cwm recovery questions

Lurker
As a noob to flashing roms etc. I would appreciate some advice and to know if this is straightforward or risky:confused:

I'd like to use clockwork recovery on my rooted stock gs2 and I have downloaded what I think is the correct file for my phone "recovery-clockwork-4-2.0.1.5-galaxys2.zip" from the CWM/ Rom Manager website.

Questions:
Is this the correct file?
Will it alter my kernel?
Will my root be lost?
Should I flash it with Mobile Odin app or Heimdall?

Welcome to Android Forums! :)

It's inadvisable to use the 'official' ClockworkMod Recovery with Samsung-based firmwares on the GT-i9100 due to certain incompatibilities. There are however GS2-friendly versions, recompiled from the original source code, available. Go to this thread and download the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip file.

This is an insecure (rooted) version of your current kernel, so you'll still have root access but now with added CWM goodness. You'll see the CWM app in your app drawer after installation, which serves a similar function to ROM Manager (but without the aforementioned drawbacks). If memory serves me correctly, it can be installed with Mobile Odin by first extracting the TAR file from the ZIP, copying it to your SD card and flashing that.

Thanks very much for the advice and welcome, Slug.

I've downloaded the file and am ready to go.

Just a couple more things, if you wouldn't mind ...

Am I right in thinking that I do not have to "Wipe data and cache" or "Wipe Dalvik cache" in Mobile Odin? Also, will there be any problem that I have su and busybox already installed?

Thanks in advance.
