Root [CDMA] Looking for help on installing this because I am very new to rooting

The first Rom is based on stock with the latest base firmware, HBoot and radio and latest Sprint ICS release, as the other is ICS but based on the VM

We will get to the other one, I simply want to see if you can get this one to boot up first, my guess is because you are on GB and you cannot run the latest ICS release unless it is modified to to run on your current Base. I think that even though you are S-OFF now, I think the issue is that you would have to downgraded the HBoot to be able to flash, otherwise you will have to relock your Bootloader, then flash the current HBoot and base, then root again then you would be able to flash it, lets see what Scotty thinks

Ok. I need to download it. I will see if that one works. And even if it does work, it still bugs me to not know why this one won't work. I expected this to be easy haha. Then I couldn't even flash my first rom. What is the difference between this rom and your homebrew rom?

Ok that is the one I downloaded. It's finished now. I'll let you know how flashing goes. That sounds like a lot of work. Is it normally easier to flash roms? Is this just an ICS issue? Also if I put ICS on my phone and wanted to go back would I have to do the extra steps every time switching between the two?

Also, does the superwipe feature on 4ext wipe your SD as well? I can't find any good documentation that explains the different options in detail...

Yes it is easy, the issue is your on HBoot 1.5, that is the issue and some have no issues and some cannot flash ICS Roms, it is hit or miss.

I am stumped now, sounds like a recovery issue, I have to leave soon, lets try this later on tonight when I am at home and i will get Scotty here with us also, he is really good at this. HBoot 1.5 is not my specialty

Ok Don! I am not 100% sure I will be able to work on this tonight but I will try to get on here if I can. Don't wait for me or anything :P I'll just make a post if I'm on and wait around and see if anyone is out there!

I ca give you an ICS Rom that is base on 2.17 in the meantime, to see if it loads that one, If you can't load this one then there is a Recovery issue

Downloading now... I'll post whether or not it works. Thanks for your help! I'll talk to you later!

I think there may have been an issue with the homebrew download. It said it was 512 mb before downloading and on my computer and sd it is only 135 mb. Significantly smaller than all the other roms which are 450-500.

I'm downloading it again to see if it will work a second time. I will try to flash both of those and let you know if either one works.

sorry for the delay, ive been busy out in the garage, had to get my car fixed wo id be able to work tomorrow!

anyway, james it is my belief that you are not able to install ICS roms simply becasue you need to be on ICS firmware. i know for a fact that ICS has changed some important mount points, and therefore the roms must be modified to run on older firmware.

what we are going to do is run the RUU for the latest firmware. first and foremost, you have a sprint evo 3d correct? flashing the wrong RUU could be disaterous so we need to be sure of that. if you boot to your hboot screen, you can verify that at the top is "shooter" and not "shooter_u". if you have shooter, then download this:

Shipped ROMs

it is a .exe file that you will run on the PC,and plug the phone in when instructed. make sure your battery is charged to at least 40%(according to htc. i prefer to charge fully). the utility will run,and update your phone to the latest ICS firmware and software. after its finished reboot.

rest assured, that you will remain s-off,so therefore are not losing the ability to root.

after the utility finishes, and the phone reboots and is working,we will reinstall your prefered recovery, and then flash the superSU zip files to root the stock rom. you can run it for a few days, and then if you like, start flashing ICS roms. i am fairly certain they will flash, and not hang or bootloop once youre on the newest firmware.

superSU is from this thread: [22.08.2012] SuperSU v0.95 - xda-developers (down the from the link that says "CWM-SuperSU-v0.95.zip")

donb can help us re-setup your recovery, since hes a little more familiar with this device :)

I was able to successfully flash both of those roms Don. The homebrew seems a bit laggy compared to ZR3DX.

Scotty thank you for the reply! I have a few questions just for clarification. So the method you describe would allow me to install stock ICS? And then I would actually root that myself by installing SU? If that is the case I wouldn't really need to Flash another ICS rom as I was trying to use a stock ICS rom anyway.

Is your method the same as taking the OTA Update and then adding SU? Or am I misunderstanding something?

What if I don't like ICS or want to revert back to GB? Would I have to flash another RUU to get back? And if I ever decided to go back to ICS would I need to follow these steps again?

Scotty thank you for the reply! your welcome! I have a few questions just for clarification. So the method you describe would allow me to install stock ICS? yes. And then I would actually root that myself by installing SU? correct. you will just flash the superSU file in recovery. If that is the case I wouldn't really need to Flash another ICS rom as I was trying to use a stock ICS rom anyway.

Is your method the same as taking the OTA Update and then adding SU? Or am I misunderstanding something? its not really like taking the OTA. but it is installing all the same images and files that the OTA would install. so it is giving you the same end result. it will be every bit as good as taking the OTA on a stock phone.

What if I don't like ICS or want to revert back to GB? Would I have to flash another RUU to get back? correct. you are s-off,you can do anything you want to! if you want to go back to GB then you can just run a GB ruu. nd if I ever decided to go back to ICS would I need to follow these steps again? absolutely correct :)

hope that helps :)

That helps quite a bit. I appreciate the info since I am just learning and like to understand (at least somewhat) what I am actually doing. I know using 4ext does basically everything for you and you can flash with minimal knowledge but I like to know how things work.

The only question I still have from your answers is what is the difference between taking OTA and flashing the RUU? If the RUU I flash is completely stock without root permissions, then why can't I just take the OTA update to simplify things and add SU to that? I'm sure there is obviously a reason to flash the RUU, it just doesn't make sense to me why it matters how I get the stock ICS on my phone?

OK, perfect, as I suspected, the reason why the ICS Stock Rooted Rom would not flash is because you are on the old base, the newest one is base 2.89. with a different radio and different HBoot (1.58), so you can't flash a HBoot rom from 1.50 to 1.58, the HBoot needed to be updated.

Yes the Homebrew is much more laggy, because it is still based on VM but has the latest drivers and base, so there are still lag issues, mainly with the phone app and messaging, the Dev is working on resolving that.

The Zred Rom is a little older but also based on the VM base but has older drives so there is barely any lag. Zred is coming out with a new update soon, as the Dev has been MIA but is back in action now, so there will be a new release soon, but will be on the latest base, but will work without updating the HBoot or radio.

Hope this explains a little, I would run the Zred for a couple of days and se how you like ICS, and if you don't like it then you can flash Zred GT which is really nice and is GB base, and best of all, you have your Stock Nandroid, so you can go back to your stock GB anytime very simple.

Taking the OTA will lock your bootloader back and loose root

FWIW, I prefer 4EXT over TWRP, much more user friendly and much easier to use fir HBoot 1.5 and up

Yes taking the OTA would, the RUU that you would run has been modified with all the OTA stuff but items taken out that would cause you to loose root, hope that explains it for you. HTC don't make it easy, this is why when I got my 3VO, I never took any OTA's

This would also remove s-off?

I appreciate all the help and answers you guys. I have to get going for awhile. I am going to have a very busy weekend doing family things but I will try to find the time to to follow Scotty's instructions and post my results.

That answers my question. Thanks! I should have rooted a long time ago before it was so hard... I kept putting it off and excepting OTA's and when I was finally ready to do it, it was apparently not one of the easy ones. Any phone I get from here on out I will root asap.

And like I mentioned, stay with Zred 2.1 ICS for a few days and see how you like ICS, this will make it easier when you make your decision up, this way if you want to go back to GB, then it is easy and hardly any work, and you will not need to do what Scotty will have you do, that is only if you want ICS from Sprint.

if your phone were more stock,it wouldnt really mattery. in order for an OTA to happen several things must be correct:
-software build but be a release version, not a leak
-firmware also must be current release, not a leak
-updater scripts present
-certain files and apps present
-stock recovery

in otherwords, you really need to be on a pretty stock phone. if youve changed radios,or deleted bloatware with titanium, then the OTA will usually fial.

let me take a minute to wonder aloud why folks are so excited by the notion of an OTA update. i see them in all the various forums i frequent go to great lengths to be able to take an OTA. the software and firmware afterward are the same as running the RUU,theres nothing speical the OTA is doing. its just downloading patch files that a stock recovery installs. in my honest opinion there is alot more that can go wrong with the phone downloading large files, and then everything is patched together. the ruu is alot cleaner, and i feel, safer.

This would also remove s-off?

Yes taking the OTA would

actually,it would not. the OTA can be taken when unlocked, without affecting that, and s-off will remain afterward, since the evo3d has whats called "radio s-off". basically this means that a security flag that is independent of all other partitions is set so that it is off,and it remains that way, period. you will stay s-off until you purposely turn s-on,no matter what you do- run RUUs,flash hboots, take OTAs,etc. youll always be s-off.

while it is technically possible that an ota could turn the radio secure flag back to "on",that situation is extremely unlikle,as it would also do so to legitimate test phones

nonetheless,it is advisable,IMO to avoid OTAs when possible, especially if you are keeping a custom recovery on the phone. OTAs and custom recoveries are a huge no-no!

what you can do to make setting up ICS a lil easier,is to use titanium backup,or mybackup pro to back up your current user apps. the paid versions allow batch backup and restores, and are a must for changing roms :) well with their cost in the market.
