Root Custom ROM Themes Noob Question

So my Droid X is rooted now, everything has been backed up with nandroid, and now I'm looking to install a rom.

I tried last night, but when I installed one, nothing happened, it showed me the stock theme of my DroidX.

Where do I go to see the theme/roms before I actually install one and start working with it? I don't want to do it blind. Thanks!

you need droid x bootstrapper, it is your best friend and you have to pay to get it, well worth the $2 because it is your lifeline to installing new things.
then you download the rom of choice that goes with your version number such as 2.3.340
apex 1.4.1 will work as will liberty 2.0.1 Darkslide, rubix, fission(donate to get it)
and gummyjar and probably several others, you download them and move them to the root of your sdcard
open droid x bootstrapper
hit bootstrap recovery
allow superuser permission
hit ok for success
hit reboot recovery
wait for the clockwork mod screen (green)
by using your volume up and down buttons and camera button to select
scroll down to factory reset/data wipe and wipe data
then scroll down to wipe cache partition. and wipe it
and go to install zip from sd card 5th one down i believe by using your volume up and down buttons and camera button to select
then choose location on sdcard (2nd one down)
locate your rom
install
once its done
hit your back button
and reboot phone option
and usually the first boot takes a while, so be patient, if you have any issues post back and you will hear from me or one of the other forum members to assist you :)

Hi,

There is a complete guide on how to install themes and roms here. U D G . I think it's very good and comprehensive. Take a look at it. If something doesn't make sense, please feel free to ask more questions.

Steven

Edit: I see VS gave a detailed answer on what may be your issue. I would look at www.roooler.com anyway just to get yourself acquainted with more on the topic. :)

steven you should be proud, im always on the lookout for noobies so that i can help them, and possibly turn them into someone like me who doesnt know everything but knows enough to help :)

I've tried to do that step for step, and went as far as installing a rom and then nothing happened. So I restored with Nandroid and it was fine.

Largely, my question is: How do I remove the center button in the app? I have launcher pro and I'm trying to set up a custom dock.

Any ideas?

The center button with all the little boxes, I click that and it takes me to the full list of APPS I have. Is there a way to remove that just so I have four buttons on the bottom?

long press the launcher icon, and then you can move it and add something else there.

i dont know about launcher pro but adw only allows 1, 3, 5 slots on the main dock

I am proud of you! Actually, I think we have the best section of the forum because of people like you, me and others who actually trip over each other to help newbies. :)

haha, but you know one thing i do notice about this forum section, is that when we someone helping a newbie, we dont steal em, we let them continue to help, but when we leave out some information we include it, such as metfanant when he reminded me of maderstcok and he only posted once in that part, thats what i think is amazing that we have members who will watch to make sure the right information is given, and when its not we will remind each other of the proper way :)

Uploaded new launcher and edited the stuff, so far I have it working to where I want it to be. Thanks for the help gang!

So which rom And theme did you end up flashing? I'm new like you (not to phandroid but to the dx) and I flashed free s apex 1.4 with honeybread theme.

One thing tho, I used rom manager to make a back up before flashing those, but when I went into my nandroid sub folder, I saw no files. I hope I made a back up. Bc I wanted to try Libertys rom too...and also be able to accept the new gingerbread when it finally decides to release officially.

To be honest, I ended up flashing back to stock, buying adw, and just messing around with their general themes, until I went in and downloaded the black glass theme, simi clock and cal widget, now everything is falling into place as to how I actually wanted.

Ohh ok.. Well if your up for it. Fab just released the new APex 2.0( one of the top roms on this board). It now running off of the new gingerbread OS. And steven58 has told me that the GB leak is smooth as butter... iphone butter. You should dive a lil deeper in the root community and taste the Ginger! I will be asap once im off work.

Yea, I've already tried to update a rom once, and it failed, so I had to flash back to stock.

I have to read into it further because I have zero clue what to do or even where to start lol.

I feel you on that one. It is confusing at first. But here the stickied thread that makes it easy to learn and comprehend what the hell is going on lol.

JUST CLICK ME BUDDY! But one small advice. They give you multiple ways of going about flashing, rooting, themeing etc... choose one way and get a full understanding. I tried to read bits from each and got confused at first. How i did it was in this order:
1. terminology: Get to know what words mean what. So you can follow discussion
2. Download needed apps/files
3. root
4. rom
5. theme

ANd its pretty much that simple. troubleshooting is pretty easy too b/c there hundreds up here that can help.

Oh yea.. and when you get good info. CLick the thanks tab! Its nice to get a pat on the back. lol

That's what I mean about tripping over each other to help out. FWIW, some procedures have two or three different ways to get to the same point, so there really isn't a correct way to do stuff for some actions. :)

unless your me then everything you say is the right way :p

btw
bsems rom manager is best to use to make a backup because you can name it instead of date and time, thats why i use it

Yea thats what ive used since my D1 days.. but what i just realized is that i did not make a backup after my initial root and before my apex 1.4 flash. For some reason... sometimes when I make a backup via rom manager. it doesnt perform the action. I have to do click the command twice. THe first time it will pop up with the option to change the file name. Then i would press ok and it will do nothing. I think thats what happened to me...smh. So im kinda stuck with apex 1.4 as my only rooted nandroid file.

or you could do what i do, make a back up in clockwork mod, then open rom manager and rename them... its what i do ^_^
