Help Current state of the stock Triumph

I just purchased a Triumph via the $120 special. In one of the other forums some people did not have much good to say about the phone ...but many were not users of the phone.

So what do the users of the phone have to say about it. Have I made a good choice? Are there still issues with the phone, what are they and are there work around's? What about rooting the phone. What will this do for me and is it reversible?

Thanks

Hey there,
Welcome to the Triumph section! I moved your post into its own thread.

I think you know my feelings on the phone already, but glad to see you posted here for more input. I wish mine only cost $120! I think the phone is a great buy for that price.

This phone is pretty much completely unlocked and it is very easy to make changes to it (anx reverse them). I will point out the Motorola Triumph Root Guide in the all things root section here, it has a lot of info about rooting and all of that.

Different people report different problems (or none at all), so you will have to see what happens when you get yours. Virgin Mobile has a great return/replacement policy if you are not happy.

I hope others pop by and give you some input as well.

I think you made a good choice. And rooting is reversible. I like my phone granted it does have occasional issues but doesn't everything, take the iphone for example... Go onto a help site or something and there will be tons of people asking what to do and why isn't it working. Also a lot of reviews are just bad and biased like the phonedog review I think I'll change if its not, but basically the girl who is reviewing the phone is dissing it and saying stuff about rumors as issues and its not as good as higher end phones on companies that you pay $100+ a month for... Really?. :( But the triumph just coming into the smartphone world or upgrading its an amazing phone. You also have to realize its a $300 phone when a lot of other phones go for $600+ without a contract.

I'm in the same boat, waiting for my MT to be delivered. The only thing that concerns me are the hardware problems (such as GPS, weaker signal compared to OV, button issues, screen issues). Everything else can be fixed in software (via CM7/9). So is it true that all MTs have weaker signals than OV's in the same spots? Thus higher battery drains and dropping calls sooner?

I have noticed a little bit of a weaker signal, but not much. Higher battery drain isn't really all that bad especially since it has a huge screen, faster processor, and a small battery... If your worried about battery life you could always get an extended life battery or just get an extra battery. I have not experienced any calls dropping. The other issues like the screen and button issues are not really there very rarely ill unlock it and the screen will be washed out or flickering but a quick lock and unlock fixes it. I think the main thing that they should've done different is put physical keys instead of capacitive keys, but that's about it.

I just bought mine yesterday too. I'm totally pumped, got a question though. So by unlocked does it have an unlocked bootloader? What about motoblur?

I'm waiting for my new phone to arrive too.

I was looking forward to using the HDMI output, but that's not fully supported in CM yet. I'm wondering if I just root the phone without putting CM on it, will I be able to add CM-like tweaks and fixes and overclock? Or do I really need to put CM on and lose HDMI to get the most out of the phone?

I don't need 3G or GPS, just good wifi support for browsing, media playback and games. I'd also like to remove the bloat, improve battery life, have a fast interface (Launcher Pro or ADW.Launcher?) and overclocking options would be nice.

No motoblur, sorry if you were hoping for that.

I agree with most of what marc said above. I have dropped like 2 or 3 calls since I bought mine (just after they came out). There is less coverage than say Verizon (who I had before), but in comparison to my wife's phone (the OV) it gets similar signal/coverage. Don't let the number of bars fool you, look at the exact signal (settings>about phone>signal). It was slightly worse, but not by very much and was sometimes better.

Wifi is excellent in my experience. HDMI is being worked on in CM7, so be a little patient, it works fine on stock. You can remove bloat just being rooted. Overclock is available for all the ROMs I believe (just be careful and know what you are messing with before doing it!). All the standard launchers work fine.

Thanks again for all the great info. I'm afraid the Triumph might put my old laptop to shame (it chokes on 720P Youtube).

(BTW, nice Xmas Dalek.)

same here got mine for $127 yesterday....downside is if its a POS i cant return it and exchange for a NEW one like at say bestbuy.

Thanks! It's amazing how many Dr. Who fans you meet nowadays!

@exploring - When I said unlocked, I meant unlocked bootloader, and (In comparison) it is very easy to root/hack/whatever. It is very hard to brick this phone to a state that you can't be walked through fixing it. In fact, I haven't seen anyone claim it and then not get it fixed. Hardware is a different issue, and if only they had a better QC from the start this thing would have rave reviews.

Like I mentioned elsewhere, if you do happen to get one with some hardware issues (hopefully they have fixed most of this) you can always return it for refurb within a year for free (at least I think it is free, that needs verified as I haven't returned one).

Within 30 days you can get a full refund as well. I hope you don't have such issues that you want to do that, but it's there if you need it.

That's awesome, no blur, unlocked. I'm coming from Sprint with an EVO. Seems like after I root my experience with the MT should be comparable to my EVO. How come you don't see the MT listed as a device on cyangenmod's website if your able to install CM7?

It's not officially supported. So not on the list. There are many other phones in the same situation.

Yea almost any phone can install cm7... maybe not the official version just a port like the one Tickerguy made for us. Although Isaac said that he was working on something I can't remember what right this second, but basically we'll have a higher chance to be officially supported by cyanogenmod. Which would mean roms faster and nightlies!

I have the Triumph. YOU MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE! I'd want to hear that too honestly if I bought something like this (maybe we all do). If you are ALSO to new Virgin Mobile then welcome to VM!!!

I did have defective Triumphs as many users have reported for the past 4 months. Luckily the manufacture warranty gets me replacement phones (as is anyone else of course, and through VM). I have 2 replacement phones already. The 3rd.. honestly is working great. Those previous replacements had the problems of screen flickr (and white screen), and a MIC that just didn't work. Yup calling someone and they couldn't hear me straight out of the package from the mail!

I don't know if it's just mine, but I find the GPS lock to be faster when I use MAPS to get directions, then I press on the "navigate" button. It works good for me every time and sometimes it's instant.. even after not using it for awhile.

All in all I say don't listen to everything those complaining people talk about or make it seem like it's the worst phone ever (even though they have very true points most of the time with the issues!).. what's more important is that you listen at least 15% and I believe IMHO it's more about of how YOU feel the phone "works" for you. and enjoy your triumph.

Hey Guys,

I hope it is okay to ask this in this thread since someone else seems to plan on doing this as well. I too have a Triumph arriving this week. I don't plan to use the phone service, just wifi. I've read that in order to root, you need to activate the phone first. Is that really the case? I'd love to be able to tweak things but don't want to activate the phone.

No you do not need to activate it before rooting/ installing roms only if you wanna activate you have to do it before installing any roms since you can't do it in the roms.

One more quick question. If I do root the phone w/out activation, will that prevent me from activating the phone at some point in the future or will I be able to restore it if a backup is made?

You will just have to go back to stock so if you make a nandroid of your stock rom then yes you can activate it later on.

it depends.
and yeah you can always call vm and let them activate it!

If you are just rooting, and are still on a stock ROM you can activate. Just can't activate on a 2.3 ROM.
