Root Custom Recovery fail

so i have the custom recovery by joneidy and i am trying to recover my old rom by nandroid and it says : Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb and im wondering what is wrong with it and i cant restore anything at all please help

would i still be able to use the same backups to restore? cause i really need it. also i read somewhere that Cwm would brick my phone idk if thats true but thats what i heard

Not sure about restoring backups from joneidy with cwm, but I do know it works. PG has the recovery image on his cm7 link and you can use Flash Image GUI off of the market. Much easier than typing the commands.

I haven't used it myself but you could try appextractor from the market. It if soused to allow you to extract apps, SMS, contacts individually. Not sure if it will read joneidy's but it's worth a try.

Was your Nandroid backup directory renamed with special characters (spaces, ampersands, etc. (i.e., anything other than regular numbers, letters, dashes, and underscores)?

I've seen this error message before due to the above circumstance. If that's the case, just rename your Nandroid backup back to something "normal" (letters, numbers, underscores, or dashes) and you should be able able to restore it.

Hope that helps.

Cheers!

edit / p.s.: I've got some other ideas, too, if this doesn't turn out to be the issue.

Happens to me every day lol xD. I usually just charge my phone for a good hour then try it again. Every time Im liw on battery it gives me that issue. Idk if that's a solution. More of an idea to go and try kind of thing xD

Yeah, I wasn't sure when I first posted above that this was an RA (Amon_RA) custom recovery. I've looked in great detail at Amon_RA's custom recovery for the HTC Droid Eris (I've recompiled it to make it support menu navigation without using the trackball) as well as the nandroid-mobile.sh script, so, I'm guessing that the version for your phone isn't too much different.

There are a whole slew of non-zero return codes that can cause the aforementioned error message listed in the OP, most of which can be attributed by either the Nandroid backup directory being renamed to something than the shell that's invoked for the backup/restore can't handle (because the parameters passed to the shell get interpreted and a space and/or other special characters are special to the sh shell), or the phone is low on battery (30% is the threshold, I believe), or there's not enough space on the SD card (if you are doing a backup).

Cheers!

If your on gb and try to restore a band backup of froyo it will fail... in my opinion any way. Try to flash the rom that the backup is from first boot into it once then go into recovery and clear everything then restore from your backup. That's what I have found to work. Hope this helps!

I've done backups back and forth from the froyo stock to every rom for this phone. I've never had a problem with that. As for wiping it doesn't make much unless your installing a new rom. But I'm pretty sure it would help if you go from 2.3.5 to 2.2.1, I usually don't wipe until I see too many probs with the nand backup being too slow or many force closes.

yeah actually, almost all recoverys have a minimum battery percentage tow ork.. that way your phone doesnt die int he middle and leave you trying to unbrick it. another way to get past that error message is to simply plug your phone in and then do a restore. also switching to GNMs recovery will make this less of an issue. when i was using joneidys recovery i came across this error frequently, however pluging int he phone and using adb to restore always worked. GNMs recovery wont let you do a restore unless you ahve 30% or more battery OR the phone is plugged in if less than that. Joneidys i dont believe detects if the phone is plugged into power, and therefor, you have to do it via adb or wait till the phone is charged. i have personally only used CWM on this phone for a very brief time, just long enough to get the process of restoring certain items after a flash.. i do love CWM, just not for this phone.
