Root [CDMA] Rooting newbie, almost ready! But first some final questions....

I'm trying to download from another source now... Not having luck with the one on shipped-roms.

Okay, so I can't find one to dissect. For whatever reason there is some sort of problem with the zip file from both places I downloaded it from. I wouldn't worry too much though. You don't have to change your hboot. You can flash the updated kernels and not touch your hboot. DonB does it, he is running 2.89 build but still has his hboot 1.4 instead of 1.58 that comes with the ICS update. I know for a fact that if you did update your hboot for whatever reason that you can at least get it back to 1.4. You aren't going to notice a difference. They update the hboot just to patch old rooting methods.. 1.4 hboot still lets you use revolutionary. I know you are trying to get comfortable with it all but I think you will be okay.

I checked several places but the two that I actually found downloads were shipped-roms.com and I can't remember the other... Just found it google searching.

Now this isn't to say that the .exe version won't work.. I was trying to download the .zip version so that I could see the contents but for some reason there were no files in it... I have done this before so I know it's possible but for some reason that one was messed up...
 
Hmm.. I could swear I've seen .2 in a few different places. I know I bookmarked some. I'll sniff around and see what I can dig up. Also I'll sign up over at xda and see if I can dig anything up over there. If I can't find it I can't find it but I'd feel better if I did. I remember reading about the bugs that came with .7 when it came out on release day and if I revert I'd be happier not dealing with them. I actually rarely have a problem with .3, I guess i got lucky!

Now what's the exe version? I have seen zip/exe.. whats the difference? Actually I think I saw a post mentioning running an exe and finding the would-have-been-zipped files in your pc's temp folder. Then again I read copious amounts of information...

The exe version is an executable that you run on your computer with the phone plugged in. The PG86IMG.zip version allows you to place on your Sd card and run directly on your phone without the computer. (S-off required??)
But the zip file I can actually look at the contents of. I have not heard of the method you described with the exe... I will look into that later.
 
Just wanted to say before I forget, sweet avatar.

From what I've been reading, not necessarily s-off required. Apparently part of S-off means you can flash stuff not digitally signed by HTC. You can have s-on and still flash roms somehow? I'd have to go re-pull reference material for that... I didn't pay tons of attention to it since I know I can get S-off anyway.
From what you say and what I've read I'd think the .exe does the same thing as the .zip only the .exe automates the process for you. So I'd imagine the .exe's extract the zip files somewhere (like temp) before moving them to the phone.
 
Yes they definitely do that same thing, I just don't know how to get the info from the exe version. I have pulled data out of other PG86IMG ruu's to make my own firmware update files. If there's a way to get it from the exe I will definitely try when I get a chance!
 
Hey been a while since I check in here. Haven't forgotten about this thread just been tied up with life. I still need to check out XDA for more info. Did you get to play with the exe any?
 
Hey! I actually haven't had a chance to play with it yet... I've been busy too and my computer time has been limited. Mostly hit the forums up from my mobile. I wish I had more time to tinker, but lately life has been getting in the way a lot!
 
Boy tell me about it. Rooting has moved towards the bottom of a long list of stuff at the moment.

No way!! Perfect! So you were able to dissect the .exe? And it's 1.3 though it says 1.2 in the name?
If that's the case, I'll be ready to root asap! So what did you do to dissect it? I'd like to give it a try.


Sorry for another MIA period, it's been another busy few weeks. I haven't had a chance to think about this stuff for a while.
 
I used one from shipped roms. Now I can't remember if it was 1.11 or 1.13. Just download the PG86IMG version of the ruu. Then you will need something like 7-zip to be able to explore it.

And I was able to dissect the exe but it is much easier to use the PG86IMG version as it is already in zip form. I just wasn't using 7-zip like I should have been.
 
it'd have to be .11 that' has 1.3 hboot. 11.651.3 goes with 1.30 and 13.651.7 goes with 1.40 to my knowledge.

So the zips work you just weren't using the right program to extract them?

Out of curiosity how did you dissect the exe?

I'll try to play with this stuff over the weekend.
 
I tried one of the zips just now using only windows and it won't read it. Its odd since windows can generally read zip files. You're saying I need a different zip utility to read them?
 
Yep you need a program like 7-zip. I couldn't see it just using windows either.

Extracting the zip from the exe is the same thing as just downloading the zip version. It's just already extracted for you.
. But you do it by starting the exe and then opening your temp folder in Windows. In the temp folder you find rom.zip and then copy and paste that to your desktop (or wherever).
But that folder is exactly the same as what you downloaded. You will still need 7-zip or something like it to view the contents.

Here are my findings thus far.
Shipped roms zip DOES have hboot 1.30 BUT the filename indicates software version 1.11.651.2 and I'm looking for .3
I still think it's a typo as my research doesn't show a .2 was ever released, it was 1.11.651.1 before the official release day then (ditto).3 on release day then, it changes to 1.13.651.7 and on up
Is there any way I can find out? Or does someone have to guinea pig their phone and do it?<--(I figure it'll have to be this unless I run into someone who's already tested the file) Eventually I'll get around to asking on XDA, the typo may be a known thing.

As a note, the zip on the XDA link, the odex one, did NOT open for me at all even in 7zip
 
Actually I supposed the .2 flie might contain the .1 software and not .3
They both had hboot 1.3.

So no one here has any knowledge on it?
 
Having a terrible time trying to register/post over at xda....

I did see a post that may seem to indicate there is in fact a .2 firmware, but on virgin mobile, not sprint.
 
You know, doing more research, it looks like 1.11.651.3 and 1.13.651.7 are the same. The update was just a bug fix on the calendar. 26mb file size. So it's not like it was a major software update. It was just a bug fix. So basically you could run that ruu and be the same. Also, you can make a nandroid backup after rooting. I assume you would use revolutionary, which won't wipe data (pretty sure). It just gives you s-off which is good and keeps your bootloader locked. Anyway, after you have root, you can make a full backup of your phone as-is. Then if you want to restore that backup, it will return your phone to the exact state it was in at the time of backup. So it seems like you have a couple of options.

The 1.11.651.2 must have been pre-release or something. Saw it mentioned in a thread here.

Found the OTA software update here.

There probably is also a very insignificant difference between .2 and .3 as well.

So your options would be as follows.
1.) Restore Nandroid Backup to 1.11.651.3
2.) Run 1.11.651.2 RUU which would be a downgrade but likely no noticeable difference.
3.) Run 1.13.651.7 RUU which would be an upgrade with a bugfix but likely no noticeable difference.
 
Right I remember when .7 came out. It fixed some things... it broke some things. That's why I don't want it. I use the things it broke and don't use the ones it fixed. That was one of the reasons I never updated from the get go. The pre release on sprint was .1, from my reading, the people that got their phones a few days early got that firmware.
The nandroid helps if i'm rooted right? I'm trying to make sure I can go back if I unroot/lock etc.
Ok firmware aside, now I'm confused again. Revo gives s-off but locked bootloader? Thought it unlocked that as well? (how do I know what state it's in anyways?) Actually I thought it changes the bootloader altogether to 1.4.10 if i read right.

I skimmed the link for the .2 software but nothing too clear there.
Still working on getting xda to work so I can ask about firmware there. Pending that I'm ready to go on everything else. I think.

Hey it's all good. It took me a long time to decide to root. I didn't think that revolutionary would change the bootloader... I thought it just gave s-off. Even if so, being s-off, you can flash just the bootloader that you want. The nandroid backup would happen after running revolutionary but would backup your complete current phone state. So you would still be on your same build after getting s-off. You would still be on 1.11.651.3. You could back that up and would be able to restore to that.

As far as bootloader unlocked... Unlocked bootloader will give you extra freedoms and allow you to flash custom roms, but with s-off, unlocked bootloader isn't necessary. S-off giveaway you total freedom.
