Root Creating custom ROM help

PhoneMan93

Android Enthusiast
I have Ubuntu 11.04.
And Android SDK and Eclipse properly installed.
I've installed 2.2 and 2.3
But now what? But after spending all my study time searching for how to create a custom ROM I leave empty handed.
Do I need to install anything else to create a Custom ROM?
And how do I create one specifically for the Prevail?

I can help with theming. As for the other things..ill try to answer(not the most helpful though)

I think:
You need the sources specific to phone. kernel/android 2.x/drivers(?)
you need android sdk/jdk/eclipse
you have to compile the kernel yourself or use existing kernal.
thats all i know.
I would check xda or maybe more on here for more info...i would love to learn and help out aswell.

btw anyone if certain distros of linux are better to make custom roms. Op has ubuntu 11.04..11.10is latest of which i have but also have linux mint and backtrack

Ubuntu 11.10 was really buggy on my computer. :( Plus i don't like Unity. lol
And i have all that except for the kernel, so could i use something like kourmakernel?

what kind of ROM are you trying to make

are you trying to take an existing ROM and make MODS to it?

are you trying to compile a new ROM from source code?

If you are trying to compile a ROM from source

We dont have working source code from Samsung for the Froyo or GB rom

I dont think you will have much luck getting an AOSP ROM to work with all the Samsung security stuff

You can compile a working CyanogenMod ROM if you want

Just look for the guides that instruct you how to build an Android Dev environment and how to make a CyanogenMod build system

You can use my source code
https://github.com/hroark13/SPHM820-CM

I think that was part of my problem. I had to update my sdk for Ubuntu 11.04. I'm going to try to get my modded rom out sometime this week if all goes well. I'm still learning all this as I go, so I haven't had much luck yet. But hroark, shabby, interdepth, kouma, just wanted to show some thanks for all that you guys have done in such a short time.

I encourage all of you guys / gals to try and develope new ROMS

It is fun to do, you will learn a lot, and the more developers we have the more cool stuff we will get for the Prevail and other phones.

It is not about competing or who's ROM is better, we are all working together, and we all borrow some of the stuff other people have put out from time to time.

If you are going to compile from source, I would advise using Github

This way others can look at your code and help you with it, or use some it for their projects.

Hroark could you repost your github link please.. doing maintaince on my nix_box
but i wana check it out when im done.. thankz..

edit: nevermind i found it..sorry ..

just a hint if it gets buggy just log out and switch it to a 2D desktop instead of 3D
your computer mite have conflicts with the 3D..

You can't change it on 11.10 can you? Well it doesn't matter because its purely Unity! lol but thanks hrorak

I made my account, made my repo, and forked your Sphm820-cm, now what?

Hmm would the 3D be effecting my computer by not allowing it to shutdown, but turning everything else off?
I mean Unity works fine on 11.04 for me its just on 11.10 its screwed up.

actually yeah.. iv seen it freeze the whole computer and black out the screen where you cant get to your logout shutdown options.. if your downloading sometimes it can be a pain also by locking everything up.. then when its switched to 2D it acts like nothing was ever
wrong with it...

Funny how things work? lol

When I do the 51-android.rules do I change the Nexus S and Nexus One to Prevail?

# adb protocol on passion (Nexus One)
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", ATTR{idProduct}=="4e12", MODE="0600", OWNER="<Adrian>"
# fastboot protocol on passion (Nexus One)
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTR{idProduct}=="0fff", MODE="0600", OWNER="<Adrian>"
# adb protocol on crespo/crespo4g (Nexus S)
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", ATTR{idProduct}=="4e22", MODE="0600", OWNER="<Adrian>"
# fastboot protocol on crespo/crespo4g (Nexus S)
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", ATTR{idProduct}=="4e20", MODE="0600", OWNER="<Adrian>"

You see what I mean?

And this isn't working for me:

$ sudo apt-get install git-core gnupg flex bison gperf build-essential \
zip curl zlib1g-dev libc6-dev lib32ncurses5-dev ia32-libs \
x11proto-core-dev libx11-dev lib32readline5-dev lib32z-dev \
libgl1-mesa-dev g++-multilib mingw32 tofrodos python-markdown \
libxml2-utils

I am supposed to enter that into Terminal right?
It may be because it says this is invalid:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner"
But it is copied off the site

Thanks for being so helpful!
And I hooked my phone up to Ubuntu last night and now it wont shutdown...
Does it give you a line about initilised modem when you try to shut down?
I got tired of that, ubuntu could have been a windows replacement but I think they went way far out in left field with unity I went to linux mint debian edition myself all the stuff I knew from ubuntu is still applicable and it seems quicker.
