Clearwire: Houston and surrounding Cities

But isn't Clearwire home service (via a modem) something different than Sprint HTC EVO?

Now, it's between 2-3 MB/s with 2-4 bars. Even on 4 bars, the 3G isn't far behind the 4G. I get 3G of 1.5-2.5 MB/sec. And NO, it wasn't a problem with the phone as it was the same on 3 different EVO's that I bought. I also traveled in about a 10 mile radius with the same results.
It will be nice if Clearwire can get up around 6 MB/sec on 4 bars. The MOST I've seen is 3, but hardly ever.

I'll say, looking at the maps.. clear & sprint...the areas seem to share similar 'coverage' and that apparently trees do a hell of a job blocking/weakening signal.

Hardy rd 'tween fm1960 to cypresswood... you're not getting 4g until your maybe 100-150 yards from I-45

Sprint uses Clearwire 4G for Sprint's 4G. It should be the same, but the handshake or the Clearwire towers have a problem in the Houston area. A Clearwire 4G home modem talks to the same tower that the Sprint EVO 4G does when you have 4G turned on AND it has a connection.
The speed has increased in the last couple of weeks, but it's still only around 3 MB/S with 4 bars. From what they advertise, it should be about twice that if the tower doesn't have heavy use. According to my Sprint Tech, Clearwire Tech is telling them that my tower isn't used heavily.

They're still working on it.

I did have a question as to if the Sprint/Clearwire relationship could go away fast. I was told that it wouldn't. After doing a Search on the Internet, I found that Sprint owns 57% of Clearwire.

Here is a screenshot that I just took. This is about as good as it will get anywhere within a 10 mile Radius in NW Houston. I haven't ventured any further with good results.
It's also interesting that on 3G, I get a server in Houston, Austin, etc on the Speedtest.net But on 4G, it always gives me one in Kansas as being the closest.

That is because the 3g signal is local, The 4g signal is being re routed, probably for repairs or upgrades..

That will also cause an inaccurate reading on the speed test.
 
I was just told yesterday while on the phone with the tech, that there is a problem with the EVO handshaking with the 4G towers. He said they are working hard on a Fix and that it was going to be a Firmware fix. He had me run tests, was looking at the tower that I was on, and the radiation pattern. I'm only 2000 feet from the tower, and I can see that tower, just didn't know it was my 4G tower until he told me the distance, and direction from my house. I was really surprised as to how much info he had access to. He said there was only 41 users on this tower.
Anyway, if he told me correctly, I'm looking forward to a fix.
 
Yes I appreciate the explanation Scooterman1.

During the trial period I had Clearwire (using the G series modem) I was getting somewhere around 10-13 Mbps download and barely getting to 1 Mbps upload during 'good days' meaning no atmospheric instability. During stormy weather I was getting only 2-4 Mbps download (down to 1-3 bars instead of 5). My location was approx. 0.6 miles from the closest Clearwire tower/antenna (according to the folks at the kiosk where I signed up).
