Clear your Cache!

The biggest criminals to your battery, seem to be the places app, and anything GPS related, but it's needed for anything to run right. gtalk, seems to be a resource hog too, this android stuff reminds me of the ms-dos days. New, and in it's infancy.

There are new technologies that haven't come out yet that make a Li-Ion battery look like a 20 pound weakling, but until that stuff gets to market, we have to use what we got. Cleaning the cache is a start, and turning off apps that can drain, by their persistance to stay on, is a bonus. The problem I have with android is hurting the os, when you freeze or delete apps that drain the battery, i want the same functionality, (everything working in harmony, and using what you want to), without killing the battery,I wish someone would work on a rom that stresses that, thats a rom I would install, dam the consequences!

When you get that figured out, the entire Android Community (not just Ascend) will thank you, and thank you and thank you!

:D

We can start a thread called How to conserve the Battery - Huawei Ascend.

Even the manual has a lot of very good tips that I think most just ignore.

I'll get to work on some things to add. Do you want to create the thread?
My battery stayed in the green for 38 hours. I am using the overclock widget too. I set the minimum and maximum to be the smallest possible when the screen is off (123 for both min and max). I set the refresh time to 10 seconds as not to lag the phone too much when I start the screen (Tried 5 seconds, Killed battery faster). I have 245 as minimum and 600 as maximum when the screen is on. I do use Antivirus Free. I did eliminate my weather and youtube widget. You see I decided to just keep My Extras with Metro. It gives me the weather each morning, I can also check the next 4 days as well if I'd like. I also at one time had a picture widget. It seems that the less widgets you've got going, The better. Though the overclocking widget seems to HELP not hurt my battery. I had wifi on the phone the whole 38 hours, I used it for texting, talking and other random applications (Yes I even used Pandora for about 25 minutes!). Didn't think my battery could last that long. Guess this is the concept of less is more?

P.S I am using Go Launcher Ex, Default with 3 screens. Wallpaper scrolling disabled. I also turned off *most* of my data sync programs (I don't need to check my email every 2 seconds). I do have a live wallpaper running. I use "Shake them all". It's constantly running but, I've got it on minimum settings. Any other questions, Feel free to ask!

To the people asking about task killers, you should do some googling and read up on why you don't need one. The android os is designed to have processes running in the background. I know it is instinct to want to shut everything down, but the android system will just start them up again which takes more energy and memory resources than just leaving them alone. Things you see in the background are not using much if any battery, they are just sitting there taking up space because the os is designed to have a certain amount of memory filled up. When the os needs more memory, it will shut something down in the background to free up the memory it needs. This is according to Google, not some internet rumor mill. Like many others, atk was the first app I downloaded on advice of well meaning people. After learning more about it, I got rid of it, and if anything, battery life and phone performance has slightly improved. Hope this helps.

I use Go Launcher Ex, In the menu you get the option of All, Recent, and Running. If it's essential I shut something down because I am not using it, Nor is the phone using it, I just click the close circle on it. I'm very careful in choosing what I turn off. I only turn off things like LOLdroid and Market, and things my phone are essentially not using if I'm not using them. This does help my battery but, I know if I turn off things like Metro Wifi, It will just restart. So that serves no point to turn it off in the first place. I think if you aren't sure if you should use a task killer, You probably shouldn't. A better option would be to download a battery saver app that will shut down all unessential programs when you need it to. Though with everything, Always read up before you do anything! ^^.

Do NOT worry about Apps running in the background.
Android is different to most other phone operating systems. It's closer to Linux than any other type of operating system. Lots of services and applications constantly run in the background just like they do on Windows. However, and this is important, they do not have to use up a ton of resources. A service or app can be loaded, yet use almost no additional memory, and 0% CPU until it actually has to do something.
In general, killing off stuff is a waste of time. Android automatically asks apps to close that aren't needed when it needs more memory. Killing off some of the processes you are killing off also means it'll slow your phone down, as these processes only need to reload, and when you do need to use them it means the phone will be slower for the few seconds it takes to reload them.
Why Task Killers are a bad idea:

ongoing:android_myths [CVPCS Android Wiki]

What people don't seem to realize is that android is designed to have a large number of tasks stored in memory at all times. Why? Well basically we are talking about a mobile device. On a mobile device things tend to be slower. The hardware isn't as robust as say a desktop or a laptop, so in order to get that same

Thanks. I was trying to keep it short and simple because I only have my phone and it's a pain to type long messages. There is a ton of info about this out there. (and quite a bit of arguing)

I know what you mean. I read this forum from my phone, but do more posting from the desktop.

I decided to be a little risky and used the powerclear option in CacheMate. It cleared more GB than it usually does and it didn't do anything to my phone. It actually made it slightly faster for a bit. Just sharing my info. ^^.

I had to get rid of juicedefender, it seemed to be too intrusive, no matter how I set it, and it seems that the battery last longer. I just use cachemate, and maybe the running task killer in GoLauncher, maybe 3 times a day. Still I would like to know if there is a higher capacity battery for this cell. Still waiting for froyo, heard somewhere that it's less of a battery hog.

Hi Reggie! I did the same with JD. It only slowed my phone down. Cachemate is the BOMB! Love it! I don't use any task killer of anti virus apps. All they do is run in the background slowing you down.

Everyone I know, regardless of what phone, what carrier, if they have an Android they complain. It's just the nature of the beast! LOL ;)

I was thinking about that, JD, Im doing the cache mate now and looking for another music player later.

Power Amp (IMO) is the best music player available, but it is kind of pricey. They have a free version though so you can try it out before you buy it. :)

I'm new to my phone and to the forum, my first post=)

Can anyone please recommend a good cache cleaner for non rooted phones? I have only seen one mentioned so far. I know most of you are rooted, and may consider that in the future.

I have gotten some very useful info here so far, so thanks to everyone that contributes!

I've read about ACCleaner. This is for non-rooted phones. Good luck. It's the only one I'd found that was free. ^^. I know you've already read about that one though..Perhaps go browsing through the Market a bit?

Okay thanks. I was looking for a cache cleaner that would work for those who choose not to root their phones. If you run across one let me know will ya?[/QU

"Apps to SD" pro version cleans the cache on unrooted phones.
I'd heard somewhere that apps2SD only works with Froyo or higher if the phone is unrooted. Though I believe the Icarus I'm running has it enabled, Though Icarus comes already rooted. I have no idea. *Thinks*

the a2sd on icarus 1.1 kicks regular Apps2sd in between it's teeth. :D

it will move all apps you download to the sd.
i have a 1g (more precisely 959MB) a2sd partition on a class 4 8GB card with 80-some odd apps d/ld and 827MB free.
i also have 126MB free internal of 198MB and when i had my delvik cache on the card i had about 170MB free internal. phone went all stupid on me though so i put it back where i got it. :o
