Root [CDMA] Newbie root question- sense and 3d?

I am very very new to the android world, so naturally i am new to the rooting world.

I do not have my E3D yet, but when i get it i will want to do the following; Throttle back the processing power to conserve battery when the phone is in standby, remove bloatware, & unlock tethering.

Will i need to get a custom rom for these or will i be able to keep my stock rom and not have to sacrifice things like the 3D, 4G, ect. ect.

thanks in advance

If the Evo 4G was any indication, you can use the rooted stock ROM with a custom kernel to enable underclocking. I did this quite successfully on my Evo. No sacrifice to any stock functionality.

I suspect that you will need to root the Evo 3D to do this though. I doubt the stock ROM will provide any OC/UC functionality, since it's just too much freedom for the average user.

ok so say i am not desperate to underclock the processor, but i really really want to remove the bloatware and be able to tether for free, will i have to get a kernal for that or not?

thank you. i am pretty tech savvy, but seeing as this is going to be my first smartphone and most likely turn into my baby, i don't wanna screw anything up by trying to do something so insignificant as underclocking to save battery life.

just start slow. root so you can tether. then you can get titanium backup to save all your apps. then you can flash a stock rom with bloatware removed, run titanium to restore your apps. Learn about custom recovery and NANDROIDS. Then after some time flash a custom rom with a newer version of GB. Then look into kernels for over or underclocking and modified custom roms that interest you and maybe even some RADIOS if any are leaked/compatible.

thanks a ton, will there be "how to" guides out after a successful root has been done by some Devs?

I have never rooted before. I have helped a friend jailbreak before, but i have never even seen a rooted droid before.

I am just weary of screwing with a perfectly good brand new 3VO.

if you're tech savvy, then you have the foundation. A lot of us here have rooted before, so we have the experience. And we'll be here to help. Rooting is a cinch. Once on the other side, you'll laugh at how simple it all was, and amazed at how much freedom you really have.

I'm going to be presumptuous and assume you know nothing of rooting. I'll therefore guide you to a nice primer for rooting in the Evo 4G section:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html

It gives you some foundational knowledge and gets you a basic vocabulary for all things root.

Any more questions, just ask.

i have read that post before when i was lurking and doing research, but i re-read it again just for clarification, and it did me some good as a refresher.

Hopefully the root is out for the 3VO in a short amount of time after the 24th.

When I got my EVO, it was my first Android phone. I read for weeks until I finally decided to root using a one or two step process by unrevoked. Always went with stock rooted ROMs and now have the best setup yet with the stock rooted Gingerbread.

Sure just in time for the 3D. Yes I pre-ordered my EVO 3D and will start the whole process all over again. I will remove bloatware, add WiFi tether, and a few other goodies. I will not change the speed, or add an app killer (battery life was much better without this). Basically the same as I did on my EVO.

custom ROMs will not be readily available in the beginning, so I'm likely going to optimize the stock ROM until there are some full-featured and stable customs available. I suspect getting 3D working in an AOSP ROM is going to be a big challenge.

oh I see, I always thought rooting automatically got rid of all additions to vanilla android, such as sense

so you can, in fact, root the phone to gain full access, and still run the stock ROM with sense? would this still give you the full advantages of rooting? i.e. being able to run apps that require rooting, or overclocking the phone- or does that require custom ROMs/ kernels.

because i would love to stay on the stock ROM, and also have all the advantages that rooting brings :)

This is exactly what I have on my wife and daughter's HTC Droid Eris. They are still running a stock sense ROM but are rooted. All the bloatware is gone and the a ton of memory is freed up on the phone for apps to run in. In addition, the phones are overclocked. What was once a bloated, almost unusable phone is now quite speedy....

Assuming I get a 3D, I'll root it as soon as there is a safe, quick method. From there, titanium backup and root explorer are my friends.
