make a new folder in your c drive and name it "android" then cut and paste all files including platform-tools and tools into it and make sure you edit your enviromental settings

Hi all! I just got my new Virgin LG Op Elite today from Amazon and I have been eagerly watching all the forums for weeks waiting for a more direct aka 'simple' root. I switched off of a Sprint HTC EVO 4G to the Elite and so far I love it.

Now, the tricky part. When I rooted my EVO 2 years ago, it was such a breeze; there was no need to connect to my pc; just downloaded a few files to the phone and ran them; lobster!!

So, while I REALLY DO APPRECIATE Hash's AMAZING work (and everyone else's) I am just mortified from reading Elite horror stories of 'rooting gone bad'. I honest to god DID read the steps several times; I didn't skip them. However, I guess I'm a bit blonder than I realized because I'm not clear what to copy to where and now to connect the Elite to my Win7 machine.

Sooooo, without sounding too whiny, can someone please 'hold my hand' a little through this? I am so petrified of turning my new love into a brick and having to mail it back to Amazon but I know how awesome it is to have root. AdFree alone is worth it for me!

Do you have ADB (Android Debug Bridge) installed on your machine? I have Win 7 as well so I am familiar with troubleshooting with it You need to get that set up first. Just Google adb and it should be the first link that will tell you how to download and set up that.

I honestly have not heard any real horror stories about bricking the Elite in exception to a few that volunteered to try out a few test things with getting a custom recovery installed, but that's a lot different than rooting and they knew the risk. I did get stuck in a bootloop yesterday after trying the click method the first time because I ran reboot abd and clicked continue too early after I realized I had to wait for the Virgin splashscreen to show. I just redid the entire proceedure and was just fine afterwards. If you cant get things going after you've tried, I do have Skype worst case scenario and can try to help you through that way if you want. But do try to at least get the adb and files downloaded before starting.

Yes, and make sure to do 'android' with lowercase 'a', I am not sure if it will mess up with the 'A' but just to be sure. All the files that you downloaded from Hash need to go in that directory.

I always remember that I was new and had no clue what I was doing with this stuff once too. You'll do just fine as long as you're a friendly ditzy blonde

Yes, you need to download the sdk and change the folder name from the default name to "android". I think the default name might be "android-sdk-windows".

Then you will download the advanced files, and they will be put in a folder that is INSIDE the android folder you made earlier. The advanced files will be in a folder called "platform-tools". That is the default. Now you should have your adb files located at "C:\android\platform-tools".

You will then extract the downloaded files into the "platform-tools" folder. Once you do that, run the downloaded file called "(START ME TO ROOT!!!)LG Optimus elite root". The program will take it from there.


Now, to the Dev team, I have an idea for simplifying the process, but I need some input before I do it.

Basically what I want to do is make a feature for the program that will automatically set up adb. Now, theoretically, since the program only runs adb commands, I should just be able to have the program extract the adb.exe right? I Dont think the entire sdk would be necessary because you don't need any virtual devices or system images. So if somebody could clarify that for me I would greatly appreciate it.

I also plan on taking out the build.prop editor and making it a completely different program. I'm going to do this because 1)its not involved in the rooting process, and 2) the build.prop is the same for all androids. So if I clean it up a bit, I could put it out to the android Dev community as a whole rather than just our little slice.

The SDK is the software development package. Think of it as the main program. ADB is the android debugging bridge. It is like a feature of the program. You need to install the sdk, then install the adb

Download the sdk here- http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

When you download and install it, open up it's folder(usually it is android-sdk-windows), and there will be something called SDK manager. Start that, and near the top will be a checkbox that says "development tools". You need to check that and install it with the button at the bottom. Then once you get those installed, toucan use the program.

But remember, the program needs the ask folder to be named "android", instead of "android-sdk-windows", so rename the folder once you get done.

Just to clarify, when you open up the sdkmanager and do that stuff with the development tools, that is the adb it is downloading and installing.

I'm having trouble with the giantpune root. When my phone is in DIAg mode, I start it up, press execute, then everything's fine. "Exploit called successfully."

But then I press continue...

"Error: The system cannot find the path specified.

Did you run the MSL bypass before you did that? The msl bypass pushes all the important files to the device. And something I've found with windows 7, is that for some reason, if you plug the phone into a brand new port, it will reinstall the drivers and make it work. Idk why.

Yeah I ran the msl bypass, got all the files, and installed the data from the ministro app. And I installed the drivers in the last step. Any other ideas? I know my files are in the right place. I also tried plugging it in to a different port like you said.

No. That's something I plan to work on when I get access to my computer again. Once the ministro starts on your phone, you go back to the steps menu and go on to the next step.

I used this (giantpune's root via LG Optimus Elite Root v2.0.exe) after updating to the new ZV5 firmware.

I wouldn't say it was a completely smooth process, but I got it to work. Nice job.

I am ready to toss my Elite out the window. lol

I have checked and re-checked that everything is installed and in the correctly named directories but when I attempt to launch the Elite Root file, I get a '.NET' error saying I don't have .Net installed and the installer terminates. I have checked over and over and I DO have .NET installed and it is current.

I can't get past the LG Optimus Elite Root 2.0 exe step; basically step 1 and I've been trying all weekend to fix this.

Any ideas??

Interesting problem. You may want to try removing .NET Framework 4 and reinstalling through Windows Update as described in the "Answer" here - Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (KB2446708) - Microsoft Answers

the .net issue is resolved; thank you for the clean up tool. it was the only thing that resolved it; removing and reinstalling .net alone didn't work

however....

the device has debugging turned on. driver is supposedly installed. but, it won't verify the device.

i knew this was going to be much much more difficult than my old EVO but i'm about ready to give up.

any ideas of what to do now??

Did you install the drivers from LG's site? http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-VM696

Under the "MANUALS & DOWNLOAD"-heading, click on the "SOFTWARE UPDATE"-tab. Then click the "DOWNLOAD"-button directly below "USB DRIVER for Windows." There will be a few drivers to install, be sure to install all of them.

Looks like you have Android SDK in wrong directory. You have it in c:\android-sdk and it needs to be in the c:\android for this to work.

You can try just renaming the android-sdk directory to android and see if it works. If not remove and reinstall Android SDK to c:\android

First I would like to thank you hashtag because this is the closest I've came to rooting my elite but I'm not that advanced with technology and I'm still getting stuck in the second stage (driver setup)

I would just also like to ask if the unlock root or super one click would work for the elite or if there is something like those programs that work for the elite.
