Root [CDMA] Not-so-firmware

So I've unlocked both mine and my wife's phones (which much help from y'all, I might add), flashed a couple of ROMs, and the more I think I know, the more questions I seem to have...

I am HTC unlocked (did so BEFORE the ICS OTA), S-ON, running ZR3D-XL (not the newest, but nice nonetheless), and since it's been more than a few days since I tried it, I'm itching to try another (Seems I have THAT bug, thanks again folks! :p). In the past, I've tried to stay away from 2.89 ROMs w/o the VM 2.17 kernel, because of the past issues I had heard of.

Now, it seems that more and more ROMs are being released that REQUIRE the 2.89 base (not just the VM leak), so I started looking into options. I was surprised, however, when I looked at my settings and saw my build was already at 2.89 (see attached).

So to get to the crux of the matter, how do I find out (without having to experience boot loops, etc :D), what my current firmware is? Thanks, yet again!

What hboot? Are you Sprint or Virgin Mobile? The 2.89 build you see, from what I understand, does not necessarily mean you have 2.89 firmware. This was just the base for the ROM build. Knowing your hboot version will more or less tell the difference. For example, I am on Sprint and currently running hboot 1.5 w/ s-off. At one point, I was running MeanROM ICS and under the firmware info. it showed the build as 2.89. However, I was not running all the software bits that made my firmware version true 2.89. Hope that makes some sense. Give us some more information and maybe we decipher your question a bit more.

Go ahead and plug your phone into the computer. Open a command window in your "sdk-tools" directory (or wherever your adb and fastboot tools are located from when you unlocked) and type:
adb reboot bootloader once your phone is in fastboot usb then type:
fastboot getvar all

Copy and paste that info here. It should tell us everything, including whether you are on 2.17 or 2.89.

As far as flashing different roms, I would have to suggest s-off. Then you can easily change hboot versions and base versions depending on what rom you want to flash.

The HBoot is the important one and the base firmware, if you are 1.50 and Base 1.06 and you try to flash Roms that require HBoot 1.58 and Base 1.09 then you will have issues and bootloops. ;) So from what I saw you are Base 1.06 so you will have issues flashing those that require HBoot 1.58, but there are plenty of JB Roms out there that you will like ;)

My apologies for leaving the HBOOT version off. I meant to include that but forgot. It's 1.50.

And I figured the base number was not truly indicative of the firmware, but I could not find out where to find.

Since it seems all the bugs have been worked out with 2.89, I'll be re-locking, loading a stock RUU, running j-bear and freeing my phone once and for all. I've been lucky to have the freedom I've had, but still limited. S-OFF, here I come!

Thanks guys!
