Root [CDMA] Phone broken :(

NYCHitman1

Gun for Hire
Title says it all :(

Long story short, my phone fell and now the screen has become unresponsive. Unfortunately for myself, I'm rooted and now the phone won't launch past the splash screen.

Just passed my 30-day guarantee also. I'm curious if I'm gonna get shafted and have to pay $100 deductible or if Sprint will be awesome and replace/fix my phone.

What do you think I should do?

you could just try to take it to the store and see if they can replace the screen (rather than replace the phone).

Also, not sure if you are alread signed up for TEP, but if not, you can sign up till 8/31 (regardless of age of the phone)

Edit: sorry for your loss... :(

Damn Hit, sorry to "hear" that. Hope Sprint hooks you up. I would ask if you dropped it on purpose so you could get the Photon but since you're past your 30th...

Ouch that sucks. Do you have TEP on the phone? Maybe they could replace the screen for you at no charge. My old 4G had the same issues and they replaced it hassle free.

On another note, my 3D fell out of my pocket and fell down 5 concrete stairs. Everything is still good except for some cosmetic scratches.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have TEP. I just don't feel like I need to pay for a hardware malfunction just b/c I made a software modification. Apparently, that still voids warranty and they supposedly won't touch it. I guess I'll just have to wait and see until I go into the store tonight.

Nothing against the Photon but the 3VO has much more dev support. Would choose the 3VO over and over again for that purpose alone.

Sorry about your phone 'Man. I just got mine all rooted and stuff and I swear I would be in tears if that were to happen to mine. I know that sounds so girly...

Hopefully Sprint will hook you up though. Keeping my fingers crossed for ya!

I'll see if I can find it, but I think I vaguely remember there being a discussion that says that Sprint WILL work on your phone if you are rooted (my paraphrased of course).

Edit: Read THIS LINK. Although it pertains to the Evo4G it may help with the 3vo.

Edit2: Forgot to mention that Novox was the one who I stole the link from :p

Wait,

the display works, but the touchscreen is unresponsive? If that's the case, we have a few options to try on the root side to get it to fully boot (including the possibility of unrooting). You don't need the touchscreen to use recovery.

If we can get your phone booting all the way, then all we have is a hardware defect, and TEP will cover that 100%. Let us know. And we might want to move this over to the root forums if it turns out you can still tinker with HBOOT and recovery.

Oh, I've already confirmed it runs hboot and recovery. I can flash custom ROMs and etc.. but as I stated - the touchscreen is unresponsive. Anywhere I attempt to click on the screen, doesn't work. I can't even get past the first page on the set up phase of the initial launch.

So... if you're concerned about Sprint balking because you're rooted, you have the option to unroot via RUU (which doesn't require touchscreen interaction). Or, you can just take it in as-is and say the touchscreen stopped working and see if they are willing to repair it, or replace the phone.

I suspect they won't care about the root. I assume you're still running a stock ROM with stock boot animations, etc... so nothing in a normal bootup would reveal that you're rooted. And if not, pretty easy to flash a stock ROM.

Do you have a recent NANDroid backup you can restore? If so, once you restore that, your phone will fully boot to your homescreens...

Yeah, my primary concern is whether they will balk since I rooted but, according to that XDA thread - they repair rooted devices. The damage is hardware based and nothing software related. I was running a pretty customized ROM. SupraROM to be exact. Has the AOSP feel to it but still on a Sense base. He customized the boot ani w/ the CM7 animation so they would tell from the get-go.

EDIT: I think I'm gonna go home after work and install a stock ROM and see if I can basically trick them into believing that it is unrooted lol.

Turns out that I gotta go through Asurion to get my replacement. I think it's silly that they make you fill out affadavits in order to get your replacement though. Feels like a waste of my time.

Dude... phone is under WARRANTY for longer than the 30 days... The insurance comes into play when the phone CANNOT be repaired. Your name implies your from NYC, have you brought it to one of the the Sprint Stores? I use the main one on 34th Street. They have repair services which are FREE! Including replacing BROKEN screens... Just sayin...

Also, with the fact that there are no custom ROM's yet, it will be very hard for them to see that you've rooted without digging into the phone which they don't do. You give them the phone, they'll look at the broken screen and try to fix it. There's no need to offer any information, i.e., Rooted. If they say it's rooted tell them they're NUTS!

I've brought my Rooted phones in for repair (Hero) and never had a problem, even returned one under warranty without unrooting it and never a problem. Give it a shot, it seems you've already settled yourself to paying the $100 so you just might save a few bucks.

Regards!
:)

Yeah, in absence of anyone else I've found with this problem, I would have to go along that that is likely coincidence and so there would be nothing fraudulent about getting them to pay.

Mod opinion.

I went to the store. The wires severed from the board which attach to the digitizer. I wouldn't just shell out $100 just for shits and gigs. They couldn't even get past the initial setup anyways since the screen is unresponsive. No big deal. I just wanted to try my luck on the Sprint route. According to the tech, it wasn't something they could fix.

By the way, there are tons of custom ROMs available now.

How would the phone falling and the screen becoming unresponsive, be a coincidence? You drop stuff, it breaks. That's where the insurance comes into play. ;)

He was referring to rooting and broken screen being a coincidence, meaning the rooted phone has nothing to do with the broken screen. Therefore there's no fraud.

Does anyone have any experience w/ getting a replacement phone from Asurion? How long does the process generally take?

I got a dumb phone replaced through them a few years back. It took like 3 or 4 days. Maybe a week. My memory is hazy on the specific details. I remember it wasn't bad.

Thx. Just was curious. I've been trying to contact them to see if they received my paperwork but the stupid automated segment pisses me off.

I've had 3 devices replaced by assurion in the last 3-4 years. They overnighted the phone every time.... Next day I was back up.

Nice. I finally got on the line with a CSR and they let me know that my paperwork has been received but they are waiting for it to be reviewed so I guess I'm just waiting for that person to contact me and then we'll be good to go.
