Compare, contrast, opinions: GSIII vs EVO 4G LTE / Sprint-CDMA-S4 only

Many folks seem to have positive praise for the battery but keep in mind that LTE is not activated on the phones and that will be the true test on how the battery holds up.

I don't think I'll have LTE where I live until 2014 anyway. I'll probably be up for an upgrade by that time.

what i am saying.. is . .there are a lot of people on LTevo.. and do not turn off LTE.. but still get a full day of good usage.

so when these people get LTE signal.. their battery life will even last longer....

I see what you are saying. That is an interesting point.

From what I understand, LTE will use more power than 3g. This will drain your battery faster like Wimax does, even being in a good 4G area. I know that with LTE we will have a better signals. Not like Wimax where we have spotty signals now. So in that sense it will be better on the battery than Wimax. But it will still take more power to run it. This why LTEvo has a bigger battery than the One X I believe. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this.

LTE ought to use more than CDMA, but less than WiMax.

Played with the Evo LTE today and I have to say I really do not like what HTC did with Sense at all. Took me almost a minute to find out how to put on a wallpaper, and I'm no dunce. Another Evo 3D owner (modded on ICS) came in and couldn't find it either. Sense used to be the most user friendly, now it just deletes the best parts of vanilla android and doesn't add enough in return IMO in terms of user friendliness. The menu button and settings menu was a bit annoying as well.

The display model call radios were horrendous, got less the 30 kbps download twice, 17 and 62 kbps upload twice. Market barely worked the speed was so slow. My 3D meanwhile testing at the same time got nearly 300 twice.

It did quadrant 5000+ consistently though and I couldn't get it to lag, so it seems HTC has evened the ground in processors, that thing is beast for a dual core, and with the reports of the great battery life, despite that speed and a really big HD display, I can say that I'm certainly impressed with that.

I really like the looks of the ONE X (especially the white one), but the looks of the Evo LTE seemed too conservative, like they try to make a statement with the back of the phone which I never look at and for me will always be covered with a case.

But for the first time, I will not be an early adopter of an EVO. I will wait for the Samsung this time.

I preordered the S3 just for the heck of it and will compare them myself. I will have 4 days to return the Evo LTE if I decide too or will just send the S3 back.

This is a tempting idea, however I've decided I'm alright with waiting to try the store demo unit.

Don't forget, the 'new phone trial' policy is 14 days now not 30 days. They changed this last summer. So if you are banking on 30 days beware. (you may have other info or a business customer privilege I don't know of) You could always sell the phone you end up deciding against.

I have successfully held out for the S3, and I may hold out even longer for the next iphone.

Why are you guys so certain the HTC radios will be better on sprint? Just curious.

i dont think it has to do with Sprint...

I think HTC radios are better than Samsung radios. we just happen to be on Sprint.

from past phones... Samsung phone on Galaxy S2 and older smartphone models.. have had a lot of issues, when in weak signal areas.
GPS radios have also been issues for many users too.

htc has just been more dependable.

with each no release of a samsung phone.. it is said that the radios have been fix/improved and the issues should be gone. but i have seen too many posts about bad/weak connections and GPS slow/lost...

maybe with the S3.. samsung has really fixed it.

Thanks, I was bummed but I just found that out as I called Sprint to ask a question about my account and mentioned I was thinking of returning the EVO LTE. :(

It's a sad day but I could not wait to compare them like I had wanted and decided to send the EVO back "for now". I already preordered the G3 and will see what that is like and which I prefer. Then keep that or send it back and reorder the EVO LTE. Its not like its real $, only ties it up on my CC for a couple weeks. ;)

I am not a big techie like many here so this and that don't mean a lot to be but every review I see of the S3 calls it the best phone around, phone to beat and all that.

I guess I will see for myself in 3 weeks.

How many times do they allow you to return a phone? I thought they only let you return it once? I hope I'm wrong.

The EVO LTE is already the 3rd one I returned over the last couple years. If you don't like it, you don't like it :D as long as your in the return period. They do ask why you want to return it and things like that.

If you get the same phone again, I think you would have to keep it or they might make returning it harder. I am probably why they reduced the return period to 14 days. Get a new toy, play with it a month then return it is now out. :(

I've read recent articles and it seems the Galaxy S3 is available for preorder (even on Sprint website). I recent acquired my LTEvo last week from Best Buy. I'm certain there are many who are still on the fence between LTEvo, GNexus, and GS3.

The GS3 has 2 GB of RAM and has the S4 cpu.
Would 2 GB of RAM (for GS3) VS LTEvo 1 GB of RAM make that much of a difference?

I have yet to make Sense reload itself unless I intentionally kill a widget process (facebook, stocks, etc.). Of course I had no need to even do that. I can't wait for full root to remove this bloat.

You can easily do one of the soft root methods and then downloand an app like titanium backup to remove the bloat.

I don't think the 2GB of RAM is going to be noticeably better than ours, but I guess only time will tell.

Remember that of our 1 GB ram, only 680 MB is left over for the operating system, Sense, and our apps. It's not nothing, but it's actually less than the 3vo had - so I think that for a sizable number of users, more ram will add up to better performance.

Now - with that said, let's separate the peaches from the cream.

Many are already complaining the multitasking issue our phone and the One X has - that's due to a ram limitation.

But many are not suffering it, and many that are will simply root, replace bloaty components or both on the LTEvo.

But - look at the software stack on the SGS3. Personally, I am not one to throw rocks at the newer TouchWiz - but this latest one is without a doubt a large software stack - and ICS is also a large software stack.

The SGS3 has 2 GB ram because it needs more than 1 GB probably even more than we do.

Were it not for the screen and the camera, I'd trade my LTEvo and take a chance on the SGS3's unknown radios just for the additional ram alone.

I'm really glad to see the competition here, everyone keeps making new phones that for me are always almost just exactly what I wanted.

So, it makes sense to me that the ram differentiator will make a tough choice even tougher. The nice part is that it's a very first world problem to have.

Earlymon to the dark side? Would love to see that one.

And you did say hat if the sgs had 2 gb of ram you would likely give it a try.

Yes, I did and am still discussing it with friends outside the forums. I believe that you will find in the fossil record my ardent support for more ram before Samsung announced it.

When the GNex came along, I was for it, came this >< close to getting one. The Verizon release delay ruined the timing for me though.

Hard to beat this screen though, it's not going to happen with a SAMOLED PenTile, and I also have the future option of running a less memory-thirty rom on the LTEvo.

I expect next year's LTEvo to have 2 GB ram and 800 MHz LTE, and the expanded LTE will probably be key, so in that regard both the LTEvo and SGS3 are possibly just stopgaps at any rate.

Meanwhile, I do enjoy the LTEvo immensely from just a few days use.

Lollers on the dark side. :D

Oh, fwiw, flashing a Samsung is something that I have grown to hate (I help people in RL with that). The whole "flash this rom" to get root is offensive and wrong, but that's definitely just me I guess.

BTW, I am also on record considering the unseen Motorola offering, but after the RAZR HD, that became a non-starter for me.

I know some say this but I have also seen reviews saying it's close to the best screen available. Not as many something or other (my technical jargon :>) as the iPhone but the much larger screen helps it.

I know it has differences in the way colors look or blacks compared to some other screens but some seem to really like it.

I guess its personal preference really.

I was not all that impressed with the evo screen, it does have great viewing angle for an lcd though. I prefer the samoled displays now though, LCD doesnt compare. The unfortunate thing is that the sg3 will not have samoled +, which clearly looks better than samoled to my eyes.

I'm only getting a phonw at all this year because of lte othwise I'd wait a year.

If Sprint LTE is your only reason for jumping into the waters now, it's probably better you wait that year.

Im real interested in the radios now that you guys mention it. I did read that the sIII will have the S4 , but that is all I know, and I don't really know much about any of that stuff.

It's either this Evo, the S3 or I wait for Iphone 5...or some other phone comes out for sprint before then that blows my mind, but I feel that the 3 I just mentioned are pretty much the flagship devices.
