Root Considering Rooting for the 1st time...have novice questions

Hi,
Since Jelly Bean will probably be the last official upgrade for the Bionic, I am considering rooting for the 1st time.

One reason I may root is, I use Tasker, and Tasker can't KILL an app unless rooted.

What other benefits are there to rooting?

AND, most importantly, how do I root WITHOUT screwing up my phone? This is new to me.

I use it to get rid of all ads. You have to search the web for apps now because they are not in the Play Store anymore, I use AdAway. You can freeze bloatware apps or delete them, both with Titanium Back up(freezing is safer). Use wifi tether for free even if you're grandfathered with unlimited data. Some of why I root. You can install other ROMs if you want.
