Help Connecting to PC with USB: nothing happends!?

Lurker
I absolutely cannot get any computer to detect my phone. I've tried it on two different computers running W7 pro. I have no idea how to solve it, there are many threads about this but none describes my problem or has a solution for it. When I plug it into computer on a real full speed fully powered USB port nothing happends. It starts loading that's all. This is after installing the newest Samsung supplied drivers. Sometimes Windows reports an "unknown device" that cannot be installed. Samsung driver files does not contain usual windows driver files so the unknown device cannot be installed automatically. If i disconnect and reconnect device x number of times my phone suddenly shows up as "Samsung Galaxy" unit the internal phone drives are even mounted as the phone is supposed to work always... however after 3 seconds computer makes USB disconnect sound and phone disappears from units and printers list in Windows. Sometimes Phone shows up as MPT device for a few seconds. Sometimes phone doesn't even charge. I am extremely annoyed atm because I switched from iPhone soley because of iTunes - a Smart Phone has ABSOLUTELY no use for a management software because all computers already has these functions built in and they work fantastically if supported correctly. A basic file manager are generations ahead of Kies and is way more flexible. Imho devs of Kies should be tried for crimes against humanity. Its even worse than iTunes and thats quite an accomplishment. I've used Kies air but thats slower than a dead person in a wheelchair since you usually transfer GBs of data - so its absolutely not an option. I am ofcourse only using original Samsung cables. I am amazed how Samsung could managed to so royaly f**k something basic up so horribly - Considering that the PC USB connection functionality is well covered and honed to perfection by Android. Still Samsung managed to take that, crap all over it and sell it to their customers.

I used to have this problem with my HTC desire on my work computer. Sometimes it would not recognise the device at all, then sometimes it would. I could never get it to work properly even when it was recognised. Now with my GS2 its a lot better but still not perfect. Sometimes I have to swap usb ports, reboot the computer for it to work. I dont think this is a samsung problem. For me it is either a usb port problem or windows, I've given up trying to figure it out now. Both phones connect fine on my laptop.

Sometimes you need to have usb debugging enabled, this should be in settings> applications> development

It's been covered before.

Once the pc detects the phone you'll get (at least on 2.2) an image of an android with a usb arm with the button below it to mount the phones sd card. The droid should turn orange and your pc should get the new drive autoplay window up.

Which USB cable are you using? It needs to be the USB cable that is non-symmetrical at the end which goes into the phone, I think this is also the only one of the 2 in the box that has the trident/USB mark on it.

My Vista x64 PC detected the phone, but it was unable to find all the correct drivers for it online - it wasn't until I installed the Samsung Kies desktop application (which included device drivers) that the phone could connect properly.
If you haven't already done so, perhaps it's worth trying to install Kies before connecting the phone. Although it does sound like your problem has a different source.

Its definately not a Windows problem. The issue is with Samsung not able to release a driver that works for everyone. I seriously doubt theyve tested their drivers on every kind of modern Windows solution.

They phone works randomly when connected, but in 95% of case nothing happends except that it starts charging. This is the case with all computers Ive tried.

USB-debugging is not a solution; the phone is not detected at all no matter what mode phone is in.

So no, its not been covered before. Ive found no solution.

Read my post again, Ive already written that I am using the original Samsung USB-cable :P

Ive installed Kies and run the "install driver" thing from menu + rebooted a zillion times. It doesnt work.

If you are talking about connecting the phone as mass storage, then go to

Applications - Settings - Wireless and Network - USB utilities and then tap on connect storage to PC and then connect your USB cord. It should detect :)

If you're working with KIES, then just connect the cord and KIES desktop suite starts!

Hope this helps.

USB Utilities is not applicable. The phone is not detected. It doesnt even start charging at times (I have to reboot phone when that happends, its not an issue with the cable because it works perfectly when connected to a wall jack with a charger adapter, and neither is it Windows fault... same stuff on numerous computers). Because its not detected then USB Utilities of course doesnt work.

Ive also already written that I dont want to use Kies because its a piece of shit software that not even the devs mothers would be proud of. Still, Ive tried using Kies anyway and it doesnt do anything.

I dont want to seem ungrateful but its kinda annoying when Captain Obvious tries to save the day every time... Thanks for the effort thou. :)

Have you tried using a proper computer (ie Linux or Mac)? That might really tell you whether it's Windows' fault or not. Trying several Windows computers won't tell that.

Hmm, I'm not sure that slagging off people trying to help is a great way to get any more help .

I had the Android show up when I was half way through rooting and once Id reflashed the Stock samsung kernal Kies recognised my phone once more. I cant say ive ever had my pc not recognize the phone at all however.

Neither is starting flame wars :-) FYI I borrowed a friends hide-poor-hardware-and-performance-with-design-ridduculous-pricetag-computer (Apple) and it didnt detect my phone.

The basic idea with replying to a post is to bring fourth information that hasn't been covered yet. So of course I expect people to read before replying information :-) Thanks for the input.

Ivy been thinking about flashing or reset to factory defaults but to Di that I need to backup and to do that I need USB :-) Catch 22, yeeeey!

And Android Forums expects its members to treat each other with common courtesy, especially those giving of their own time to help others. I suggest that you drop the attitude if you want help.

As to your issue, if the handset is not detected by any computer when connected via the USB cable then either it or the cable is likely defective. No drivers are required for basic USB functionality - it should be recognised as a removeable device (or two) as soon as it's connected.

What venison of Kies are you running. You need the latest for it to recognize your phone but the USB should work no matter what if it is enabled on your device.

I had all the same issues as mentioned. Running Vista 32bit, the phone simply wasn't being recognised.

  • Tried enabling USB Debugging... Nothing.

  • Tried Applications - Settings - Wireless and Network - USB utilities and then tap on connect storage to PC and then connect your USB cord. Nothing. All I got was an error telling me to remove the USB cable WT?!?
I plugged my phone into a different USB port and Viola!

Everything started working as expected!

:)

NOTE : I had been plugging it into a powered USB hub (which every other USB device of mine was working flawlesslywith) and simply couldn't get the phone recognised. Then I plugged it into one of the front USB ports on my Antec 900 amd Bingo!

Thanks for sharing. I did exactly that also but in my case that didnt help. However I also have alot of other problems that have led me to believe I have a broken unit, etc:

  • Bluetooth cannot activate (Icon starts activating for 30 something seconds then goes inactive again).
  • Calls are shut off at random, especially when data reception is poor and phone is switching between GPRS/Edge/HDSP.
  • Battery sometimes drains during only a few hours w/o using unit.

So Ive decided to send in my unit and have it replaced. Ill report back if this fixes it :P

Thks. After reading so many ' solutions ' yours was the easiest for a non tech savvy person like me. And Viola! it works. Thks so much

Thanks for the many users who provided the answers to this problem. I found myself in a little bit of a fix after rooting my sgs2 and installing siyah 2.4.2, the laptop couldnt recognise my phone. Looked up problem here and realised that I needed to switch off the USB debugging after the install. DOH! and problem solved.

Just started to fumble my way in this area and this is a great forum to guide you the process of rooting, problems and source of input.

Thanks guys and keep up the good work

Panic over

Had similar problems with this over several months but finally found out what was happening. It seems the PC 'remembers' the initial port when I first connected the Phone, so try different ports! I was constantly re-arranging my hubs etc thinking it wouldn't affect anything (caused major problems with printer connection too!

(this part I cant explain) but it worked for me.
Once I found a usb port that worked it works ONLY if you re-insert the cable from the computer end and not the end that plugs into the phone! Wierd but true - for me anyhow, see how you go :)

That's what you're supposed to do lol. :D

i found a solution.. its the sd card that was never installed.. you dont need to download bunch of crap.. you just need to buy an sd card..i bought it for my gs2 and now its working perfectly
