CPW branded S2 2.3.5 firmware

GloryHornet

Lurker
Has anybody with a CPW branded (CSC) Galaxy S2 got the 2.3.5 firmware update yet.
I have contacted them and a month after all other carriers in the uk rolled it out they still haven't and they don't seem to have any clue about it.

I was facing the something with Bell Canada that has not pushed out a single update. I just updated threw Ordin and am very happy with 2.3.6. I was not happy about having to go threw something other than KIES but am very happy and it was so easy to do and I did not have to Root.

Had a reply from Carphone Warehouse

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, we would not be able to provide you with a date of when the firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 will be available, as we have not received any communication regarding this.

I can confirm once the firmware update is available you will be notified accordingly.

They havent got a bloody clue!

Wish I had gone to the Orange shop now they seem to be one of the first to roll out newer firmware.

Bit reluctant to go down the Odin root due to warranty issues.

I thought CPW phones were unbranded/unlocked, my last one was from there. I wasn't aware they had any branding on their phones at all.

I have a cpw S2. They are unbranded and unbranded phones haven't received the 2.3.5 update yet. Apparently the firmware is being tested and should be released "shortly".

I've also got CPW S2 and i'm still on 2.3.4.

Really hope they skip the updates and go straight for ICS.

the diff between 234 and 235 IMHO is purely cosmetic (blue bounce and vibrate icon). battery life on both was the same for me, but obviously better than 233. I'd wait for ICS or get CheckROM Revolution v4.

Hi. I've been reading around on this topic and it's not remotely clear, but it does appear that CPW firmware is updated separately to the network provider. So if you have a CPW phone it doesn't matter whether you are on Three or Vodafone, you will get whatever CPW have available for your model of phone. For instance I'm on Vodafone (from CPW) and Kies insists 2.3.3 is the latest available, despite Vodafone offering 2.3.5.

Could anyone confirm this?

I upgraded to 2.3.6 last monday on a uk unbranded phone. Since then I have had issues with battery drain.
Still researching but so far quite a few others have posted battery issues with 2.3.6.

Check sammobile - then have a list of official firmwares to install.

They only have one older CPW on there for my device not sure about S2. But I am primarily interested in official rom without rooting.

Mines not rooted and I installed the latest fw using odin (very easily) from either xda or samfirmware and it improved battery life on mine no end.

baseband version is i9100xxki3
Build gingerbread.xwkk5

That's cool, and I appreciate that these things can be circumvented with relative ease, however it doesn't answer the question about what the latest CPW firmware is, how to find out (customer service are apparently clueless) and if it's available officially. Odin isn't 'official' and for some people (not necessarily me) that's a problem.

and so you/they have to stay on whatever the version is the CPW are currently running which i guess is 2.3.4/5.

You're correct. Handsets are identified by their s/n or device id #, and manufacturers have a record of which network these originally belonged to. CPW can be considered a 'network' in this case because, like actual carriers, their handsets have a unique firmware. So no matter what mobile network the device is used on, updates will depend on the original firmware installed.

I hope that makes sense? :o

I have a CPW sourced S2 and am on Vodafone. I've only ever updated it via Kies and am on 2.3.4 so I'd assume that would be the latest firmware for the UK CPW phones.

2.3.4 is what I have here so I expect that's the latest on CPW.

lets just hope they are doing lots of work to roll out ICS for us, other wise I think a lot of us will be going for odin!

Well yes. Unless you use Odin.

It makes perfect sense. Thankyou! ;)

When did you update? I last checked about 6 days ago (before uninstalling Kies completely-good God it's a heavy/crap program) and there was nothing there for my Ace.

Good to know I'm not the only one p***Ed off with this, I'm on a cpw purchased off line s2 running on 2.3.4. First annoying thing for me is why the hell have I got branding on a

Me too! I love my phone and after reading all about what can be done with it, I have decided to stay as close to stock as I can. I have rooted it though and now eagerly await an upgrade via Kies soon.

That said 2.3.4 seems to work perfectly for me (apart from one slight issue which I have raised in another thread) so this is not a biggie for me.

When I had Nokia phones though, the UK always received firmware upgrades faster than the rest of the world. Samsung UK it seems are just not as fast as the rest of the world in our case!

Samsung aren't the issue, it's the providers. 3 are pretty quick, relative to the rest of the world, but CPW appear to be one of the slowest, if they even bother at all.

Is there any way to switch to our actual provider?

For example, i'm on o2, is there a way to flash from CPW to the o2 firmware and recieve their updates? Or is it engrained within the phone?

Yeah. D.Load Odin and Flash O2 firmware. ;)

But if you're going to do it, you have to really want to do it, and if you really want to do it you can find answers about the process here and on XDA pretty easily. Loads of useful guides.

About a month ago I was advised that as CPW is not a "Air Time Provider", unlike Vodafone, O2, Orange etc, that the problem lies with Samsung UK for users buying their phones from CPW. Samsung UK is lagging behind the rest of the world - or is my information incorrect?

Just a bit confused now

Spoke to my bro today who works in cpw and he said pretty much the same thing, cpw aren't at liberty to go altering individual firmwares and that it's probably a separate agreement that Samsung release it this way, pretty disgraceful really and think we need to start doing a bit of Samsung arm twisting! Please correct me if I'm wrong on this though.

Just as another data point, mine came from Carphone Warehouse, has only been updated through Kies - is on v2.3.4 - and currently has [according to *#1234#]:
PDA I9100XWKI4
PHONE I9100XXKI1
CSC I9100XEUKH2
Build info Wed Sep 14 20:34:11 KST 2011

So, I guess not all handsets from CPW come with a CPW CSC.
