creating custom bootscreen (need help)

Distroid

Newbie
I've done this before, but I've been out of the Android Dev loop for a while. Trying to get back into it.
I found the xda post about creating custom bootscreens that i had followed before.[HOW TO] Make your own bootscreen and create signed zip - xda-developers today I did the same thing and even followed the advice posted by phaelox in post #4 because i remember doing that before.

Stats: htc sprint hero, rooted, running fresh-hero-2.4.0

What i've done: followed tutorial on creating gifs, compiled into .zip using 7zip, signed apk using signapk, copied signed zip to root of SD, flashed zip using recovery-ra-heroc-v1.5.2.img (flash successful), rebooted

Symptoms: at boot shows the HTC logo, then blank screen for remainder of boot. small vibration towards the end, then Fresh ROM loads just fine. everything else works.

Other (hopefully) helpful facts: I've uploaded my signed zip so someone can take a look at it ( maybe try it out ), when i use ES File Explorer the 3 gifs and audio play just fine, so i'm thinking the issue might be the .xml file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ty :) -DistroiD

The black screen you're getting during boot means that the phone is not able to use the bootanimation you created. When you zip the bootanimation, you need to set the zip to "store" (no compression) rather than compressing it. That's the main mistake that is usually made with a bootanimation.

Once the bootanimation is properly created, it needs to go into /system/media.

I've been makng bootanimations for a while and I've never had to sign the file.

Here is some helpful info for bootanimation desc.txt:

512 256 30
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1

*** delete this line and everything below it before zipping ***
512 – stretched width of the animation
256 – stretched height of the animation
30 – this controlled the speed of both parts of the animation
p - part
1 – this defined how many times part0 of the animation looped
0 – saw no change when altering this number
part0 – folder containing first part of the animation
p – part
0 – this defined the number of times part1 of the animation looped (0=infinite)
0 – saw no change when altering this number
part1 – folder containing second part of the animation

Your bootanimation.zip file needs to be zipped as "store" - no compression.

Thank you! I'm not 100% but I think I did have it set for compression. What you're saying makes sense. I'll try it now :D

Also, keep in mind that the tutorial you linked to is almost a year old, lots of things have changed since then. I've never heard of a boot animation using .xml files. My boot animations include the following

Part0 (folder)
Part1 (another folder)
desc.txt (this file tells the system what to do with the other two parts.

And that's it. Zip it without compression and it works. I've attached a simple boot animation to this post so you can unzip it and see what's inside. I'm currently using this bootanimation on my Samsung Vibrant.

re-zipped the file without compression, signed, flashed, no change.

& the format you guys are talking about is completely different than what I'm using. It's also different than what comes in freshROMs & even stock. Dunno of that'll work. & it means a lil more work for me cuz I'll have to break the 3 gifs into individual picture files. So ill try that way tomorrow.

Try using my bootanimation as it is from the attachment and see if that works. There's no need to sign a bootanimation file, signing a file adds a folder and other files that interfere with the process. The bootanimation.zip that came with my phone wasn't signed either.

So I can flash the zip thru recovery without signing?

No, my bootanimation is not a flashable zip. simply copy it to your phone and use a file manager to place it in /system/media. I have never signed any of my bootanimations and they all work for me and other users.

OK, back again. never got this issue resolved.
I didn't mean sign the boot animation folder, I meant sign the update zip so I could flash the folder to my phone. but the folder & files are there, so that's not the problem anyways.
The problem seems to be the images themselves, something I'm doing wrong when exporting the gif frames into individual png's....

Any tips?
