Root [CDMA] Upgrading to stock ICS then root

Time after time I have tried to flash ics ROMs but have constantly ended up in a boot loop. I was wondering if I could update to ics and then root my phone. I am with sprint cdma, 1.5 s-on. I have tried 4ext recovery as well as the recovery in the newbie guide (can't remember the name). Neither worked. My phone is rooted on stock gingerbread rom but I really want to upgrade to ics. Please any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you definitely can. Are you already rooted on 1.5? I would suggest getting s-off via the wire trick to simplify the process.

I would also suggest sticking with 4ext recovery. That reason you can't flash an ics rom is because you need the 2.89 build on your phone. There are several ways to do this.

Are you rooted already?

Sorry for the late response, but yes I am. I tried the wire trick before, but no luck. How do I get the 2.89 build?

If you were s-off i would just have you run the Ruu.

Before we start make sure you have a micro sd adapter or some way to read/write the sd card without the phones presence. If not I would suggest waiting until you have the ability to do so.

Okay. So moving forward. Download this file.

Rename to PG86IMG.zip and place on your sd card not in any folders.

Reboot into bootloader. When asked to update press volume up to say yes.

When finished press power to reboot. Now hopefully your phone will boot up after this. If it does, immediately rename or delete the PG86IMG file because it's presence will prevent you from booting into recovery. If your phone doesn't boot up, power down with a battery pull and remove sd card. Connect card to computer and remove or rename the file.

So after the file is gone boot into recovery (preferably 4ext recovery) and flash your ics rom. Hopefully this does that trick. If not we will try another step.

Sounds like you done this before ;):p

Sounds simple enough. Only problem is I do not currently have an sd card reader. I will try to get one soon (need one anyways) but in the meantime, do you have any other suggestions?

Well you could run the ICS ruu... This is also simple but since you are s-on you would have a couple extra steps and will require you to re-root. Not hard especially if you already unlocked HTC Dev method anyway. This also wipes your phone in the process. I will post the steps in case you want to do it this way.

1. Download the ICS RUU.

2. Re-lock your bootloader using fastboot command: fastboot oem lock

3. Run the RUU, follow all instructions, connect phone to computer when prompted. Process will take about 10 minutes. Once it's finished you will have stock ICS and be unrooted.

4. Unlock phone again per the complete newbie's guide. You can skip ahead to the unlocking bootloader section again if you have already done this before. Just use the same unlock code you got before and unlock.

5. Flash recovery with fastboot commands. I suggest 4ext recovery
If you use that file rename it to recovery.img and flash it with the instructions from the newbies guide.

6. Choose a or b below.
a.) Flash superSU patch on your stock ICS.
b.) Flash any custom or stock ICS rom that you want!

7. Enjoy your new ICS

Thanks! Since this phone is my only source of communication, I like to do all my rooting on the weekend. I will be sure to let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

UPDATE: Thanks again, I have successfully flashed a custom ROM onto my device. Everything is working smoothly.
