Help Constant Slow Mobile Data?

Go SMS, pinger, text plus, do use the data connection to communicate. I went through a bunch of those type of apps looking to see just that.

Also if you go into the, testing menu through the dailer where you can change the network from gsm, cdma, etc when you switch between them it can delay the texts. Couldn't tell you specifically what happens. But I've noticed it happen. Granted maybe it's during the switch that the text gets lost or whatever you want to call it. But I was fooling with it last night then again this morning and had a text I missed from the night before come through.

I've also shut of the data radio to the phone and still have texts t through the native app come through.
Maybe somebody more knowledgeable can explain exactly what happens, but it does. That's how the post paid carriers can give away free text and voice but nickle and dime ya on the data.
I thought that's what I said...lol:what:

I've flashed a few dozen prl's on my Elite and noticed a significant difference between many of them. On some my connection would be almost non-existent, others it was noticeably better than 61007, which was the prl my phone came with. I'm in Eastern Los Angeles County and I found 60680 and 60660 to have the fastest, most consistent data connection. i've attached a zip with all the prl's that I've come across.

Is there any way to narrow them down for example for people living in Northern IL or do they all cover the whole country?

I don't know about that. You can search around on the xda forums or google. I can't say if it will help or why; but I flashed around 34 prls over a period of a week and definitely noticed a difference in 3g and voice connectivity, and variating 3g speeds when measured with the Speedtest.net app.

Mine is 61009 I've only had my phone a couple months though. I am actually having some call issues now, everyone's voice sounds robotic but they hear me fine. I am trying to figure out if something is wrong with my speaker or if it is sprint again.

I called to complain and the rep said there is a tower upgrade in my area. If I drive a few miles down the road voice is fine so hopefully they are actually doing something. At my house it is obvious something is wrong because apps like the weather channel are showing me as being in the next town over. If I drive to where the voice is fine though it correctly shows my hometown.

This data connection problem is driving me nuts. I used multiple Optimus V's and the 3G was always rock solid using mrg666's CM7. It's making Google Music while driving almost unusable. Between this and a barely there ROM community, I might start looking at other phones and carriers.

This phone is driving me nuts with the data issues, I agree with that.
The development community here for the Elite is real stellar though, I don't want to leave it behind.

They are lying. This is their go-to answer when they don't know what they're doing. I had them tell me this and "call back in 3 days". And repeated that every 3 days for a couple months, until I dumped them.

Agreed. I've actually figured out a little trick to keep 3G connected..... aka a quick trick to reconnect. OK so we all know as soon as the phone connects to 3G , and while we're actually using it, the 3g stays locked. But, as soon as you let it stop, within about 45 seconds the antenna will reset and drop to 2g. So as soon as that happens, call your voicemail, let it ring and hangup. The 3g will reconnect. I only say dial voice mail because there's a voicemail app you can throw on the home screen that when you click Calls it automatically. This method is more effective than airplane mode for some reason.

I never had this happen. 3g (if it would even connect to it) would drop to 1x even while using it. One day I forgot my lunch and decided to order Chipotle online and pickup. It took me something like 20 minutes to place the order and 40% of my battery because as soon as the page would almost finish loading it would drop to 1x and I'd have to log in again. And start the order over.

One thing no one mentioned: ANY android device (at least running gingerbread and without 4g, I haven't played around enough with other ones) will drop down from 3G to a 1xRTT connection when you receive a phone call or a text message. Apparently Google or the carriers thinks that all of the 3G data networks are incompatible with calls and text messages. Yes, it's irritating, but hey. Also, if you go digging through the all things root forum, there's a way to lock the phone into a certain network connection type via the hidden menu. (no it doesn't require root, it's just posted there. I'll find it for y'all)

I didn't find the post, but google is amazing and I remembered the settings. if you open the phone app and type in "*#*#4636#*#*", it will automagically open up the hidden menu. from there, you click on 'phone information' and scroll down to where it says 'set preferred network type'. If you change the setting to CDMA, it will lock it down and stabilize it into 1xRTT, if you select EvDO, it will lock it into CDMA rev. A. However, because of the issues with the operating system itself mentioned above^, it won't receive texts. in the EvDO mode, I got 468 kb/s down and 268 kb/s up, in CDMA mode I got 66 kb/s down and 146 kb/s up (????). Choice is yours.

well I don't see why it would have worked fine until now unless they were doing something like that. Will be interesting to see if I get the credit they promised.

Thanks for this tip. I hope that it will help some. Personally, my experience has been more on par with that of MacFett. I rarely maintain a stable connection regardless of what my phone is doing.
The only trick I have discovered, and I don't know if others are already aware of this, is that maintaining a WIFI hotspot, by way of Barnacle or another tethering app, will keep the 3G stable for the most part while it is running. This depletes the battery pretty quickly however.

Yes, it's *#*#4636#*#*.
Here is the thread mentioned: http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-elite/649000-mobile-data-troubleshooting-steps.html
Also, the menu can be accessed quickly with the programs Network: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwyLDEsImRlLm1hbmdlbG93Lm5ldHdvcmsiXQ

If you get a text it will kick you to 1x and keep you there?

A few months ago I took a road trip and was using Google music, the one that streams your music. Half way through the trip I got a text and around that time Google music couldn't keep up anymore and kept buffering. I thought it was because I was going through an area with bad coverage but now I'm wondering if it put me on 1x.

If you 4636 and switch to edvo you will be unable to receive texts?

Also, interestingly, I don't know if anybody else ever picked up on this, but in resetting the phone by way of the ##VIRGIN## method and setting the values to 1111111111, and just leaving them that way, my experience has shown a solid 3G connection. However, SMS and voice is unavailable, naturally.
This leads one to believe that there is some sort of deprioritized affinity for Elite owners on Virgin's end.. Or something.
For what it's worth, trying some different PRLs has helped my data connection somewhat.

They have some BS Policy in place. They only credit your account after the issue is resolved. They never fixed my issue. And I wasn't going to tell them it was fixed when it really wasn't. So they never credited me anything.

Perhaps this is relevant to the connectivity problems we experience.
Does anyone know if there is a system menu to disable SMS/MMS but keep 3G data network alive.
Personally, I use Google Voice for the majority of my texting, so I could disable most texts from coming through fairly easily for troubleshooting.

an update to my voice issues. Quality is still terrible so I called again to complain and the rep said the tower upgrade is complete. She reset my service from their end and that made no difference so the next step is to send me a replacement phone. Considering voice quality is fine when I drive a few miles from my house I highly doubt there is anything wrong with the device itself.

I had the same problem with one PRL that I flashed. Given that you are not far from where I am geographically, maybe changing the PRL will help...
VM just sent me an email that my next replacement Elite is on the way.
I hope that I can get this one working satisfactorily, as I like the community and the phone (other than the data problems).
If not, I am going to pick up an older second-hand phone for my grandfathered plan.

First I was told it was a tower upgrade, then I had to call back multiple times and have them "reset" my service, finally today I have a replacement on the way. If the replacement is the same I will know it is their service however the phone worked fine since the middle of January so I don't see why that would have changed. If the replacement fixes it I guess the phone went wrong possibly due to having it overclocked on one of the custom roms or something. If they really screwed their coverage here in the short time I've had the phone I'll probably have to switch to another carrier even if it means paying 15 to 20 dollars more a month.

I received a replacement Elite yesterday. This is my third one. I got some crazy errors when trying to swap online. It wouldn't swap with the automated phone system. The rep told me it had a bad ESN. The trouble ticket has been escalated. We'll see what happens with that.
Anyway, I just won a used Optimus V on eBay, so I will be switching to that at some point.
By the way, the 61676 PRL that I was using seemed to be providing a bit more stable and consistent (but slowish) 3G data than before.
Let me know if you need PRLs. I've amassed a collection.

I think the reason they're so generous with their replacements is they just keep recycling the phones people send in without spending much time trying to figure out what went wrong with them. It seems like getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot at best.
