Completely new, need advice about rooting

I wouldn't recommend deleting bloatware. The scripts written in your phone and programs all work together to make your OS run smoothly. I deleted bloatware off my phone and tried rooting and almost bricked my phone. Even though the bloatware takes up memory its not really enough to make a HUGE difference. And as far as the link? I would research rooting as much as you can. There's also some one-click rooting methods which is what I used. And rooting should work with any update.

Rooting makes your phone quicker, gives you the ability to do some major changes in your OS. You can make your CPU run to the max, take screenshots without using SDK tools and a computer, etc;

Ok, i really like the one click option after watching the video. So i need those two apps he mentioned, and where do i find the piece he had on the sd card?

Also, i assume i'll still be able to customize my backgrounds and everything afterwards correct? Does HTC Sense still run after being rooted or how does that work?

Also, if for some reason i wanted to unroot after using this method, is that possible?

There are a few roms out there that run sense ui, Zen Roms, NFX and Fresh

Yes you can unroot;)
 
If I am remember correctly, the one on the SD card is CM6 Rom latest release, that you would download to your SD card

So if i'm going about this correctly, I have to choose a method of rooting (one step/click) a rom (need ideas) and then kernels are some sort of addon? Can someone clarify this for me and suggest good rom and kernels? I've seen cm6, and some other seemingly common ones.

Sounds like you deleted the wrong files. :p Nothing wrong with deleting most/all of the Sprint bloatware at all. There's a thread over on XDA with lists of what's safe to remove via ADB (don't have a link handy, easily found here or on Google).

If you aren't attached to Sense at all, I would highly, highly, highly recommend CM6.

I'd go with the latest one under Stable (9/28/10 #5).
 
Ok,

I'll go with the cm6 for now, and use the app to root my phone. Now i need someone to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do it, what a radio is, and the best way to wipe the phone. As i said, i'm completely new to this.

So, so far i've got:
1. Root
2. Nandroid backup (dunno how) (EDIT: see bottom)
3. Radio (??)
4. Wipe
5. Install ROM (transfer file to sd card???) EDIT
6.......

EDIT: ok i found this guide http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Howto:_Nandroid_Backup to creating backups, can someone confirm that this is correct?

Also for installing the rom, i downloaded the rom manager app. Seems simple enough, i download the rom to my sd card and access it with rom manager. Now for the nandroid backup. Does that backup ALL of my data on my sd card, which i can then transfer to my computer?

nandroid will be installed with the one click root method. its basically an image of exactly how your phone is set up right now. anytime you flash something new, i recommend doing a nandroid backup, just so if something doesnt work right, you can go back to EXACTLY how your phone was before flashing.

As far as wiping the phone, AFTER AFTER AFTER you do a nandroid, from recovery, there will be an option to wipe data. Click it and give the phone a few minutes. once the data is clear, you are ready to flash the rom. Again, in recovery, there will be an option to install a zip from the sd card. click the option and once its done, back at the main menu will be an option to reboot the phone. click it. it is not uncommon for it to take 10-15 minutes to boot initially after flashing a rom, so dont get scared that it froze, its just working.

Ahh, thanks that clears everything up. Unfortunately, when i used the one click root (universal androot) it gave me the "Failed ! No ~~~Fu goo ~~~" Error message. Now this makes no sense to me seeing as i have a hero on 2.1 that it says it works for.... I've searched all over and can't figure out why. I've uninstalled and installed it, and tried the previous versions. Can someone help with this?

So since the one click option doesn't work, is my only option 'unrevoked'?

Have you downloaded rom manager and flashed a clockworkmod recovery?
 
im fairly certain i got clockworkmod in the once click root app. Also, did you do the latest OTA update that came out a few days ago from sprint? Im willing to bet that patched root access, as every other update from them has. Where are you downloading the one click app from? the market or xda-developers.com? i used the one from xda. Just go to the website, scroll down to the SPRINT htc hero and look in the development forum. DONT DO ANYTHING from the gsm version or you will have an expensive paperweight.

*edit - I forgot i bookmarked the link. give this one a shot. just did a phone with it this week, so it definately works up to atleast the .6 update (2.1 update-1)

What does that recovery do? (still too new to this)

Yes i believe i got that new update from sprint. Should i just go back to an earlier version? i have the 2.27.651.5 update on my computer....

The recovery is where you will flash roms, make nandroids, wipe cache....

Once you have a recovery, then you will be good to flash different roms and nandroid

YES, you WILL have to revert back to 2.27.651.5 to root
 
At what point do i do a nandroid when using that one click app? (the latest one). It says to root, then flash to recovery then open the rom of choice, but in other instructions it says root then backup, wipe, then install rom...

Forgive me but I am not too familiar with the one click root, maybe pm chawski, he might have a better answer for you

I am familiar with rom manager though, I can answer those questions
