Help CPW branded handsets and ICS

Ohh so either CPW doesn't mean CarPhoneWarehouse in this case it just happens to be what the FW is called or loads of handsets for CPW are being sold elsewhere?? To be honest I have no clue why CPW would have branded FW cos they are not a carrier.

Carphone warehouse is really big, maybe they just supply smaller chains like phones4u or smaller network stores in some towns.

Has any one heard if CPW are anywhere near releasing an ICS release or indeed if they have a good track record of quickly releasing firmware updates. Out of curiosity i had a look at Samfirmware site and they only have one CPW firmware update listed for SG2 and that was dated May 2011.

"Samsung UK is working hard to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our Galaxy S II customers. We are unable to confirm exact dates as the software testing and approval process is subject to several variables, but we are working as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience."

Samsung's motto is "lol @ deadlines" :p

Exactly, I can't understand it! Why would CPW have their own software that is EXACTLY the same as the usual unbranded software? Makes no sense at all - are we sure its a Carphone Warehouse software and not just version number "CPW" and its a coincidence that CPW stands for Carphone Warehouse?

I've bought a SIM free S2 from Amazon (sold by Amazon) but the CSC is I9100CPWKH1.

Does that mean my phone is actually from Carphone Warehouse? Will this cause me any issues?

I've had an S2 delivered today from Tesco Mobile Shop with an O2 sim, this has CPW firmware and is unlocked, which was a surprise!

How odd. What going on? So does this mean we're waiting for the ICS update from Samsung, O2 or Carphone Warehouse??

mine is cpw too who do i wait for the upgrade? o2 samsung? etc?

Yes I would like a definitive answer on this too. I bought my phone from Carphonewarehouse and it is a CPW firmware. That said there is far and away too much confusion here - so can we really say that "CPW" means carphonewarehouse - are we 100% certain? I don't want to fall out with anyone on here but too many different scenarios as to where phones originate from with CPW firmware, for them all to be from carphonewarehouse.

It means carphone warehouse. Slug stated that Samsung uk themselves have said this.

so what? we have to wait for the carphone warehouse to provide an update? the carphone warehouse who are just a shop who sell phones? what damn right do they have to brand phones to themselves.

do they offer a cpw network with minutes texts and data? no they dont so who do they think they are conning us public into purchasing a high end phone and in reality were getting scammed by the fact that our phones are never gonna get updated with "their" software.

Calm down mate, its just a phone.
If you cant wait for CPW to release their own update do what i have and install one that is already availible, albeit for another network. You can always reflash the CPW one when it is released but in the mean time you can have a play with ICS while your waiting.

Firstly, you buy a phone as-is. You're entitled to support for the phone, but you're not entitled to software updates unless there's a major bug that stops a major feature of the device from working. Therefore CPW can withhold the update for as long as they want - however annoying it is.

Secondly, if you'd care to read the thread, somebody said earlier that the CPW firmwares are released at the same time as the unbranded ones. In case you haven't noticed, Samsung haven't even released the unbranded update yet.

Thirdly, what on earth makes you think that only networks have the right to modify the software?

I emailed Carphone Warehouse yesterday regarding the upgrade for CPW devices and got this response:

Thank you for your email

The software upgrade to 4.0 is available to customers who purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 from ourselves as it is unlocked. It has been available with O2 as of 28th March.

You will need to download the latest Kies Air drivers onto your home computer or laptop for the 4.0 upgrade to work, and follow the on screen instructions given.

If you are struggling to complete this, I would advise you pop into one of our Carphone Warehouse stores. alternatively you can always call our Geek Squad team for 24/7 technical support on 0800 049 6190 . Please note this is a chargeable service, unless you already have a Geek Squad insurance policy.

If there is anything else I can do for you please do not hesitate to click reply, or call our dedicated customer services team on 0870 087 0870 .We are open Monday to Friday 8am till 9pm, Saturday 9am till 6pm and Sunday 11am till 5pm.

I've tried to update this morning but nothing available still.

This is funny for a number of reasons! :D

1. Kies Air is NOT a driver.
2. Kies Air can NOT be installed onto a computer, it is an android app!!!
3. You can't upgrade your firmware through Kies Air anyway, you need to have a USB connection to do it!!!

Lol.

OK people for you CPW SG2S's - I have just plugged my phone into my PC to see what Kies has to say as I've just read (I work shifts and have just got home today from a very early 5am start) various things regarding XEU non-branded firmware in the ICS-guise.

Expecting that CPW owners would be the last to get ICS I was rather shocked to find that Kies says the following about my phone in a pop-up window: -

New Firmware Available - Current - PDA: KI4 / Phone: KI1 / CSC KH1 CPW
- New - PDA: LP7 / Phone: LPS / CSC LP5 CPW

WooHoo :) :) :) but having spent an eternity getting my phone to it's present state and it works impecably, I would like to learn from others, who have CPW firmware, whether they have had sucess updating without doing a Factory reset or Devlik Cache wipe etc etc. I had originally rooted my phone by CF-Root v 4.2 but then, in order to get SkyGo working, had to flash the Stock Kernal. This has had the efeect of preserving my Root but I have lost the ability to backup using either CWM or Rom Manager. The Rom is Stock - I have never touched it from new.

Cannot see anything obvious on the Forum and there is even a CPW thread somewhere - I thought it best to post here.

Anyone?

Upgrading my CPW S2 now. Will be sure to report back, especially if it goes wrong in any way... :o Fingers crossed though!
