you may want to take a look at the kernel version i worked with giantpune while he developed a oc'd kernel for my sprint OE and the wifi wouldn't work then i too a look at the stock kernel vs the one he made and it was as simple as the new one had a + symbol after the name once he got rid of that it worked just fine, he did mention that the wifi drivers are not open source so they do require the kernel to be named properly for example mine is 2.6.35.11-perf but the one that was in his oc kernel was 2.6.35.11-perf+ which causes the driver not to load for some reason.
Again this is for sprint OE not sure how different VM OE is but worth checking into.
