Root Controversy on various roms

For those who care, I've already modified the leak into a custom ROM. It's on XDA (uploading now, or would provide the link). Also posting it in the ROMs subforum here.

So I am by no means familiar with custom ROMs or how you go about flashing a new ROM... but if I flash this custom ROM on my Incredible, will I be able to ever get the official release when Verizon starts distributing? Or will I have to revert to stock to then get the custom one?

I'll be releasing one based on the official release. And I have a pretty good track record. My GB ROM is out mere hours after the leak occured.

my inintnal reaction is nice but it is NO where near fully functional... it is very basic GB with the 3.0 port the screen resolutions are off on some of the elements and some of the widgets are not fully integrated yet
but it is still very sleak and sexy
give it a week or two and we should have a full gingersence rom

Now, I'm completely psyched about my phone again. I had moved all my Android fanboyism to my tablet. I'm now highly anticipating the GB. I see a few Alpha ROMS floating around. Can't work up the courage to try them out quite yet.

i have only tried that one and man the 3.0 is sexy man

The screen shots look amazing. I'm still gonna wait until it hits daily driver phase before trying it out. I never really saw the point in trying alpha builds of ROMs. You know it's not going to work well enough for daily use so you'll have to switch back to something else. I just never saw the point.

The alpha that was out was working pretty well for me, granted maps wouldn't load, and I had to use Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher, but everything else was good. If I didn't use maps so much, it could have been my DD. The main thing I wanted from it was the new camera. The one on sense 1.0 takes too long to snap the picture. Sense 2.0 has a better one, but I always get random reboots with any of the Z ROMs I try.

I tried them all I was loving the 3.0 but they are all so unstable right now to use as a daily rom so I am back on cm7 nightlies

I was concerned about that until I flashed OMGB. Now I couldn't care less if they ever officially release GB for the INC. Right now I have a streamlined GB rom, whereas the one from Verizon will be bloated out the yin-yang.

If it's like the last two updates, your phone will download the update and prompt you to run the update. Attempting to run the update will cause your phone to reboot without applying the update. You will be nagged to update your phone every 30 minutes.

In order to avoid this, you have a few options. You can either unroot your phone, and hope that someone can re-root the new update. Or, you can switch to a custom ROM based on the new update (see my sig, the final version should be out within 24 hours of the actual update hitting). Lastly, you can just use ADB to change the build prop's number so that it matches the new update, but that just leaves you on the now current version without a nagging prompt.
I am in the same situation as MetroSquard - rooted but not using custom ROM, just moved some bloatware in the different folder (so that it won't start when phone boots) and use several apps that rely on being rooted.

Can you clarify why exactly OTA would fail to update? Just because phone is rooted or because some files from previous stock ROM cannot be found?

I just wanted the plain jane vanilla GB, and that is what OMGB is.
I tried CM7 before I tried OMGB. I prefer OMGB.

i would say try evervolve or when the new sky rider comes out try that

I have tried SR_4.0 and it had some things going for it, but overall I have been happiest with OMGB. I don't care if they do any more updates because the one I have is flawless. I don't want a ROM someone else has customized to their liking. I want a clean slate that I can customize to my liking. That's what OMGB is.

I can't blame you for wanting that. ... I just can't support that developer because of the things he has done to the development community but that's a story for another day

If you like there is a member Medion who has a stock gb rom from the vzw leak that may be to your liking as well

I don't know anything about that. I'm pretty new to the Incredible community. Or even the Android community for that matter. My bro-in-law gave me his old Eris back in January, and I used it for a couple of months, and rooted and rommed it. Then I upgraded to the Thunderbolt, and had some issues with it, so I bought a used Incredible on eBay, and here I am. I have really been happy with my Incredible for the most part, but I've been the most happy since I installed OMGB a couple weeks ago.

But for what it's worth, I'm not supporting him either. Just using his awesome rom.

Lol that's still supporting him hahah

To me supporting him is sending him money to further his efforts. I am benefiting from his work, but I'm not supporting him. If I had paid for my copy of OMGB, then maybe then I would supporting him.

Anyway, I don't know what he did, and I don't really care at this point.
I read his thread about OMGB over at XDA and everyone in that thread seemed glad to have him back. So whatever happened before, apparently it's water under the bridge for most people.

Maybe you can PM me and tell me what happened, so I am not ignorant of the issue. Thanks.

I'll give you an example, being a half-assed ROM developer myself. Once in awhile, a user of my ROMs posts in the XDA thread either a question or a thanks of some sort. When this occurs, the thread goes back to the top of the forum. While at the top of the forum, I see a temporary spike in downloads and sometimes donations.

Other times I'll see a member recommend or discuss my ROM in a thread, which often leads to that person researching my ROM, then posting in my thread, and see above.

So by using a ROM and even discussing it, you're supporting it in ways that you could never even imagine. I'm not saying that it's wrong to use that ROM. From what I hear, it's an amazing ROM. I don't know exactly what he did to the developer community either, but from reading his webpage, it seems that he sees it as a badge of honor that he and his team have been banned from various developer and Android communities.

That makes sense.
I won't argue that I'm not supporting him anymore (or at the very least, inadvertantly encouraging others to support him.)

But, since I have no idea what he did, I don't have any reason to not support him. So I don't have any reason to not support him, and since I am in fact incredibly impressed with one of his roms, I actually have reasons to support him.

So I guess what I'm saying is this.

His rom kicks major butt, and I am happier and more impressed with it, than any other I've tried, including CM7. That is a big compliment, even from a newb like myself.

He may be a wonderful human being, or a real jerk. I don't know and frankly I don't care.

I never said he was a great person. I just said his rom rocks, and it does.
And if that rom can make my experience with my droid incredible that much more satisfying, then you better believe I'm gonna use it.

You know one of the reasons I was turned off by CM7? It had a practically pornographic picture as one of the wallpapers. To me that is a reason to not support them, based on my values. But if I am not mistaken, no gingerbread roms would be out there if it were not for the work done by that team. So really I am in a roundabout way supporting the Cyanogen Mod team by downloading OMGB.

I kinda view this like I do the music industry.
Just because I think a musician is a real piece of crap as a person, that doesn't stop me from listening to their music, if it's good.

The product is all I care about, not the producer.
Maybe that is shallow or even selfish, but that's how I feel.
I am not willing to deny myself the use of a rom that has taken my Incredible experience all the way from frustrating to overjoyed, just because someone says the developer did some stuff that wasn't nice way back when.
