Root [CDMA] Newb trying to S-off (research done)

ripbabey

Newbie
So i did all my research before attempting this wire trick. I Have unlocked it and flashed meanrom 2.6 rom with relative ease (thanks to some help on here with 4ext) Turns out all the research in the world cant always help lol. Heres the scoop:

Installed controlbear on my windows 7 laptop. Adb and fastboot both work so drivers are good. I got controlbear all the way to telling me to do the wire trick now. After several phone reboots i always failed. So i was scared out of my mind when i rebooted to to the juopunutbear screen or my hboot screen. However could not get into recovery mode nor boot my evo up. After some research and playing around i discovered a simple command controlbear.exe -f since i could still get into fastboot, viola! Phone was back up and running. However my 16g sd card comes up as blank, and wont format. whatever i have a 4g i can trash to lol.

After getting my phone back up and running, and realzing how simple it is to get back to my phone, i decided to try again.

Controlbear will now reboot my phone and go to the juopunutbear screen, than controlbear tells me it cant find my device, please install drivers.... Ummm... i was just doing this earlier controlbear lol.

Im running hboot 1.58 Unlocked S-on with meanrom 2.6

Also when in juopunutbear screen, through command prompt using fastboot i can get my phone to still reboot, which means adb has to still be working right?

Please HELP ME :-)

if the wire trick is failing, either youre not making good contacts or your timing is off. its possible you may need a different wire.

it may also help to restore a stock backup,or run an ruu and root that. jpbear recomends that you be on a stock rooted rom,and not a custom rom to use their tool.

on your driver issue, its possible for adb to be working, but not fastboot, they require different drivers. usually switching usb cables/ports or a reboot of the PC will fix connectivity prollems if drivers are installed and were working prevously

Thanks guys for your replies, hows it going again Brian? lol As for the the phone.... lol

At this moment the timing is not my problem, nor my wire considering jbear wont find my device at the jbear screen. I did some more research on what my phone is doing. I left device manager open and ran jbear once it reboots to the jbear screen, there is no devices connected, but i hear windows recognize it but device manager shows nothing. I simply cant get back to it telling me to do the wire trick. I know it recommends a stock rooted rom, but i read it works with meanrom 2.4 no one said it didnt on 2.6. So i thought meanrom was a stockish rom. I uninstalled all htc drivers and updated them with a universal android driver called naked_driver. Still the exact same problem once my phone reboots it wont talk to it unless i go to fastboot. then run the jbear program. Than it just says rebooting for bootloader, than jbear screen, than no more talking..

Like i said its not life or death, i did figure out how to get to my phone and seems to be working fine.

If you think its a rom issue, can you suggest (with a link) a good rom to flash for hboot 1.58?

right now im downloading the 2.89 shooter ics deodexed rom? I just dont see how a rom is going to fix my drivers disappearing when rebooted to the jbear screen.

Hey Ripbabey! Nice to see you again :)

Well I went onto the Juopunutbear chat to see if I could find some answers for you but you were already there :p

Let me know how it goes!!

the rom has nothing to do with your drivers. my reference to being on a stock rom was in answer to what i saw as a 2 part question in your OP:
1)why didnt the wire trick work
2)whats wrong with my drivers

did you try switching cables, ports, reboot? have you disabled or uninstalled htc sync, pda net, easy tether, and any other program capable of comunicating with the phone?

since youre still having prollems, lets start from the beginning. i have no knowledge of the drivers youre refering to. htc sync drivers seem to work for most folks, but i always use and recomend these modified htc drivers from revolutionary. make sure you have adb and fastboot in the same folder of wherver yuo run your commands(lots of folks put the contents of platform tools into tools if youve set up the entire sdk)

open a cmd window, make sure fastboot is checked off(settings/power),and usb debugging is on.
-does adb devices give you a serial number?
-if so,then adb reboot bootloader take you to fastboot?
-if so,then fastboot devices give you a serial number?
-if so then fastboot reboot back to the OS?
-if so,does adb devices work when you get back there?

if you have trouble with either adb devices or fastboot devices, may want to try manually updating the phone in each mode(fastboot and the booted OS) by manually pointing device manager to the extracted driver folder.

if youre still having trouble, again, different ports, different usb cables... ive learned the hard way not to understimate the ability of a bad usb cable to screw things up when entering commands.

failing that,my first instincts would be that there is something running on the PC thats interfering with the process. ive seen many times where folks look to be doing something 100% correctly, yet still not having success. sometimes they can figure out what the prollem program is and stop it(start with the ones mentioned above) sometimes, they try the exact same steps on a different pc,and lo and behold it works.

do you have another PC you can try in a worse case scenario?

yes, please let us know what the resolution is to your prollem, when you figure it out :)

if all the above stuff checks out with your drivers, then jpbear IRC is prolly the place to be :)

Thanks brian! always looking into answers for me as im finding them for myself:-)

There was never a definative reason, the writer/dev ended up remotely controlling my pc and sat there spitting codes into it like crazy.

It was pretty amazing and through several failed attempts we eventually got it! all my drivers were correct but i might have used the wrong jbear app and messed up something.

Eitherway, i got it, now i just need to find the best s-off rom out there, wondering if i should go back to meanrom and flash the 2.89 s-off kernal that was in the folder but i couldnt use cause i was s-on and see if i can overclock this mofo

Thanks for checking in here and helping out. When i screw things up, im constantly looking for fixes while i await answers. Im a tinkerer and dont like things getting the best of me. So its always hard for me to retrace my steps, find correct files lol there is to much to retrace hahahaha
