Root CM6 radio and kernal

I've just started using the stable CM6. I really like it, but two issues.

The battery seems to drain faster, and signals all seem to be lower. Where I used to get 4-5 bars I now get 2-3.

I'm guessing the battery issue could partly be because of the radio, getting a weaker signal and burning more battery to keep it.

What kernel/radio combo are you guys using with CM6?

Haven't loaded up the old ROM to see what the dbm strength was, but I have seen it switch to 1x instead of 3g a few times in areas I never saw that before.

I get the 1x when I send Texts, then switches back to 3G.
I'm using CyanogenMod7 - Nightlies.

I flashed my first kernel tonight. Invisiblek's #28. Love it so far. Phone it fast smooth & it boots so fast.

EDIT: btw I am running CM 6.1 (my first & only ROM

Have any of you guys experienced signal loss when flashing to CM6? I still haven't compared the dbm to what I was getting with my other ROM, but I used to be able to stream music all day with my phone on top of my computer, now it craps out and I get data connectivity problems a lot. EVDO ~95-100 dbm. I know not a great signal, but I was able to stream all day before with about that same signal range if I remember.

How much would a kernel control that? Would a new radio do better?
