Root [CDMA] Ready to root

oOMavrikOo

Android Expert
Some of you guys might remember me from the Hero forums. It's been a while since I've been really active here, so bare with me if it sounds like I'm clueless.

I am officially ready to root my 3D. The only problem is that I need to use the HTC unlock method as I have taken the updates :-(

I've read up on using that method. My first question before I start this process is... Is it possible to flash ROMs and other goodies from the phone in recovery, or must everything be flashed from my PC using ADB?

Thanks in advance for any help :-)

You have to flash the boot image/ kernel from fastboot then you can flash the rest.of the ROM zip or whatever else you want in recovery. HTC unlock just won't allow you to write to the boot partition that's the reason for fastbooting the boot image and into recovery.

As MT mentioned on HBoot 1.50 you can do everything, the process is simply different.

:cool:Welcome back to the Party!

About time your ready to get down and dirty like the old days, lol :D

or you can load into fastboot usb and type in the command "fastboot boot yourrecoveryimgname.img"

and flash the entire rom in one flash !

Or flash in recovery without connecting to the PC. You lose 4G and wifi, then just reflash the kernel while loaded in Android with FlashGUI.

I think I haven't done enough research. Alot of these terms I'm hearing are completely new to me and so far away from what I was doing on my Hero. When I rooted my Hero, it was all through ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, and some app that let you root by just tapping an on screen button! The furthest I ever got technically with the Hero was using the Firat mod. I've never used ADB. The only thing I hook up to my PC for is transferring files from the SD card. Now I'm scared.

Well have no fear we are here, first you find out what HBoot you have then we will take it from there when you are ready.

No, but it confirms that you have HBOOT 1.5 :)

Your HBOOT is determined by shutting off your device fully (make sure Settings > Power > Fast Boot is unchecked - or yank the battery out - or hold Vol up + vol down + Power for 5 seconds). Then hold Vol down + power until the bootloader appears. It's a white screen. At the top it'll say HBOOT 1.X (where x is variable). But I already know you're on HBOOT 1.5, so no need to do that :)

To start to root, you need to follow this:

I read the above information and everything sounds pretty cut and dry. I was never able to get the HTC drivers to properly DL on my HP laptop when I was playing with my Hero, so I hope I can get them to work for the 3D. Something I noticed in the second post was that I had to flash new ROMs and kernels from fastboot using the PC. Does that still hold today or can I flash w/o the PC and do it directly from the phone? That was part of the fun for me with the Hero. I really enjoyed being able to just DL a ROM with the phone and backup/wipe/flash straight from the device.

You can, but there's a few extra steps. You can flash a ROM like you did on the Hero, but when you get into Android, you'll need to flash the kernel again using FlashGUI. Or else you won't have 4G or Wifi working.

Maybe I missed this somewhere, but does USB debugging need to be enabled to use HTC unlock? Does fastboot need to be enabled/disabled?

enable usb debugging or you will have issues with adb also disabling fastboot will make it easier to boot to the bootloader manually

which with the htc unlock, it is very important to get familiar with basic adb and fastboot commands

I got started last night. I DLed and installed the necessary files and drivers to begin the actual unlocking process. I got started pretty late so stopped after that. I'm going to try tonight or tomorrow night to actually root.

Good luck and we are here to help if you run into a snag, but if you follow the process to a T you will be fine. ;)

I'm having some trouble. It seems my cpu is blocking the sdk install. It's telling me to turn off my anti-virus and close out any programs using the file it's trying to move. I feel like I've done that and it still won't work. I'm officially stuck. I'm on Windows btw.

***It's saying that it's trying to rename a file. Something about Revision 16. It wouldn't let me continue if I clicked on Yes, so I just clicked No and it got back to installing. Any help is appreciated.

Delete the C:\Program Files\Android\ folder. If you're on 64 bit windows, it'll be C:\Program Files (x86)\Android. If it doesn't let you, reboot and try again. Once it's deleted, try installing the SDK again.

Also, make sure you're installing the most recent version of the SDK: http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r16-windows.exe

I've basically started over. It's re-installing the sdk right now. I hope this works!

I'm UNLOCKED!!! Thanks alot for everything guys. I'll flash the recovery tomorrow. It's late and I have to get up early. On a side note... Can anyone recommend some good ROMs to start with. I've done some research and really don't know what to choose. I'm really interested in trying MIUI. Is there an MIUI ROM for the 3D?

There are many ROM's out there depends on your preference, I would hold off on the MIUI ROM as the support has dropped, and you do not get 4G with it. When ready let us know what you want in a ROM and we will try to guide you.
