Confirmed: 2.1 WILL require a wipe

Oh ok, yes all my contacts have google next to them. But im not sure if they are synced. I opened my Gmail but cant find where the contacts are located. Now if i dont have them there, how do i sync?

Go to accounts and sync, choose your GMail account, and hit manual sync... or something.

Contacts are located below your labels on the left side of the screen. It kind of blends in with the labels, so it's a little tough to see at first.

Edit: just to be clear, we're talking about gmail.com right?

Seriously, I think Verizon is depending heavily on people having all their contacts as "Google" instead of "Phone" contacts...
The phone and it's OS centers around Google's services. I have to wonder how people use them to much extent (unless they only make and receive phone calls and text) without a Google account. I mean, how do you use the Android Market without a Google account ?

During initial setup, I know it asks you to either login with your Gmail address or create one. Does it have a "Skip" option ? It must.

Remember when it would log you out every time you restarted the phone on v2? It still let you use the phone, it just wasn't logged in.

On the Droid, I think you touch each corner of the screen with your fingers at once and it lets you through without a log in. This is during the initial set up, as far as I know.

Oh boy i just checked and i only got like 18 contacts and they are all emails, nothing from my phone. I dnt see this 'sync' thing anywhere, plz forgive me im blind

Not to be rude, but you are really blind? I see the username, but it's impressive you're typing all this out. Even speaking them, requires a great deal of skill.

If I remember right on 1.5 if they are not Google contacts you have to actually log into Gmail.com and manually add them.

in 1.5 if you go to settings>data sync>google and look down where it says contacts. hit it and your contacts should sync thru your gmail acct.

I think Verizon needs to make an effort to get the word out to their customers. All of us who read the forums know what is coming, but most Eris users don't even know an update is planned. They won't be prepared and they will be FURIOUS when they lose their contacts. Everything else is just a bit of a nuisance - setting the phone back up the way you like it, re-downloading apps and logging back into gmail and Pandora.

I do wish I had saved my bookmarks before loading the last leak. Everything else was fine. I actually liked wiping the phone. Went really fast for a while - like a brand-new phone.

I did the sync thing for the contacts and the calendar, but on the gmail.com its still not there. Or i dnt have worry about it?

I would just recommend making a csv file. Or a vcard. I dunno how to do either, but the phone makes one, puts it on the SD card, and then you just import to Google from the SD card.

did you have "back up assistant" (or whatever it was called) for your old phone? if so, log onto verizonwireless.com and export that list to a file and import it to gmail. the website should be able to tell you how to export and import. i would tell you, but i forgot how to do it.

Why....why....why...do people still make authoritative posts without having any real knowledge?
If for nothing else, think of the kittens.

Cupcake 1.5 already has this feature. I had access to my free Yahoo! account with 1.5. I also had the phone sync'ed to my free Hotmail account. I used it every day to check both accounts.

I took it to mean that you will no longer have to put in manual settings to get imap working for Yahoo! However, the latest v3 said that Yahoo! was now supported and I found no difference. I had to go in there and change the settings manually.

So, backing up before installing OTA: No problem with g-mail, contacts - both in the clouds. Calendar - not so much. Eris is my main calendar. It has never synced with either google calendar or outlook.

Is there an app worth downloading that will reliably back up the calendar before it gets slimed in the OTA? Also, for the leaky folks ;) - has anyone with prior calendar-sync issues on 1.5 noticed an improvement on 2.1v3?

This is my biggest complaint. I've had to re-input calendar entries to a Winmo PDA, which then syncs with Outlook, which then syncs with google.

thanks for any suggestions. I want to get everything in order before the OTA drops (December, probably).

Ok,

Is there a date when they will start pushing it?

Nobody has been given a date but we presume that they are going to induce any day now.

Who....who...who...are you referring to?

I have no problem syncing my Gmail or Calendar, but every time I've tried syncing my contacts it has never succeeded. I've had the phone since November and it still says that was the last time contacts were synced. Anyone have advice? It stays in the constant syncing mode but is never successful.
