Wow. Well, exactly what happens when you connect the Ally. Do either the Ally or the PC do anything at all? If not, you can use the same cable to connect to a Windows XP PC without any problems at all?
If the above are true, it almost sounds like a USB driver issue. What brand is the PC? Perhaps you could check and see if they list drivers for it on their support site, so you could download and re-install the USB drivers. (Long shot, I know - but at this point desperate moves may be the only ones you have left).
If you have any other USB devices you could try plugging one into her PC to see if that one also fails to connect. If that happens, it is certainly something going on inside the PC that is the problem.
BTW, does she shut the PC down every night and reboot it the next day, or does she leave it run for days at a time? (I prefer the former - all versions of windows "rot" as time progresses. )
Also, is her PC current with all the latest Windows Updates?
