Root [CDMA] Mean ICS Rom = Reboot loop

Member
Hi All,

I have two problems, one of which I believe is a kernel problem but I'll ask anyways:

1. Rooted phone (finally...), went clean enough, installed Mean ICS ROM and it got into a reboot loop. I believe this is something to do with the kernel but I couldn't find really great instructions on how to fix it. I know there are two types of kernels, I suspect I have the wrong one installed but I'm not sure

a) how to know if that's for sure
b) how to know which one I installed and what one I need to install
c) how to install a new one (is it just downloading the zip and going through the flashboot install zip just like installing a rom?)
d) where to get the best kernel to go with mean ICS -- the kernel's seem to be much more spread out than ROMs and a lot of the sites seem complicated to actually track down the files

2. The first few times the install failed (resulting in reboot loop) I was able to easily do a restore from my backup. Now my restore is sticking at "Restoring Boot", everything before this goes smoothly but it just sticks at this point. I've done the clear cache and all of those options to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joel

Without going into too much detail here, I would read a few more post in this section, I will also assume you are on HBoot 1.5 and your are on the CDMA version Rom. With that being said, ICS Roms and HBoot 1.5 some have issues and some don't so you will need to do some ready, you have to flash the Roms differently on HBoot 1.5 especially if you are flashing Roms. There is a Sticky thread by Jerofld in the ATR section, that I would read up on first before going any further, 2nd, there is an app called Flashguide that will allow to flash Roms and Kernels easier, and 3rd, I would strongly recommend, if you plan on staying on HBoot 1.5 and not downgrade, I would use 4EXT recovery, which has SmartFlash ON for those on HBoot 1.5, much easier and use friendly.

Once you start getting involved with kernels you best know what you are doing, as the wrong Kernel can cause havoc and be a PITA to get your phone back, sometimes if you do not know what you are doing, or you do and go to fast then it makes our life much harder to help and guide members. Always remember the first rule of thought, NANDROID is your best friend, so before flashing anything, create a NANDROID and cover your butt. ;)

As mentioned there are many thread with members have the same issue on HBoot 1.5 with bootloops issues, and most of the devs have disclaimers in there threads on what to do before flashing the Rom if you are on HBoot 1.5

I run Linux so I think using Flashguide is out of the question. I'll take a look at his post and see what I learn but I could have sworn that the stickied post about rooting the Evo3d says it's meant for HBoot 1.5....

No it is for all HBoot's, but there are references for different HBoot's

Did you root your phone, or someone else did it for you, and what HBoot are you on ?? and what recovery are you running, I would say put as much info you can about your phone, what HBoot, how you or someone else rooted it, and what you did after that, then we might be able to see where your issue is, and you are on CDMA network with Sprint ?? And when you say you installed MeanRom ICS, you did install the one for the 3Vo, not the EVO LTE ?? have to ask to make sure as it has happened before.

My mistake I should have done that to begin with ;)

1. Yes I rooted the phone, did the whole HTCDev thing, I didn't think it was nearly as bad as it's been made out to be

2. HBoot 1.5 and his post says that it's assuming we're on that

3. Recovery I used the one suggested in that stickied note, TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) version 1.1.1

4. I rooted it myself using the stickied note that you referenced, everything went smooth as hell until I tried the ROM out. I'm still able to easily get into flashboot and I was successful in restoring my backup.

5. Sprint CDMA network is correct

So I believe it's rooted but I just tried installing Titanium Backup ROOT and it's telling me it's not. I think that this is just because I don't have a rooted ROM installed and not that the phone actually isn't rooted. Please correct if I'm wrong :)

Edit: I just successfully installed ZR3D so this is specific problem to Mean Rom

this is a simple fix if you have s-on ics will not work been there done all that some get lucky others don't. you need to do the wire trick get s-on to s-off and problem fix.

OK, since that post, there has been a better Recovery for HBoot 1.5, and that is 4EXT Recovery, it has Smart flash On for HBoot 1.5 which will make your life much easier, you can read up on that, and again, those that are on HBoot 1.5 some are able to flash ICS Roms with not issues and others keep getting the bootloops. I myself am on HBoot 1.4 so I don't really follow much on the HBoot 1.5 so I don't want to over step my boundaries here, but many on HBoot 1.5 sear by 4EXT. I also would stay away from flashing any kernel on the ICS as most do not work, and I believe there is only one kernel other then stock is running on the ICS and that is Chad's but a few things don't work on it, so it is a trade off, I would stay with stock kernel IMO. Hope this helps. I am sure others on HBoot 1.5 will chime in here to help you out. ;)

I would try Drops Roms, they seem to have a little issues with them, he has 2 good Roms, one is ICS and one not, I will post them here for you to try, remember NANDROID first.

I only see a paid version of 4ext, I don't want to pay for it until I know for sure it works. Was the free one removed from play store?

Reading elsewhere it looks like the solution to the reboot problem is installing the AnthraX-htcleak-rls1.zip. I'm a bit wear after your warnings about messing with the kernel but the whole point of rooting was to get a ICS mod installed

Did you make sure Smart Flash was on, and if it won't flash ICS, then you either will have to do the wire trick to downgrade your HBoot, or flash a non ICS Rom for now, until Sprint releases their version on ICS for the 3VO

Give the ICS Rom I posted from Drop and see if you get the same result.

No luck. Installed 4EXT and installed the ROM again, still getting into a reboot loop.

Yeah Smart Flash was on. Going to try the ROM you suggested and see how it goes. I'm not convinced Sprint will have ICS out in '12 and I'm canceling my plan in September anyways ;) Trying to turn this phone into a sick media remote, I'm almost there but wanted a few features that I couldn't get without rooting.

Not exactly sure why so many people are having problems flashing ics roms that are 1.5 s on using 4ext I've never had a problem and I'm on 1.5 with s on and even flashed 4 different ics without any problems, maybe I'm one of the lucky ones?

I ended up getting it by installing the antrax kernel, was pretty straight forward and now I'm running ZR3D ROM without a hitch, I may install the mean rom just because I've read a lot of good things about it.

As for why a lot aren't working, not sure but it's definitely the case that it's a routine problem as I found a ton of posts about it.

Lastly, for DonB, do you know if this ROM comes with the ability to make the camera the screen on button? My power button is acting up a bit and I'd prefer using the camera button as the on button, I know Mean Rom has the ability.

Appreciate all the help, glad I'm running ICS, seems to be running like a charm :)

Nope, not that I am aware of on this Rom, but you can use the app Shootme, that will do what you want

Looks like most of those apps are pulled from the Play store, here is one that might work for you, give it a shot, I am sure there are others out there, click HERE Or HERE

hopefully last question, I can't seem to connect (USB) to my computer (Windows or Linux). Is there some trick with this ROM? Thanks

Those two apps just look like they are for screenshots not for turning the phone on. Am I reading it wrong?

I was in the exact same boat as the OP. I did the s-off wire trick and the Mean ICS ROM works like a champ now.

The wire trick also turned out to be pretty easy. Thank you for all the help and guidance.

Nope my bad, misread, I thought you were looking for an app to take screen shots without using the Power button, sorry.
