Help Contacts Question

Rickardo

Newbie
Looking at my number of contacts it said that I have 676 but I have nowhere near that many so when I looked at each contact under "edit contact" there are 6 versions of the same info in there ????????????

How do I get rid of all the multiple copies under each contact and just have the original info

Thanks in advance

If you are using HTC Sense you can press the menu button when in contacts then view.
You can hide all the other types of contacts so they don't show.

If you have multiple copies, are the google contacts? Check in gmail on a pc if you have multiple copies. If you have, clean it up.

If I clean up and remove contacts in gmail will they automatically be removed on my phone?

Yes - if they are Google contacts. Bit spooky doing something on the PC then it corrects the phone. This is the advantage of the cloud! Just try it.

Spookily handy. I spent half an hour yesterday cleaning up, making groups, merging duplicates etc in Google Contacts and I'm very happy with the setup now.

Except, that is, after I upgraded my ROM and restored contacts using Mybackup- it got rid of the groups I had made. The groups are gone from the cloud too so I have to make them again.

Is there any way I can avoid this mistake in the future?

Once you have your google contacts stored in gmail, you won't need to back them up in mybackup again. If you ever wipe data and install a new rom they'll be synced when you put in your google account.

They are in the cloud, they will automatically come back to your device when you put in your google account.

Restoring them likely means you'll have 2 of every contact now (could this explain the original problem?)

Wherever you make a change (gmail / android) that latest change is seen as the version you want and the other is overwritten with that change.

So if your groups were on gmail and not mybackup, you overwrite android which in turn, overwrites gmail.

I made the groups in gmail several hours before mybackup and had checked that they had synced down to the phone. Mybackup restored the other changes I had made just not the groups.

It's good to know about the syncing process. I'll just make sure gmail has the latest changes and avoid using MBU for contacts.
