Root Charging Money for Rooting/Customizing Droid

I've been asked to root/flash a ROM by a few business owners who will pay me to do this. I have NO idea what to charge. An hourly rate? A flat fee?

I have a Droid 1 that I rooted and I've tried three different ROMs so far. I'm comfortable with the process and the people who've asked me also have the original Droid.

Help!

How about doing it out of good will. Imagine if the Awesome Devs charged us for these Roms. Where would we be? Just so them how to do it and be done. Open Source.
 
I'm sure that they would be willing to DONATE for your time. Ask them what sort of "beer" money they could possibly hook you up with. Even $5-10 for 30-minutes' work isn't bad in this economy... plus you get to show off your Android expertise :D
 
I say "give me a 20 and ill hook you up"

Or point them to this site and they can read and read and take what it took me about a month to figure all this mess out. (i would just give me the 20)
 
I saw a posting on craigslist, person wanted $50 to "customize" an android device, and that included all programs, like free wifi tether! amazing deal..... Of course if you did not have a clue you could do it all for free, it might sound like a deal....
 
If these are people that you know then dont even say anything. If they are good people they will at least get you some beer. yea it frustrates me seeing how much people charge on craigslist when it is an easy process. Even going through RSD Lite, which I prefer and suggest everybody to do, it does not take that long.
 
I love the fact that we live in this capitalist society.. if you want to charge, charge. No problem & don't feel bad. clearly, they do not want to learn how to do it and do not care and they just want the benefits of it. What's wrong with that? They are adults, they understand what they are doing.

For those guys saying doing it out of free will, or have them donate to a dev or blah blah..screw that. Why? The people said they would pay and clearly understand that and clearly don't want to take the time to learn it.

if it were me, I would say $25 cash + the costs of any cost apps you put on it for them that aid in being rooted (SetCPU, ROM Manager, Root Explorer, MyBackUp Pro, etc) and not feel bad about it 1 bit for 1 single second. Please.

I have rooted 3 friends phones for free & have no problem doing it... these guys and others are just business transactions. get something for your time and effort that they do not want to put it.

Kudos to the guys on CL that will do it for you, I hope they made lots of money off other people not wanting to do it. I love to work on my house, but I will gladly pay someone to install my floors as I simply do not want to do it, learn how, or even care. Get it?

Let me give you a bit more info on this. First, I am ancient compared to most of you here and I am female - I don't work for beer. Period. Hmmm . . . maybe Godiva chocolate.

So, I am a new small business owner running a professional organizing business. I frequently work with small business owners and this is one of those situations. The client is a doctor who is happy to pay for my time just as I would pay him if I needed a doctor. I am not taking advantage of anyone at all. This business is how I support myself and my daughter and the time I spend working on his phone would be time I could spend with another client charging an hourly rate.

That being said, if this were a simple job of just rooting the phone, I probably wouldn't charge anything. I believe in open source 100% and gladly pay for apps or make donations to the developers.

In this case, the client is having me do this to save the cost of buying a newer, faster phone since his contract isn't up for another year. He wants it customized, configured, cleaned up, organized, remove old apps, install new apps, the works. He doesn't want anything to do with it, he just wants it done.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with this post, I was just looking for some guidance. Again, thanks for all the input.

id say charge him like 30 someodd dollars + the cost of apps. as easy as rooting is for those of us who have done it, the peace of mind a new person gets by having someone do it for them is priceless. Look at it this way, they are getting piece of mind (at least to them) that there phone wont be bricked, where as if they did it im sure they would be horrified of bicking their phone. 30$ for peace of mind is worth it in my opinion.
 
I've been considering doing this for a while. The best part about doing it for the D1 in particular is that it's one of the only (THE only?) devices that you can't brick. I agree, $30 + cost of apps is a good deal. Some apps in particular take time to set up (TiBu is one good example), so that extra fee balances it all out if they want TiBu.

I know, this is an old, old thread... but a friend of my daughter's asked me to root her Droid and I politely declined. Reason: if things go south on her phone - and it probably will - she'll have no clue what to do but call ME. And I already babysit three Droids... I don't need to be tied down to another one.

By learning the simple basics, rooting is relatively painless (though it can and WILL be nerve-wracking the first time you do it), and the KNOWLEDGE you gain in the process is priceless. At least if something goes wrong you'll have a basic understanding of what to do.

Read, read, root, buy the necessary apps, read some more, ROM, and go to town! If you DO get stuck, take comfort in knowing that virtually anything that can go wrong with a Droid already has and is covered here in the forums. :)

I unrooted my DInc before I gave it to my girlfriend, simply because I didn't want to do more technical support than I'd have to with her being new to Android.
