Root Custom Rom?

Hey all, I have just recently updated my phone to froyo using the RUU and I was considering flashing a custom rom on the phone after a few weeks of testing out froyo. In the event that I do choose to go custom rom, is there any that you would recommend particularly. My only requirements are:

- I don't really want to root the phone
- I have had previous experience with flash custom roms with my old Samsung i7500 so I can handle technicalitys and so on

Any ideas would be really helpful!!
:)

You can flash another ROM in recovery without a rooted ROM, but removing root doesn't really achieve anything.

Can you? I suppose that is under the assumption that you still have custom recovery i.e. the phone has previously been rooted?

Yes, stock recovery will only install HTC-signed updates. Custom recovery is a basic rooted OS, it doesn't use the main ROM.

Hmm...
The reason I ask this is because when I was using my Samsung Galaxy i7500. I was able to install custom roms on to the phone using a custom recovery which I flashed using abd. Is that not possible in this instance?

You install roms via recovery but they're all rooted. I'm not sure anybody will understand why you don't want root unless you explain.

I just don't want to root because I feel that the possibility of something going wrong would increase dramatically with a malicious app for instance.

Thats true. Apps run sandboxed in android. Nothing can gain root access unless you specifically allow it.

Well teppic74 has a stock rooted Froyo on this root forum that may be worth checking out.

If you like close to stock, but improved upon (stability, speed) I recommend googling "Modaco R8"

If you want something really fast and stable, but as far from stock as possible, Google "Defrost". It has no HTC stuff on it at all.

Yeah I'd second teppic74's ROM if you want as stock as you can get. There's also OpenDesire but lately it's been less stable than anything and constantly updated every 2 days with more bugs than fixes so I'd steer clear of it or read up alot about it.

+1 for Teppic's ROM.

Rooted and installed it last night and been abusing it all day with no problems. Seems a little faster and slicker than the stock rom. Did a Quadrant benchmark test and is a slight increase on my Stock 2.2 ROM.

Have now installed the power mod pack and ap2sd+ so will see how i get on with those :D

Out of interest, what was the score for both?

My score going from a stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 (both rooted) on Quadrant was ~500 vs ~1380, stupidly huge difference. When I had OpenDesire it was almost hitting ~1500.
