Root Changing System Fonts: Easiest Way I Could Find

Correction: The easiest way, for Free, I could find. :)

This is not my work. I am referencing these articles:
239 Flashable Font Packs - Change your system fonts the easy way! - xda-developers
xda-developers - View Single Post - 239 Flashable Font Packs - Change your system fonts the easy way!

I have posted a few of my attempts (so I could download them, feel free to try them out) on mandroid (savoxis.com) here: Downloads - Misc

I tried several ways, including a market app called type fresh, but found this to be the easiest. Essentially all you need to do is find a suitable True Type Font (.ttf); here is a link to a very large selection: Download Free Fonts

Making any changes to your system files can be dangerous! please make a nandroid backup of your phone before flashing anything.

1. Once you have what you want you, create a temporary folder on your desktop. Copy the .ttf into the temp folder and rename it Clockopia, repeat for DroidSans, and DroidSans-Bold (you can have a bold version of your font for this).

2. Next open the .zip file with a zip editor ( i used 7zip: Download) .

3. Navigate to: system>fonts

4. Drag each of our fonts from the temp folder to the zip archive and click "Yes" to copy the files, overwriting the previous files. You should not add or remove files.

5. Close the zip editor, and rename your .zip file. I have been using the following format: FontPack_FontName.

6. Move the FontPack_FontName.zip to the root of your SD card

7. Reboot into recovery.

8. Flash the .zip with the recovery option (I have had to toggle verification to make it work.)

9. Once it flashes, reboot the phone. You can clear your cache and dalvik, as this is good practice, but I have had no issues not doing so.

10. Once your phone reboots, check your messaging and mail apps, as well as menus to see if you like the font and it is easy to read. Or, if you like it at all. If you like it leave it alone. If you don't go back to step one with a different font, or restore your nand backup.

This way is definitely easy and straightforward, but the easiest is still the 'font changer' app IMO.

$1.99 from the market but worth every penny.

I took a look it's pretty cool. But doesn't have the fonts that I used. The nice thing about flashing the zip is if you can find a .ttf that you really like, you can just make your own flash.

I love that everything customizable in Android has so many great and easy ways to accomplish them.

Hi, guys I actually found an app that has a really big variety of fonts that can be installed it's called Absolute System it costs money but it is worth it because it gives you more features that you can use.

If you'll notice the article I'm referencing si from teh XDA post. This is just how to change those and make your own if you happen to find a font that was not previously used.

@Valkerie- Meh, I'll try to get a screenshot.... but the point was for people who are interested in doing this (like me) to have a quick reference for how to. But, I'll work on getting a screen shot of the one I'm using later to day.

On the link I posted to the free fonts it's called Geometric 231 BT. It looks really good on the phone though!

How about some sample text from the font packs uploaded?

As requested. This is the Geometric 231 BT font pack. Clean and stylish, also easy no the eyes; much like myself.

Thanks man! Though as a straight male I'm going to have to reserve judgement on the "easy on the eyes" comment...

Perhaps another dumb question. How do I get the custom icons to work? Is that also a flashable ZIP?

The easiest way is to use a launcher like ADW Launcher to change icons. Just find an icon pack you like and AWD lets you change your icons to what ever you like them to be.

I also really like k.c.cole way of changing the font What fun is it to have an app do everything for you anyway Lol? Just go to the following link:http://www.1001fonts.com/ There are so many really good fonts to choose from here. I'm going to be using Carolingia (BigfooT) 1.0. It's under the Calligraphic, Gothic Fonts.

Extra thanks K.C. I did manage to create my own font pack slightly modifying your instructions. I was too lazy to fire up a computer so I did it all on my Ally. I had to modify one of your ZIPs with my fonts since it seems I can't create a ZIP with Root Explorer.

It's awesome man. I'm going to really like having things exactly how I want them to be.

Those were a whole other matter. I saw you got it figured out, so good job. I'm still trying to find a set that are consistent with the Font theme that I'm using.

I found some today, bu they end up being too big, and part of them get cut off, but they are really clean and sharp and fit well with my system font.
