Changing my googlemail account to gmail

I currently have a googlemail account, but want to change the 'googlemail' part of my account to 'gmail' which you can do via my googlemail account.

I then want to delete the googlemail account from my Desire and re-sync it under its new gmail accronym.

However, when I go to delete the googlemail account from my Desire it tells me I need to to a factory re-set and will lose all my data.

Is there another way round this?

What 'personal data' do I lose?

I did a factory reset earlier this week and I lost my POP email settings and needed to download my apps again from the Market. Gmail is easy to set up again - signed in using gmail address during first use no problem. Wi-fi settings, contacts, text messages, music, pictures and videos were all backed up on SD card so they were still there after the reset.
