Root Confused between sdcard and External sd

When I move my apps they move to sd and not external sd.

Is there a way to move them to /sdcard/_ExternalSD instead?

bought sd card to make room for more apps. 4 gig is super small.

Jesus man, how many apps do you have? I've got over 100 apps and only about 30% full.

What you should do is keep crap like music, photos and videos on your external. Leave internal for apps, backups, game data etc...

Go into the camera, look under settings and pick external SD. Pictures quickly fill space if you keep the highest quality setting.

And one more thing. Join google music. Upload all your mp3s (up to 20,000 free)
Then you don't need to waste space on mp3's on your phone.

That's good advice however I'd still like to be able to move anything I want to external SD. Would titanium backup move apps to external sd?

I also want my backups to go to the real external how do i change the path in tb?

figured that out. I pointed tb to the external sd path. Wondering if there is a way to point apps if necessary Maybe through tb. Amazon has a free app every day sometimes I admit I do keep too many apps.

gotta love the amazon app store. i get the free app everyday.. i dont install all of them.. but if there is a point that i need to use one of them for something, the ability will be there for me to install it for free. once your purchase goes through on the appstore and it starts downloading, and the install dialog opens.. just hit cancel.. or install it to check it out.. but you can always redownload it for free at anytime. also, about apps on the sd.. the best way to do this is with DarkTrems A2SD script.. which isnt available for use on this phone yet.. need recovery and roms..

i used to use link2sd and apps2sd in cm7 on my ascend.

When i was stock i also forced them with titanium. if titanium were able to force an app to sd would it work? might try with a less important app after backing it up and all my other apps. Forcing in this case isn't going to work because as far as I know the path can't be changed for moving.

Why don't you just email the titanium backup dev, ask him to let you pick sd storage location to solve problem A.

For problem B, moving things to real sdcard (wich I totally don't recommend until your internal memory is getting low, otherwise you're just wasting sdcard space).
I could probably do a symbolic link. However, there's no guarantee that would work properly, and it might have consequences.

If you're brave, and if it's even possible:
Code:
plug it into USB
On a windows machine
move .android_secure from /sdcard -> /sdcard_ExternalSD
(each mounts as a different drive in windows, internal and external)
create an empty folder called .android_secure in /sdcard
Unplug it, and wait for it to re-mount

in an android terminal or using adb shell type:
su
mkdir /sdcard/.android_secure
cd /sdcard
ln -s /sdcard/_ExternalSD .android_secure

if it worked, when you type: ls -al
you will see something like this:

drwxr-xr-x  3 kanaida kanaida     4096 2011-08-15 15:40 .android_secure -> /sdcard/_ExternalSD

The little arrow and path at the end let you know. If they're not there it didn't work.

That redirects that folder -> your external one.
I'm not sure if it will work like I said, and I don't see the benefit to doing so but if you want to try knock yourself out.

On another note, don't get too creative making links all over the place in any non-sdcard folders. It can be a real headache later on.

Like you said better to do when out of space. Might contact titanium. Also when someone finally makes a cwm for this phone. Could take more risks playing around if I had a backup image.

Would link2sd work on this phone?

Not sure it would because of the extra internal sd?

Know this doesn't really answer your question but i've read that the internal actually runs faster then even a class 10 sd card so your better off running apps on internal and keeping music, vids, etc on the external..

Yeah it does. Its runs faster then my 8gig class 10

with this phone having 4gb of internal memory, i dont really see a need for A2SD lol, my optm uses A2sd with a 1gb partition and having about 96 apps on my phone at this time.. im only using about 50% of the available space

For some reason, when I go to Camera, then settings, then Storage, it won't let me select SD card :/ its grayed out. I have more than enough space on it. Idk why its like that.

Did you ever put one in? If you never installed one you are using the internal storage. The Esteem does not come with a microsd card.

Hate to see questions without answers - this one definitely not answered.

Open Camera app - point at settings icon, and hold finger there. Wait, and it should give an expanded set of options (this was found by poster, but SD card grayed out). You should see two boxes at the top bar, drag the SD card icon to one of the open boxes. You should now be able to toggle between the memory options.

Too "smart"?

What I've found out is that the internal generally has faster reads and slower writes. My sd (amazon basics class 10 16gb) gets 15-20 on reads/writes. I would rather use my sd card for big apps (such as nova 3 and gta 3) and use my internal for apps like flashlight and rom toolbox.
