Root CyanogenMod 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) on post e911 magic

I went into Spare Parts and made sure the End button behavior was set to "Go to sleep" and I also adjusted my Wi-Fi sleep policy to "When screen turns off" (Settings->Wireless & Data->Wi-Fi settings->menu->Advanced).

This seems to have helped, so you might give that a try too.

All this talk about wiping the battery stats it sounds like I might be screwing myself with the way I charge my phone.

I have a spare battery on the charger and when the one in the phone dies I just swap them. So I guess I must be screwing up my battery stats?

But that being said my standby time is 2+ days, it cuts down to like 1 day or less if I am using it for games or updating/installing apps, phone calls ect...

There are big chances yes since you go from mostly discharged/empty to full on another battery without any charge time in between. If you see too much of a drain even under normal usage try to wipe your stats between battery change.

The more cpu/gpu intensive use you do with the phone the more it drains. 2 days is quite in the normal range unless it's on the 2 battery cycle.

The 2+ Days is on one of the batteries, so I have no complaints about battery life. As for the 1 day or less when i am using it fairly heavily, I'll try a battery stat wipe to see if that helps between battery swaps.

2 batteries is a must for my second job, I need to be all over the building with immediate phone access at all times for 5-6 hours.

how do you enable the saving of apps on to the sd card? the option is grayed out for me in the settings menu..

Check for the following on the market "Titanium Backup", "App Manager" or "Linda Manager". They all have the options to backup apps on the sd.

the battery wipe worked..im on 90% battery life after 4 hours of light usage...thanks guys

I have another question is it possible to remove the dash between the numbers in contacts and/or when dialing a number?

Are you guys seeing a microphone button on the Android keyboard? I thought 2.1 had voice input everywhere but don't see it on my keyboard. I'm using CM 5.08test4.

That keyboard with the mic, is I believe a proprietary one. Because of that it can't be included included with CyanogenMod. Search around on the forurm at XDA-developers.com or at CyanogenMod.com for a copy of the HTC keyboard, I believe that there is a copy around that has the mic button

There is also the voice search/dial app with widget. Since I use a different keyboard I keep the voice widget on the home screen. That proprietary keyboard accesses the same voice app.

So I'm running the CM 5.0.8test4 for about a week now and am pretty happy with it. However I'd like to try some other ROMs now.
What are you guys running? How are other ROMs comparing to Cyanogen?
Also another question: would Nandroid restore my complete configuration? Or do I need to use Titan after that?

Testing other roms may mean changing radio just be aware of it before making your choice. I won't advocate any other rom in particular as they all have pros and cons. You should check on xda for a complete list of available roms.

I'm currently running Smoki 0.6.8 (6.35 radio rom) and i'm pretty happy about the speed. Never got a FC on it. Dev is also pro-active and working closely with other parteners.

Thanks, I'm aware of the potential radio issue. So far AFAIK Cyanogen and Smoki support radio that would let me to avoid being harassed by Rogers. Anything else?
Also could anybody please comment on my Nandroid question?

Yes nandroid restore your phone as it was when you made the backup (installed apps, widget, home screens configuration, etc). Its the same as doing a hard disk image on your pc. You just restore the image and presto... a working configured android :D

Just a tip for folks that have gone through this routine to get back to a rooted Magic, you don't have to do this again if you decide to switch radios. You can easily switch between old and new radio in a few minutes. Just pay close attention because radio switching is where bricks happen. :) The tricky part for rogers users has always been getting the 'right' version to keep data. Once you have copies of radios, hboot, and recovery for each, keep them safe for easy switching. I've been going back and forth hoping that new radio roms would be super stable but for now the old radio cyanogenmod and variants are still the best on our phones at least for my use. But I assume that the next official release will be for new radio so I have my routine ready to go.

What ROM have you settled with these days?

I really like CM 5.0.8 but find the battery isn't lasting very long at all even after taking similar measures to others on the CM forums. It seems like it will get hot for some reason and start churning through the battery. I reverted back to my nandroid backup of 5.0.8 test 4 to see if it is any better. I sure hope this will be improved once we get a new radio from the official Roger's release.

I came back to cyan 5.08 (by alan90). I've got it tuned for decent battery however there is a fixed kernel and a promised v2 this weekend. I tried a few new radio roms but they had other issues. Doing a full battery status wipe and charge/drain cycle improved things a lot. It also helped to remove some of the bundled apps I either didn't need or wanted to use the market versions.

Cool, I see here that v2 has been posted, gonna give it a try. Are you using the kernel in Step #2 of that thread or something else?

I'm still using the rom kernel. The addon is no faster but avoids using Setcupu which isn't a problem for me. If battery life gets bad I might try the other kernel again. This rom blows away the rogers rom in every way.

The whole process has been going fine, but on step 20:

"20. Run the Rogers RUU “RUU_Sapphire_Rogers_WWE_2.17.631.2_release_signed_NoDriver”.exe"

The RUU fails and says [140] BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR and I can't continue. The goldcard has worked fine in the past, so I don't think it's that.

e: I tried redownloading the RUU and it still failed with the same error.

Aha, I've solved the problem myself.

I had made a mistake in the previous step - when installing the hboot, I only did it half way. Rather than rebooting with home+back, I turned the phone off at that point.

So for all you googlers out there, if you get [140] BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR, go back and make sure you flashed the hboot properly!
