Help Confused with modems

Hawker

Android Expert
I've heard some versions of modems work better than others and is regional specific. Is this also carrier-specific?

I dont quite understand how the modem fits in with the ROM and the kernel.
Is the effectiveness of the modem also kernel and ROM specific?

If so, is there a list anywhere of which modems work best with which region/carrier/kernel/rom

Can any version of modem work on any version of firmware? (can a KI4 modem work on KH3 firmware for example)

With this in mind, which modem works best on UK Orange, DlevROM2 KI3, Siyah kernel! :p

I don't really know which are best for which roms etc. But speaking from experience I have found ki3 to be the best. Its given me the best reception on whatever ROM i've been running. I'm in the UK but on 3. I could be wrong here but as for the region specific modems, I think it works the same as firmware so XX will be UK and Europe and NE is Australia.

Some may work better with certain networks, but I've yet to find one that doesn't work at all.

The modem firmware sits between the two and basically controls the radio functions i.e. 2G/3G, wifi, Bluetooth (plus NFC if available).

Not as such. There are dependancies (of sorts) with modules loaded by the kernel, but an error here will affect all modems equally. Case in point.... some months ago a very experienced dev was updating his CM-based kernels for the G2/Desire Z and several releases lost reception on wifi Ch13 because one particular module was specific to the US.

Not that I've found. I spent some time testing different ones but found the differences miniscule. The result is that I used KG6 until I installed DlevROM 2.1.1 last week, which replaced the modem with KI3. I've since gone back to MCR-gr1 which is KG6-based and the KI3 modem appears to perform identically.

See above. I'm finding the KI3 satisfactory.

Im using kg3 (baseband) whilst the firmware is KI3. Can you stick Ki3 over the top without having to reinstall the f/w?

Yes that should be no problem

Cheese I'm confused now.. (well I have clearly understood difference/functions of rom kernel modem..as above ..!!
But what is difference between xx & Ki..??
I know xx are both, firmware & modems..?? Like I'm using darky 10.2.2 EE xxjvq.. So both my modem is xx based and firmware is xx..
So are ki and zg etc firmware to OR are they modems only (does anyone understand where I'm coming from..or am I going insane with all theses different letters) can we distinguish modems from firmware ??

** can I flash ki3 modem zip file on xxjvq firmware ?? **

Basically you can flash any modem regardless of firmware, although it makes sense to use one at least as recent as the firmware.

Look in Settings/About phone. "Build number" is the firmware, "Baseband version" is the modem. Both will have Kxn in the string, where x = a letter and n = a number. This tells you when it was released; letters = months (A=Jan, B=Feb etc) and numbers denote the order of release (1, 2, 3, 4 etc).

@SLUG (anxious jedi to the rescue)... Thanks bud very clear answer..;)

So im on 2.3.4 firmware, baseband xxjvq, darkcore kernel, darky rom..!! (but my modem does not have the letter k in the string..??

so i will have no problems flashing ki3 or zsjpg modems (they will be compatible)..??
As I'm in the UK west midlands im experimenting around with different modems, see which suits me best (mind you current modem xxjvq does decent job) see if ki3 or zsjpg any better..
Lastly what'ss the best of way to find out if a modem is for my region (U.K) any website our links that could be helpful.. (for example I found ki3 modem how/where can I check if its for my region or compatible for phone ..??

Would you mind copying exactly what is listed for baseband, kernel and build number, just so that I can compare them?

KI3 definitely no problem - I've used it myself. The other I'm not clear on.

Your network is probably of more interest. Which one are you with?

Lastly what'ss the best of way to find out if a modem is for my region (U.K)

Afaik all modems for the GT-i9100 S2 are applicable to the UK.

Network 3 (U.K)

Android 2.3.4 firmware
i9000xxjvq baseband
Darkcore 2.9.3 jvq kernel
Darkyrom xxjvq version rom..

So I can use any modem or kernel..??
And I don't need to wipe/factory reset, flashing via odin ..??
I can use semaphore xxjvt kernel > of okay to flash on top..??

That explains everything! Rash, you've got a Galaxy S.... do not flash anything for a Galaxy S2 or you will brick your handset.[/QUOTE

Apologies.. I knew I had sgsi9000 (s1).. But I thought ki3 modem can be used on sgsi9000..??
No worries I will play around with modems & kernels.. (not much)..
Will have to google &.search for list/website for kernels/modems..(will try xda)..do you have any ideas to find modems/kernels...
THANKS
