Help computer no longer recognizes thunderbolt?

it used to work fine but now it says one of the usb devices has malfunctioned.

it shows the drive in my computer but says insert drive when I click on it

I had a similar problem. Every time I plugged into my laptop, it wouldn't bring up the option of how I wanted to connect. I plugged it in to a different computer and it now works fine on my laptop. Sometimes restarting the PC will help as well.
