Help Charging paused - voltage too high!!! [SOLVED]

Bingo!

I dl'd ICS onto my phone and out of nowhere I started getting this message. I took it to the store, showed it to the sales guy and without really looking at the phone tells me its water damage. Despite that he hands me an extra battery he happens to have laying around.

After about a month of this madness they make ME pay the deductable but yet give me a refurbished phone.

The phone comes with its own charger. TWO DAYS of use and the refurbished unit is now giving me this message. This phone has not been near water or moisture whatsoever.

ITS ONLY A FEW DAYS OLD. Now I've got to go to sprint and see what they want to do.

I am having the same problem now a few weeks after I installed the software update. Ugh very irritating!!!
 
i had the same problem.
I have cleanup the usb port etc....
Nothing happens

Today i have installed "Update Galaxy S2 GT I9100 with JRO03H Jellybean 4.1.1 Firmware"

I can't put the link below because i am new on this forum.

For now my phone is working and i haven't seen the message yet.
 
Hey Guys i have solved the issue.

It is a software issue , i haven't changed the usb port , i have re installed the old version of android 2.3.6

My battery and my phone are working properly...
 
I too have this problem. My phone is 6 weeks old. Has never been near water. It started doing this last week. (Charge paused voltage too high). I ignored it till the battery went dead and wouldn't even turn on. I took it to my sprint store. they said it was a bad usb port and got me a new "refurbished" phone. I took it home and the phone died that night. (on the charger). I looked at it and it had the charge paused voltage too high message on this "new" phone. I can only use it plugged in. I took it back to sprint and they said they were stumped. the tech that could fix it will be in Mon. ??? I have used 4 different usb cables that work on 4 others phones. My Samsung usb kit works on the other 4 phones???? Sprint acted like they had never heard of this prob. That kind of bugs me when I come here and see it is very common.
 
Dear All

I had this problem for last 2 weeks, I updated the firmware from [ PDA:LP7 / PHONE:LPA / CSC:LP9 (INU)]
to [PDA:LPW / PHONE:LPB / CSC:LPC (INU)] on my S2 using kies.
It works fine now :-)
 
guys I have the same problem, I did all the things, even replaced 2 times usb flex cable, but still have voltage problem, slow charging (it takes up to 10 hours to fully recharge, and drains fast), and it powers up automatically if I restart, shutdown, or reinsert battery on the phone. Also I replaced battery & wall charger, but still the problem occurs. The technician cannot find other defects after replacing two times new usb flex cable. Now I got the phone back and still with problems. Any idea what could be the problem? Thank you.

btw; im using cyanogenmod 10 nightly (jelly bean), i'm 100% sure that its not software issue, tried everything like flashing custom roms (went from original ICS), still it doesn't charge fast and shows over-voltage. Its ******* annoying.

I keep seeing this posted as a possible solution. *Which* pin?? Does anyone have a clear picture or diagram of which pin to move, and some ideas on how to move it? It is so tiny in there I can't figure out what people are doing.

I think what they mean by "pin" is the part that goes into the centre hole of the charger connector (I'd describe it more like a blade).
I had this issue with my phone starting last night. As an earlier post said, it's highly likely just a short circuit.
I cleaned my charging port with a pin and all seems good again.
I have the same ICS ROM installed since the day after it was officially released by Samsung, so I would think software issues are not the problem here.
I hope you all get things sorted. :D

In the UK 'rubbing alcohol is called surgical spirit.

My issue happened this morning. I pulled the Samsung charger out and got the error popup. Despite rebooting and taking the battery out, it continued. It even flashed up the charging image when turned off.

**NOTE** this may seem obvious to some, but for the love of god take your battery out when doing this and don't put it back in till you're confident the port is dry.

I used a toothbrush with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on (after dabbing it on a napkin to remove most of it from the brush) and gently scrubed at the port. The rubbing alcohol doesn't take long to evaporate and you can blow on it slightly to speed up the process.

If you don't feel confident with doing any of this, I'd recommend sending it in for a new one.

I'm going to drain the battery right down today and leave it overnight. I'll let you know if the problem returns, but for now, it's fixed.

The real problem is that the charging circuit got "SHORT CIRCUIT", That means if u still keep on running the Phone i might probably go "DEAD". The reason behind it is "Exposure of the equipment to moisture" especially the "CHARGING PORT".

Solution :

1) If u want to continue wid the phone go to the Samsung Aurthorised Service Centre and get the Charging Port or in worst case get Charging PCB (PCB is the Printed Circuit Board over which the entire charging cuircuit including the charging port, power IC and other required items are fixed) change as applicable to your particular case. In Delhi (India) it will cost RS850(CHARGING PORT) to RS4000(ENTIRE PCB EXPECTED COST) .

2)If u don't want to continue... Sell IT. If possible with the problem..

"I feel samsung mobiles are full of troubles and poor quality. There are so many models of a single phone and the samsung regularly launces new models into the market very frequently and that also without proper testing and quality checks & that is the reason because of which we all are facing so much trouble with particulary samsung phones (from samsung low range phones to high range phones).

Jus to support wat i said above: When I went to samsung mobile service center at Ghaziabad at 11:00AM my wating number was 150. can u imagine tat, the store opened at 9:30 AM. The guard told me there was a Que even before the store could open. !! GOD SAVE SAMSUNG USERS!!

Hi All. I have had the same problem for just 2 days but after reading all the threads I believe I have it fixed. Look into the usb port on the phone with a magnifying glass - it is not disimilar to your belly button! Full of fluff etc from your pocket/purse or wherever you keep your phone. Use a long THIN needle to carefully scrape the crud out. Then a good blast with a hairdryer and voila!

Hi guys. i have joined the forum. I have also upgraded to ice cream and experienced the same. Samsung could not help. Their system of feedback is not user friendly. They referred me to local "Samsung Agency" as they reckon it is a software problem. The "Samsung Agency" told me its a hardware problem in the S2 phones. He claims the USB board is not compatible with the ice cream as it was designed for ginger bread. Now my phone is in for replacement of this USB board. Samsung disputes this version. Bear in mind that it is their repair agency. Apparently this claims they have repaired 2 Galaxy S2 phone with similar problems. I am still waiting for my phone to come back. Obviously its done at high cost.

I think before any galaxy S2 user attempts to root or even carry out the factory reset, it might be better to carry out a process of elimination first.

When this message came up on my phone, the first thing i did was power off the phone for at least 1hr. When i switched on the phone, i didn’t get this message again and there was no problem charging the phone, either by the charger or the usb port!

I was surprised to receive this error message, but i suppose i do use the phone to watch youtube vids on most nights, for two solid hours straight, so i guess it was just a matter of time before i received such a message.

After a week of dealing with the same problem . I called ATT and Samsung and they determined that it was a device problem. But as I was packing the phone- I found the FIX. In the charging port was a little piece of "pocket cotton" little white fuzz that I believe got in there from when the phone was sitting in my pocket at one point. I just used a small pair of tweezer to remove it- and NOW I HAVE NO MORE PROBLEMS with the "charging paused Voltage too high

I could also send it direct to Samsung (Has anyone had any dealing with Samsung direct? Do they supply postage for the phone etc?)

Or i could try and repair it myself since i think i know the problem is the USB port, however would that void any warranty that is on the device?

Any input would be great as atm i am having to us a Motorola Razr :(.

im having the same prob with my galaxy 2,have for 3days now,i have geek squad insurance but by reading these answers it doesnt sound as tho im going to have much luck with getting the issue resolved

Welcome to Android Forums!

On the contrary, you should have no problems. If it's a hardware fault then the manufacturer's warranty will apply, and anything else will be covered by your insurance policy.
 
Hi all,

about 1/2 year ago my s2 android 4.0.1. showed these first symtoms mentioned here: overvoltage. But it went away by itself. However, since jan2013 this problem reoccurred and became permanent. So I sent it back to dealer. Dealer sent back to samsung. After 2 weeks i got it back. All they did was installing the newest version android 4.0.4.
Of course the problem still persists so i sent it back to dealer again..dealer to back to samsung..Apparently they (samsung and dealer) did not even bother to check if the problem was solved by installing the latest android version...

I am kind of tired of this. the S2 is supposed to be a high-end product which i paid 500€ for. This kind of service by samsung makes me kind of angry. Does Samsung really think it is too big to fail? How can it be that they just sent it back without properly looked at the problem which is very well known all over the net??

I am told to wait for at least 4 more weeks. I'll keep you update when this problem on my s2 has been fixed..

I cleaned the charging port with a small needle. It did have dusts and other stuffs on it. I also bent the pin to bring it to the center position with little pressure. The pin had bent to the lower side a bit. And I did all this with my phone switched on with blinking battery icon and at one time the blinking icon gave up. It was all stable and I switched off the phone to check the weird 'no switch off' issue. The phone did not switch on by itself. I guess I may have found the solution to this problem on my phone.

It's no way related to ICS or any other software. It's a hardware issue!!!

This is my first post ever but I cleaned the charging port and bent the pin back to the strong side now it is fine thanks
 
Ok so here I am on this thread after reading about the "Charging paused voltage too high" problem on the internet for HOURS.
I use a custom Gingerbread ROM on my S2 and my phone always worked great. Last week I accidentally splattered a soft drink on my desk and a little bit got on my phone. I wiped it off and later that day started having strange battery problems. Oh, and I can't connect to a computer anymore to transfer data.
I wasn't positive that it was caused by the soft drink spillage so I decided to flash a new ROM and see if that would fix it. I loaded a custom ICS ROM and immediately started getting the "Charging paused voltage too high" warning. The phone seems to charge to 100% but when I disconnect the charger it still thinks it is charging and will stay at 100% for a couple hours, then plummet to below 50% and die out fast, just like before when I had GB.
All this plus reading internet posts leads me to believe it is a bad micro USB connection. I took it to the Sprint store and asked if they had any tools or methods to clean/fix my USB port. They looked at it under a microscope and said the pins are badly corroded and the problem will only get worse and my only option is to upgrade to a new phone since I don't have insurance. They didn't even suggest that the USB connector could be cleaned out. Thanks Sprint.
So now I am going to try 2 things.
1. Try cleaning out the USB port with alcohol and a toothbrush. I think this will only be a temporary fix though or might not fix it at all.
2. I ordered a replacement USB connector on Ebay. It was 2 connectors for $7. Since I'm an electronics engineer I have access to precision smt soldering tools. I don't know but I'm guessing a regular home hobby soldering iron will not be suitable for the tiny legs on the USB connector.
I also found a service on Ebay to replace the USB connector for $40. So that's another route to go if you don't want to take the phone apart and solder in it.

I'll post later when I have longer term results.
 
Update:
I have access to a microscope at work. Turned off the phone and removed the battery. I looked at the USB connector and saw a lot of gunk in there. I used a tool similar to a dental pick to scrape a layer of stuff off the pins and gunk that was around the inside of the connector. I spent about 20 minutes painstakingly doing this. The connector is so tiny there is NO WAY to do this without a microscope!
And then I took a little piece of lint-free tissue wetted with alcohol wrapped around a toothpick and scrubbed the pins some more.

All problems are gone, the "Charging paused" warning message is not popping up, and the phone is working perfectly. The battery is not draining fast, and I can connect to a computer and transfer data again.

SOLVED.
 
On Ebay I found some silicon micro USB covers that plug into the port when you're not using it. A 10 pack is $7 I bought them and I am going to use them from now on.
