Root [CDMA] To root or not to root

Hello All,
I'm buying my daughter's evo 3d tomorrow, and was looking for opinion's on whether to root or stay stock. If I decide to root, I would appriciate some guidance on how to root. Thanks in advance for your opinions and/or instructions.

Don't let the people in the store do any updates to the phone at all. As soon as you can, check the nboot and see if it's 1.5 or one of the earlier 1.4 or 1.3 units. We just got a 1.3 phone from best buy a few weeks ago and I rooted it immediately. If you have 1.3 or 1.4 you can do the revolutionary root on it which is a full root and the best way to do it. Otherwise you have to do the htc method which doesn't give you as much control and is not reversible like the revolutionary is.

Once rooted you don't have to go with one of the custom roms if you don't want to. You can leave it exactly as it is but with the superuser app you can run root required apps like ad free, root explorer and wifi tether to name a few. You can also use the recovery to make nandroids and back everything up in case your phone crashes or just starts acting weird on you.

Rooting is simple if you follow the directions and I can't see any reason to not root. If I got a phone with 1.5 on it I'd still root it but it would require a lot of research on the new method as I don't know anything about it, and I know it gives people some issues when flashing kernals or trying to run wifi tether, plus it watermarks your phone as rooted to htc and sprint.

well i just got a 3vo with hboot 1.3 and i rooted it within the hour. being rooted is the best thing you can do to your phone. you can optimize it so that your battery life is better. it allows you the freedom to do whatever you want to your phone without htc or sprint dictating what is to be on your phone. most roms now have the sprint hotspot hacked as well as bloatware removed.

i just flashed the clean rom a few days ago and i'm using the stock kernel and my battery life has been pretty good. i just had 18 hours with 10% battery left with moderate usage.

plus rooting is pretty simple really. i would start by reading this:http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...vo-3d-rooting-essentials-official-thread.html

if you need assistance please feel free to ask.

well just got the 3d, and it has a 1.5 Hboot, can it still be rooted

yes. it can it is just a little more pain in the a$$ flashing roms and kernels. in the link i provided, you will have to follow the htc unlocking method. also in the thread is a link on how to falsh a rom and kernel. please read everything before attempting to root so that you have a grasp on what you are getting into.

also please feel free to ask any questions.

My question is: How old is your daughter and what is she going to use the phone for? If it's just to use 3d function, make calls, and text, then there is some reason for root. For the more optimized ROMs and kernels. But you have to be careful on what ROM you install. Stay away from CM7 and MIUI, because they don't have certain features enabled (4G, 3D, etc). But I'd recommend staying with something simple and easy, like CleanRom.

If it is her phone, what is the point? I will say this phone works extremely well bone stock. We are all used to rooting our past devices to make them perform better. While you can increase the performance somewhat, it is nothing mindboggling. It is plenty fast right out of the box and I would say battery life is at least very good. Anyway, if there is no reason for rooting then I wouldn't bother.

i just got done rooting my new 3vo today and installed clean rom 2.8 and the kernal to be able to use wifi and 4g all i did was a little googleing and downloading and im very happy with the outcome!

nice glad you got your phone rooted. cleanrom is awesome. i'm getting the best battery life out of the custom kernel that comes with the rom. i might try the cleanless rom sometime soon.
