safety is all in the drivers hand too. I know plenty of people who would be better off in small cars because they cant handle a truck. cars are very individual and theres no one better than other since everyones needs are differemt.

This! Teens that just got there licenses get SUVs from their parents because "they're safer". When in reality the kid just needs more seat time behind something that weighs half as much so they can learn how to drive and not kill someone.

There's plenty of people roaming the streets in SUVs that have NO business driving one!

Haha. I never understood guys who want to run around in big 3/4 ton trucks that they use (really use) once in a blue moon. Maybe it makes then feel manly? Maybe they need that 3/4 ton for... that trip to IKEA with the misses? Maybe they just like getting 15 mpg?

[And yes I've owned a truck. I drove a Dakota for a few years and I worked that harder than most guys work full size trucks. Which brings up my next "lol" point. I swear guys with full sizes buy them for the image and keep them spotless. Guys with the midsize and compact trucks actually use them and you can tell. After college I stopped doing that kinda work and realized it was silly to keep it.]

Anyway, I am a Dodge / Mopar guy (I've owned four) but I currently drive a Subaru. I like older Mopars but when I was in the market for a more sensible car all the Mopars at the time sucked.
actually, i own a dakota and beat the dog sh%$ crap out of it....lol....

id like a bigger truck but its not in the financial cards, especially after putting the wife and kid in a seqouia.
but i figure i can do what i need to do with my little truck and hopefully (i pray) they will be safer in their seqouia.
i never said a man has to have a big truck, all i said is i dont understand how a guy can do the things he needs to be able to do without one.
now if it were doubling as my families ride, then i would try real hard to get a bigger one for the added safety factor. but since only i drive it, it will work.

Do you think this is true for your part of the area? I know here in Texas we use our trucks whether it is a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, whatever... the exception are some folks that get a Escalade.

tl;dr (to long; didnt read).
toyota/honda.....sorry, those are my choices.

a big toyota preferably. my wife now drives a toyota sequoia after me having drove a semi over the road for a couple years, i wanted her and our little one in something bigger.

id like a 4 door toyota truck, because im a guy and i like to be able to haul and move things when i need to, which is pretty often. also want to be able to run over things and get around in bad weather.

never understood men that wanted to run around in a little sports car and didnt at least own a junker truck. how do you do anything you actually need to do?
haul off junk, haul wood and brush, tow other vehicles or pull stuck vehicles, buy furniture?
what, do you pay someone every time you need to do something?....call your buddy with the sense to act like a man and own a vehicle that does his family some good?
sad.

so because I dont own a truck im not a man? im sorry thats just bullshit, its useless for me I work in retail and have no need to carry anything large. When ourchasing new furniture 90% of the time the place you purchased it from will deliver it for free. I just purchased a new 50" plasma, PS3, wall mount and 5 speaker stands I was able to fit all this in my little 2 dr cobalt no issue and was able to keep everything out of the rain while transporting.granted thats not a ton but as I said most if not all furniture places deliver for free.

So I dont need a truck for work. Dont need it to transport house stuff. yard work gets picked up off the side of the road (brush leaves branches etc...) Speaking of bad weather, I live a little south of Boston and just got 20 inches of snow. I was able to travel through all the snow better than most people on the road. So being able to travel in bad weather is as much the driver as it is the car.

What year Dakota?? I had an '03 club cab. Last car I owned that had crank windows haha.

You wouldn't feel safe putting your family in a 3800 LB Dakota???

There's plenty of ways to do things without a truck. Grab a utility trailer. Then you can get 30+ mpg but still have the utility you need the few times a year you need it.

Haha. I highly doubt everyone in Tejas uses their trucks as trucks the majority of time. I'm not saying YOU don't, but I doubt the majority do.

I have nothing against trucks. I just find it comical that some people buy them just for the image and can't admit it. My brother in law was like that when he first got his brand new Taco. The guy wouldn't put anything in the bed. Me? I had everything from cold patch to furniture to car parts in the bed of my truck.

I feel ya. While I was renting I had very little use for a pickup. All the furniture I've bought either was delivered free or I put into the back of my car.

I feel manly even when driving my Subaru lesbian-mobile. haha

'07 Dodge 4X4, Cummins Diesel, 6spd manual, 35" BFG KM2, 400hp & 700ft lbs. of tourque. Knocks down 24mpg on a road trip. Whats not to love. Hills, what hills!

nah man, i dont think its big enough. dont get me wrong; i understand completely the higher center of gravity roll over effect, that some smaller vehicles may have better safety factors, that rich people can afford safer vehicles, etc. etc. Its basically after driving a rig for 2 years and seeing so many accidents and the insane level of stupidity that adults show behind the wheel....i just couldnt take anymore and tried to put them in a good size vehicle with some safety options. The road is such a scary place.

for me i need something i can abuse and load heavy stuff in. cant be to tall to get a load in and cant sit so low it wont haul or get over things; about like you were saying you used yours.

I didn't think I would make a collision so soon after the debate re: the Safety issue as debated earlier in this thread. But, I just made one... This JUST happened.

In fact, took some pictures with the DROID X. Pictures aren't so good, but they demonstrate my point. (I used FireWorks to add some text)

Here is the small car, which was hit by a big truck: Car is totaled. 4 people trapped inside, and injured to varying degrees, all went to the hospital.. as you can see, we had to use extrication tools to get them out... Fortunately NO FUEL was spilled/ignited. That would have been horrific as they were TRAPPED/could NOT get out.

Now, here is part of the Truck, a wheel that was LEFT at the scene! The truck DROVE AWAY. Notice this is not just the tire and wheel, but the spindle, the tie rod, and the rotor. The truck DROVE AWAY after the impact- without a wheel... (This signifies the impact the truck took)

Here is the truck, found 1/2 mile away. Parked in a parking space. The driver simply opened the door and walked away. (apparently evading police). The drivers door didn't even jam..

And lastly, here is the side emblem on the truck:

I wouldn't have posted another statement regarding this debate, had not so many FALSE statements been made regarding the safety of vehicles.

It would be ONE THING to make your choice KNOWINGLY. That is everyone's right. Drive what YOU want to drive.

But, no one should be told, 'oh, don't worry, that small car is just as safe as that big truck".. and then they make a decision based on that erroneous information. That's not right. That could put someone at risk.

Love your small car.. there is nothing wrong with that.. we can't eliminate all risk in our lives... but acknowledge it.. "Death rates in single-vehicle crashes are higher in smaller vehicles than in bigger ones, and people traveling in small, light cars are at a disadvantage, especially when they collide with bigger, heavier vehicles."

OK... end of public service announcement.

:) This might be a little sexist, but.. I get quotes each day in an email..

here is one from Rudyard Kipling yesterday:

"A woman's guess is much more accurate than a man's certainty."

At the risk of getting hammered, I think there is a lot of truth in that quote. :)

.and yes, I agree, that BIG RED TRUCK just above is BEEEE-UUUUUU-TIFUL!

I think this thread has taken it's toll.... Now it's just getting absurd and out of hand.

/thread

Might I also add that 11 deleted posts later that I am AMAZED that people feel the need to belittle other members of the forum (or anyone for that matter) because of the cars/trucks they drive or don't drive.

VERY disappointing... :(
