General concept of having to use convoluted (and risky) software tricks in order to make an unofficial, unendorsed modification work. The details vary from lagfix to lagfix, whether it's layering a virtualized ext2 (!!!) filesystem with a loopback on top of a software shim in order to make it work on the native RFS filesystem, or whether it's taking early beta code for the Captivate's kernel, hacking in native ext4 support, and then hacking in tweaks to try and make it close to as stable and feature-supported as the newer stock kernel. Or trying to hack up a kernel for different hardware entirely to try and make it work on the Captivate's unique hardware. And so on.

And therein lies the problem. Most people installing hacked ROMs and "lagfixes" have no real sense of what they're actually installing and what they're actually doing to their phones, or the potential consequences. They see these things peddled about and championed by other people (who also probably don't really know), and figure they're safe, endorsed silver-bullets to their desires/problems.

I am also experiencing crappy battery life after flashing my Captivate to Cognition v2.3b8. I know for a fact that I did not have a full battery when i did the flash. I did the battery calibration but it only helped with the charging percentages being off.

Would it be advisable to flash back to stock, charge battery, (or leave it plugged in the entire time) and reapply Cognition?

Nevermind, I will try the instructions from the ROM forum first:

HOW TO: Reconfigure Battery Stats
When you flash a new ROM it may be necessary to reconfigure your battery stats.
Signs you may need to re configure:
1. . Using more then 10% battery in an hour or less
2. . While plugged into the charger you lock screen shows a different percentage charge then the battery icon
3. . After a full charge your battery icon only shows 99% and quickly drains.
4. . Any general weird battery activity
Step by step battery reconfigure process: (This is the process that has worked for me time and time again with ROM after ROM)
1. . Flash the Rom on a full battery. (skip to step 6)
2. . If you flashed on less then full plug into AC charger asap and charge to full while the phone is powered on
3. . Once the phone blinks full 2.1-battfull popup shows 2.2-battery sign shows on left of notification bar power off
4. . Charge till full while powered off. the phone will vibrate and the green battery will show 100% in white text
5. . Unplug phone and power on.
6. . Using Root Explorer or a comparable program navigate to (Mount R/W first): data>system> and delete file batterystats.bin
7. . Reboot
8. . While the phone reboots it will rebuild that file and the software and phone should now match.
9. . If any of the symptoms persist start at step 2 and repeat.
10. . As with any rechargeable battery fully discharging the battery once in a while isn't a bad idea

Did this help you? I tried doing this trick and my battery stats are still off and battery life sucks (i.e. draining at a rate of like 5% every 5 min)

I've recently installed Cognition 2.3b8 and I tried this step for fixing the battery issue as well as draining the battery completely and also clearing stats through ClockWorkMod but it still seems like my battery is being drained without reason...anyone have a reason for this and/or another fix?

I was getting poor battery performance with 2.3b8 until I started using samservmod to keep comm on edge instead of 3g when I did not need 3g. I do not know why this makes such a big difference for me since I almost always have good 3g coverage.

I'll vouch for the 'dirtiness' of OCLF. There's another huge issue I had with it. After applying, it would stutter playing all my music. And then it would be very fast at first and slow down and slow and slow, and generally get worse and worse. OCLF= bad, bad.
