Help Computer won't recognize Evo through USB

Hey guys,

I have an Evo with the recent HTC update. I plugged it into my computer last night (Windows XP SP2) and it won't recognize the usb device connected. I plugged the phone into a friends laptop (windows 7) and it recognized the phone and let me into the sd card no problem (data cable is OK).

What could be going on? Do I need drivers for the Evo to run on Windows XP.

For the record, I did in fact get the computer to recognize the Evo and SD card back in November and loaded movies to the card (USB port is OK).

Now....won't recognize the device. What am I doing wrong? Thanks guys.

does it show up as an unknown device, or it doesn't show up at all?

have you tried a different usb device in that port to make sure the port isn't bad.

Yep.

You can also try this, plug in the phone, then go to the Device Manager in windows. find where the phone shows up, it may be an Unknown Device, or it may show up as a phone. Either way, right click it, hit uninstall. Then reboot the computer, and plug it in again. This forces windows to reload the drivers for it.

Mr Ed: When connected a small popup comes up on the taskbar at the bottom that says the usb device was not installed and is not recognized. When I goto my computer, it doesn't show up as a removable drive. I will try the new USB port.

Sitlet: Thank you. I will most definately try that as soon as I get home.

I'll update in a few hours. Thanks guys!

I emailed HTC and they got right back to me with a solution that worked! I completely removed all of the components of the HTC Sync that I had originally downloaded. I think it was 2.0. I then downloaded the newer 3.0. I attached the phone via USB cable and it worked. I really like the additional synchronization ability of the newer version!

It worked! I removed the old drivers AND I also plugged into a new USb port.

Sooooo...I don't knowe which one worked but it did. Now Ineed to get my CD drive working again so I can rip my DVD's again. Thanks guys.

Jill: I'll try that too, that sounds cool.

RIGHT CLICK on "My Computer"
Click on Manage.
Click on "Disk Management"
Find your 8GB removeable drive.
RIGHT CLICK and select "change drive letters and paths"
Click Change, and select a drive letter that doesn't conflict with a drive you already have installed (or mapped in my case)
Click OK
You should now be able to see your Drive in windows explorer.:)

Make sure your cable is for DATA and not just for charging, mine had a small label stating that it was for charging and not for data.
