I will have two weeks to practice techniques on my MyTouch 3G. Mainly, to get my feet wet with the terminology although I know the actual process may not be even close to anything on that particular phone.
